I had a great uncle that had a peanut farm in Sumter SC when I was growing up and I Loved digging them up lol This year I decided to try to grow some and I now have about a dozen plants in 7gallon grow bags. I’m excited to see what I get from them. This video was very helpful, thank you
I wrap the branches around inside the pot. I too learned that a pot is not enough room for the pegs. Your friends idea of burying the pot so the pegs can reach the soil is a great idea. I hung and dried mine, but I saw on one video, he washed them at harvesting and boiled them for an hr with some salt. Here in FL. there are many roadside vendors with propane burners and large commercial cooking pots boiling peanuts..some with just salt, others with extremely hot peppers and spices..if not to hot, I like the spicy. I have not roasted any, what I harvested I turned around and replanted. You never get all of them so where ever you plant one year expect to have sprouts come up the following the next growing season like you, I thought it was a fun experiment. thank you for sharing..
Thanks for the great tip Janet! I never thought of wrapping the braches in the pot, but that sounds like it should work. I gave mine a brine bath, then roasted them in the oven. We sure did like the way they came out.
I also might have an interesting anecdote on planting peanuts. I watched videos around to learn and sure enough, it IS the real experience that will teach one. I followed one vlog where you have to soak the skinned nuts in water until they begin to grrminate. It didn't, even after about a few weeks. Eventually, I discarded the water and threw the nuts somewhere, anywhere in the small garden I have. And, what do you know? It grew to a patch of green leaves now, and am waiting when to harvest. Coincidentally, I stuck, just so simply, some with skins, into the soil. Same thing happened. Very glad I did.
Thanks for sharing your experience with them. I'm sure others will learn something from it too. It seems to me that some people try to make things too complicated sometimes.

Before they begin growing, all you can see is red dirt. A LOT of red dirt. Thanks for showing everyone what this looks like up close. 👍👍👍

Nice! Last summer I noticed that one of the peanuts I used for feeding birds had germinated and transplanted it into a small pot to see what would happen. I was checking the little plant a few minutes ago and found there was a tiny peanut growing. My plans are to try planting more in much bigger pots, now and then taking them outside in late spring. (I live in Minnesota not enough warm days in the year.) Glad I ran into this video by luck!
@@MidwestGardener Thanks. I actually went out and got a bag of peanuts for the birds so I could start growing some indoors to then move them outside when our temp goes (way) up following your method. I plan to try it with sweet potatoes also. This is upper midwest as in northern Minnesota.
Just planted 6 peanuts into a growing tray. When they sprout imma plant them like I do potatoes I think. Because after seeing this video I have some ideas about how to maximize productivity. Thank you fir sharing your experience for All of Us to see and learn from.
Growing in pots is usually done to save room in the garden, if you bury the pot anyway there is no need for a pot. Peanuts don't need a deep pot but they do need a wide pot.
I planted peanuts during the initial stages of Corona. I chose it in an effort to provide healthy snacks for my family. My crops have flowered and have dropped pegs. However I would love some suggestions on how to care the plant at this stage. Thanks for sharing this video.
You're welcome, Debbie! I really didn't do much except for watering after the plant dropped pegs. I tried to loosen the soil before the plants produce pegs on the ones I grew in the ground. I've heard of people hilling peanut plants, but I've never tried that.
