I'm 60 years old, I have watched this movie every Christmas season of my entire adult life, and it still makes me weep every year. Merry Christmas everyone!
I've got the 60 year old guy beat. I'm 78 and still enjoy watching this movie year after year. BTW, the kid without the key that opens the gym floor at the dance played the Little Rascal Alfalfa.
The guy whose tree George crashed into was Sourpuss from, "Meet John Doe". The judge at the dance contest was the mayor in, "Meet John Doe" and, Annie, the maid, was the voice of Mammy Twostockings in the Tom & Jerry cartoons.
Verdy, your choice of editing, being in black and white like the movie was genius!! The hero throughout the movie is George, for sacrificing his hopes and dreams for others. The unsung hero throughout the movie is Mary, rounding the town together because she knew her husband was in trouble and loved him so deeply to reach out to everyone. Pure Gold 🪙 of a reaction. I have seen many reactions to this movie, you were brilliant. Merry Christmas to you and your family and nothing but love. David (Virginia) USA
FUN FACT: When drunk Uncle Billy walks off screen, the crash was NOT planned. A member of the stage crew dropped a tray of props, and the actor went with it. The movie was nominated for an Oscar for sound, and the guy on the crew was given a $10 bonus for "enhancing the sound".
You're very unlikely to see this comment now, but I need to share my feeling that you rose to the occasion with a sensitive, heartfelt reaction, just by being yourself. I hope you have lots of people as caring as George Bailey in your life, Verdy... you deserve it. I wish you well with your channel but, more importantly, I hope the New Year brings you happiness, love and good health.
I have watched this movie about every year around Christmas time which is when it mostly comes out. One of the best movies I've ever seen. Just a very moving emotional movie. A true classic.
Absolutely wonderful awesome reaction - Thank you for all you do - Have a wonderful awesome Holiday season and a very Happy New Year - Appreciate all your do with your reactions
This movie came out about a year after World War 2 ended. An event that took the lives of over 100 million worldwide. The World was hurting. It needed a reminder about love. About humanity. About kindness to one another. This movie hit that target quite nicely. Merry Christmas!
I’m in my 60’s, been watching this movie every Christmas season since I can remember. It always leaves a lump in my throat at the end. But watching your sweet face and reaction got me this time! Thanks for this reaction! Happy New Year! 😁
VERDY you when this movie first came out it Bombed in the Box office. Now it's a Holiday Classic. Great job with your edition making your reaction in Black & White just like It's A Wonderful Life.
Yes, and so they were not paying attention when they needed to file the paperwork to extend the copyright. So local tv stations were able to show this again and again without having to pay for it and so as more and more people watched it, it gained the reputation it has now. (I understand that they have since copyrighted the music, which in effect copyrights the movie again.)
Wonderful reaction. Such a timeless and powerful message with this movie. My favorite scene in this movie is the phone scene. George tried to hide his feelings for Mary, but once he got that close, he was done for.. in the best way possible. Mary was the true hero IMO.
While I love your reactions. You should really make multiple channels. I have listened to multiple music reactions. But didn't know you made movie reactions. My UA-cam only showed your music. The couple I have now watched. I love your movie reactions even more. You are so authentic. Your smile with and without braces is amazing. It brings a smile to me and I imagine thousands of other people. Great job! Good luck in your future endeavors.
What a soft and tender reaction. I have been watching this movie and "A Charlie Brown Christmas" every year since 1965. I still make sure I have a full box of facial tissues ready. Never lose touch with your moral compass and your heart. I'm a little late to wish you a Merry Christmas, so how about in advance for next year? Happy New Year!!
Beautifully done, Verdy. I grew up watching James Stewart and black and white films. I cried the first time I saw this over 50 years ago. I still cry when I watch this during the Holidays. I’ve had some dark moments in my life where I wished I could go back to correct my past mistakes. But now I know if I did, I would only make new mistakes. When I see my little boy’s eyes I stop regretting. I am exactly where I am supposed to be. Merry Christmas, Verdy.
Loved your reaction, so much I subscribed. You're so smart and observant. I loved how you were figuring things out before and as it was happening. Can't wait for your next reaction. Thank you, enjoyed watching.
This is one of those must watch movies every Christmas. It's a wonderful story with a good message. Great reaction Lady V, it was very cool how you recorded it in black and white during the movie. I love your reaction your expressions and comments are so honest. A wonderful reaction by a wonderful and beautiful young lady.
Thanks for sharing your reaction to this wonderful movie with us, Verdy. Great reactions as always. I also tear up every time I watch it. Nice touch you being in black and white along with the movie. Merry Christmas, Verdy and everyone.