G`day 🎵 I am growing peanuts on my balcony and have roughly the same size pots, after some research i decided to pin down the flowering stems to the ground and it's now at the stage where i need to pin down another lot .... i was dubious about the results but after watching your vid i`m keen to see the how many peanuts can be harvested .... cheers to you for a cool vid 👍🎶

Wow how cool 😎 and I’m in Florida the land of the peanuts! I never knew when they say a LONG growing season it does NOT mean you plant once and then replant a second crop... it means you plant and then it takes a LONG time!! No wonder I see those GIGANTIC peanut fields!! But ... it surely DOES sound worth it to me by just how tickled you sound when you see that there IS a reward at the end... And you made a REALLY GOOD video... very informative, interesting, and you did it calmly without rushing and holding that camera steady. The only questions I have would be: I am assuming that you grew it in Full Sun, so is there much of a growth/yield difference between the various species, and what species did you plant? Thank you so much for a very informative and well-made video. 🌱🌱🌱
Thank you very much for the very kind and inspirational comment! Yes, I did grow it in full sun. The variety that I grew was Virginia Jumbo. This year I'm going to be growing Tennessee Red. I've only grown the Virginia Jumbo, so I won't be able to make a comparison till later this year. I'm looking forward to seeing how the Tennessee Reds do. Thanks again for the great comment!
Wow. I thought that peanuts came from trees. I never seen a peanut plant. I love peanuts but I always buy them. I have space in my raised bed I think that this would be great to plant. Thanks for this information. Now I know what to plant in that space. Great video.
You know like an idiot I figured I would try peanuts this year. I threw them in a pot with carrot seeds not thinking it would wind up being a cluster. Well they are both growing beautiful now. I really wish I turned to UA-cam first. Your video was great. Lessons learned for all today.
how did they taste? how frequent did you have to water it? and how did you plant the peanut?(in water first, or just stuck it in soil and watered?) do you have to plant the nut with the shell or do you think it would be faster to grow it with the shell off, or would it just rot? i would love to see more videos from you on this!
Hi Stephanie. They tasted great. We roasted them. I started them indoors. You should take the peanut out of the shell, but leave the skin on. I will be growing peanuts again this year, but I'm not sure how much detail I will show on them this year.
me if i was you i woundve got a pot the same size and put those extra root things in there so i don’t have to bury the pot then put the pots in a box to move them around awesome vid yo
Based on this, I would almost assume this thing could take over the yard. 1 peanut became 12....pretty awesome. 12 peanut plants would be 144 peanuts. Enough for a yearly snack :)
Thankyou for sharing this Jim, I am really fascinated by this, did you start if off with a normal bought peanut or do you need proper seed? 😆 Happily watching in North Warwickshire, England. Terry.
I bought the seed peanuts online. They came in the shell, so I ended up only using 4 individual peanuts. I'll try to get the video of our 3 we grew in the ground up tomorrow.
I want to do peanuts but we keep finding them everywhere out in the yard so I think either we actually have em growing somewhere or birds are dropping them off. It looks like if you want a lot you will have to plant maybe in those 20 gallon pots or do multiples. I want to make natural peanut butter :)
Natural peanut butter sounds good. That is weird about finding peanuts. Maybe you have a neighbor that feeds them to the squirrels. We planted some out in the garden too. Those plants got much bigger. I'll have a video on them soon.
Great look forward to it. I don't know I'll be digging deep in the dirt and then I find full peanuts then randomly they end up in my planters too lol there's lots of crows and haws out here along wit many other birds so who knows but they do drop sunflower seeds over here too.
I love peanuts. Also, this man has a relaxing voice.
Thank you.

@@MidwestGardener Thanks. I actually went out and got a bag of peanuts for the birds so I could start growing some indoors to then move them outside when our temp goes (way) up following your method. I plan to try it with sweet potatoes also. This is upper midwest as in northern Minnesota.
@@carmenortiz5294 Nice! We really enjoy growing sweet potatoes too. I can't wait for warmer weather.
Good job for a first time peanut grower.
Thanks Helena! I really enjoyed the experience.
Great stuff, i wanna try this now. Great job with the time lapses this year Jim, great video here.
Thanks, Tory. Much appreciated. It was one of those just for fun projects, but I learned a lot while growing them.
Just planted 6 peanuts into a growing tray. When they sprout imma plant them like I do potatoes I think. Because after seeing this video I have some ideas about how to maximize productivity. Thank you fir sharing your experience for All of Us to see and learn from.
You're welcome! I hope all of your ideas for productivity work out great for you! Maybe you can come back and share them with us :)
Growing in pots is usually done to save room in the garden, if you bury the pot anyway there is no need for a pot. Peanuts don't need a deep pot but they do need a wide pot.
All good points.
Super fun botany lesson for me! Who knew!! Thank you!!
You're welcome!
I am going to plant them around my mailbox this year. Pretty all summer and give us a snack in the fall
Nice! Sounds like an interesting plan.
I want to grow peanuts, then I watched a video, then I learned how to grow them, and today it is a healthy plant'
That's awesome! Thanks for taking the time to leave such a great comment! Very much appreciated!
Wow, really awesome and informative video! Can’t wait to try growing them!
Thank you very much! I think that you will really enjoy growing them.
Very interesting to see the whole process
Thanks! It was fascinating for me to experience too, since I had never grown one before.
Thank u for the video. My first grader asked me how does peanut grow. This video answered all her questions. We subscribed to your channel.
You're welcome! I'm glad that the video was able to answer the questions she had. Thank you very much for subscribing! I very much appreciate it.
G`day 🎵
I am growing peanuts on my balcony and have roughly the same size pots, after some research i decided to pin down the flowering stems to the ground and it's now at the stage where i need to pin down another lot .... i was dubious about the results but after watching your vid i`m keen to see the how many peanuts can be harvested .... cheers to you for a cool vid 👍🎶
Thanks a bunch! I hope you have a good harvest from yours. I found the while experience to be fascinating. Pinning them down sounds like a good plan. I hope it works well for you!
After such tender loving care and gentle curiosity, watching the peanut plant murder sent shivers down my spine
I guess that's one way to look at it :)
Watching while eating peanuts here
Lol. The perfect snake for watching this video :)
Thank you for your peanut video, I can’t wait to try to grow some this spring 😊 I’ve subscribed to get more gardening tips.
You're very welcome! And thanks for subscribing! I hope you enjoy growing peanuts as much as I did.
Wow looks just fantastic , timely video too , I have a volunteer growing currently in a small grow bag, I think I should put it into a bigger grow bag for better results .
Well, that was good timing then. Hope it turns out ok.
Just beautiful
I have couple growing indoors at the moment
Nice! I hope you enjoy growing them as much as we did.
@@MidwestGardener this is my first time growing here in the UK
But have lovely childhood memories of my dad growing them in Jamaica
I am excited
Thank you
Wow how cool 😎 and I’m in Florida the land of the peanuts!
Thanks for the video my man.
You're welcome, Gabriel!
THIS IS AMAZING!!!!
Thanks Nina! I'm glad you think so.
Pleased you have shared this Jim as I was curious to see how the plant produced, interesting to see!!
I'm glad that you found it interesting, Mick. It was very interesting to me too, since I really didn't know much about peanuts before I grew these.
Wow. I thought that peanuts came from trees. I never seen a peanut plant. I love peanuts but I always buy them. I have space in my raised bed I think that this would be great to plant. Thanks for this information. Now I know what to plant in that space. Great video.
Thanks. The seemed pretty easy to grow from what I could tell.
Melanie Willard Are spanish pranuts safe from mold?
That's cool! I love peanuts.
Thanks Heather! I love them too.
Why did I think peanuts grow on a tree🤔 this amazed me noiicceee
I'm glad that you found it to be interesting. it was fascinating for me too.
Well peanuts are called "Erdnüsse", which means earthnuts translated, here in Germany. Otherwise I would think so too, for sure lol
Thanks for that. That was really interesting. Inspired me to maybe give it a go next year.
Thanks again. Best wishes
Mike
Thanks, Mike. It was a fun and interesting thing to do. It does take a long time to reach harvest time though.
I have some planted in containers in my greenhouse. It is my first time planting them also. I have a long way to go. They are just flowering.
Yes, if they are just now flowering, it will be a while.
Very nice... next time boil the fresh peanuts with shells and add salt in the water ...best thing ever ❤️❤️thanks for sharing the video
Thanks for the tip. I really need to try that some time.