A little trivia: The evil Mr. Potter was played by Lionel Barrymore. Great Uncle to actress Drew Barrymore, and from the famed acting Barrymore's from way back when..His brother was John (an even bigger name then) , and sister Ethel..Drew played the little girl in ET, and "Firestarter", and went on to star, and direct, in many movies since.
I like that your image is in black and white like the movie. Your eyes are very expressive. This was a nice reaction to one of my favorite (probably my favorite) holiday movies. Thank you for sharing.
I remember watching this on TV when I was a kid, and I remembered loving it the moment I saw it. Ironically enough, I rarely ever cry during movies, but this one has made me cry a few times recently. When I was younger, I didn't even cry once during this film. I just shrugged after seeing it the first time, and I admitted it was a touching movie with a great story to myself. But as I get older and understand life a bit more, I feel more emotional about it to the point that when I saw it again recently, I cried. It's one of those rare movies that gets better with age, and I just find it baffling how this film never got to me emotionally when I was younger. But as I get older, it hits me harder in the feels every time. Probably because I know what it's like to put one's own dreams aside to help others that are close to you, so I can definitely relate to George Bailey.
I loved this reaction and the way you filmed yourself in B&W. This a masterpiece of a movie from the American film icon Frank Capra. I am 71 and a film fanatic but I had never seen this movie until a few years ago and now I watch it every Christmas. It makes you realize what's really important in life. I don't think I've ever seen anyone who didn't cry the first time they saw this film!
I’ve seen this movie many times in my 72years, it still make me cry! Stewart was so great in this piece! “Phenomena” was also a feel good movie, it has love and good friends, good movie making!
I love your reaction you were quite and just talking it all in. Most people talk too much. You didn't miss a thing. Thanks it was like we watched it together.
Best Christmas movie ever! Thanks! My wife and I watch this movie every Christmas Eve to remember what is important. Your family and loved ones are always the most important thing. I love your perspective on this. Merry Christmas!
Remember George Bailey is a fictional character… I wonder how many people you have touched and brightened their day with your reactions to beautiful movies like this one 🙏❤️🙏 warmed my heart… merry Christmas
On more than one occasion - Mr Stewart has said this was his favourite movie. So too said Frank Capra. Billy Joel wrote "Don't forget your second wind" - based upon this movie - his favourite. To me, it is not surprising that so many people (myself included) adore this movie because of it's values. Surprisingly for the US - money comes second to friendship. Sadly - these are now "old fashioned values". Eccentricity used to be valued - in the UK it still is. Checkout "HARVEY" - another fine performance by Mr Stewart. I was fortunate enough to see the play of Harvey with Mr Stewart in the lead as Elwood P. Dowd on the London stage - in my youth. It is a great pleasure for me (aged 70) to see the young Ms Verdy appreciate and enjoy these values. Equally - to watch her admire Ronaldhino (forgive me if I misspell). Soccer seems to keep producing "artists of the ball". Sadly Hollywood has become Pottersville. Wadda-ya-gonna-do?
See the thing is...obviously, like everyone else, you'll rewatch this over and over every holiday season, and...when folks ask what you're favorite holiday movie is you're always thinking "You mean besides It's a Wonderful Life?" lol glad you enjoyed it. And BTW...the gym with the pool underneath?...that's the famous Swim Gym at Beverly Hills High School. It opened the year they made the movie and I used it every week when I attended BHHS in the 80's. It's still there and still in use. Happy Holidays!
Another absolute MUST SEE Classic Movie by the same director (Frank Capra) Is "Pocketful Of Miracles" (1961) A Truly Iconic Uplifting Feel Good Classic..TRUST ME. ❤
This is my first reaction of yours, and it’s a great one. Thanks for not cutting it too short, the way most others do. I look forward to watching more of your work.
Lionel Barrymore who played Old man Potter is the great uncle to actress Drew Barrymore. He is her Great Grandfather's brother. The man who played Nick the Bartender is Sheldon Leonard who later went on to produce the Di 7:28 ck Van Dyke Show in the 1960's. Merry Christmas to you and your family!
Bert the cop and Ernie the cab driver would be used to inspire the names a couple of Sesame Street puppets. Also the actor who played Bert the cop (Ward Bond)was a friend to John Wayne and would go on to play in many of his movies. Ward is a distant relative of mine.
I love seeing the people react to the end of this classic and see how George finds his life is not so bad and what an impact you made on so many people I myself am beginning to understand this in my own life so I can relate to this movie better now
I have watched a lot of reactions to this movie and yours is the best. It was real and seeing how the message of this movie affected you warmed my heard. We need more people like you in this world. Thank you.
I liked this reaction, I thought this girl was a bit harsh at first... but she got emotional, not when everyone was giving money, but when George was reunited with his children and