Nice harvest Jim... I should have a pot to try next year... T
I think you would enjoy them if you decide to give them a shot.
sir' thanks for inspiring us to plant more veges & fruits in our garden, i love it :)
You're very welcome!
:)
we boil fresh peanuts with shells upon harvesting it...just add a lil salt on the water n boil for 20-25mins...
Sounds good. I might have to try it.
20 min? I boil them for 10 hours with habeneros salt and old bay seasoning
Boiled peanuts are the best
Cleofelyn Al Ali we cook them overnight in crockpots in Georgia
Add some la. Crab boil seasoning" while boiling its delicious.
I'm going to give it a try. Thank you for sharing.
You're welcome! It's a fun project to do.
That project is a success, Jim.
Thanks. It's good to have one of those once in a while, with all the bug issues this year.
You know like an idiot I figured I would try peanuts this year. I threw them in a pot with carrot seeds not thinking it would wind up being a cluster. Well they are both growing beautiful now. I really wish I turned to UA-cam first. Your video was great. Lessons learned for all today.
Thanks William! Glad to hear they are growing well for you. Glad that you enjoyed the video!
how did they taste? how frequent did you have to water it? and how did you plant the peanut?(in water first, or just stuck it in soil and watered?) do you have to plant the nut with the shell or do you think it would be faster to grow it with the shell off, or would it just rot? i would love to see more videos from you on this!
Hi Stephanie. They tasted great. We roasted them. I started them indoors. You should take the peanut out of the shell, but leave the skin on. I will be growing peanuts again this year, but I'm not sure how much detail I will show on them this year.
Thank you so much . Greetings from Malaysia and god bless =)
You're very welcome! I've heard from quite a few people from Malaysia.
me if i was you i woundve got a pot the same size and put those extra root things in there so i don’t have to bury the pot then put the pots in a box to move them around awesome vid yo
Thanks for the suggestion Ryan! Maybe next time.
Why do i like watching this video plant life is awesome
I agree......plant life is pretty awesome.
Based on this, I would almost assume this thing could take over the yard.
1 peanut became 12....pretty awesome.
12 peanut plants would be 144 peanuts. Enough for a yearly snack :)
It is kind of fun to project that math over several years :)
My “flowers” have not bloomed can I picked them always
Very informative and a good video overall
Thank you very much, Joseph!
Midwest Gardener thankyou.
Robotic Allotment Gardener
I used peanuts in their shell from the supermarket. Worked great!
@@ChallengeTheNarrative you legend thanks that will save me waiting for them to come lol
This is so good, I watched entire video
I'm glad that you enjoyed the video! Thanks a bunch for watching!
@@MidwestGardener 👍
Wow what a wonderful plant.
Its amazing what nature can do :)
I agree. It absolutely is amazing!
Cotton plants are just as amazing 😃
How can cotton grow on a plant😃
Yep, I've grown cotton a couple of times and it's pretty interesting too.
How big is the pot you used in this video? Do you recommend a better size for peanuts in containers? Thanks for the video!
The pot I used was only about 3 or 4 gallons. I would say that the bigger the better, and a wider one would also be a good thing.
Wow, looks really healthy and lovely
Thanks!!
@@MidwestGardener you're welcome
That is kinda cool Jim! I'm considering it at some point now. Would be fun.
Brent
Yep, it was fun. I see some vertical peanut towers in your future.
That is so funny, but yeah, true.

Hello sir I m indian
Great video. Looks like you might need a wider pot. I will definitely try this, but I will use a very wide
Yes, a wider pot would work better.
Thanks for the video. Where did you get your peanut sets? OR can you grow them from seed peanuts?
I grew these from seed peanuts. I bought those from a seller on Amazon. They were Virginia Jumbo peanuts.
Awesome, we’re gonna try that. Thank you.
That's great! I hope you enjoy the experience as much as we did!
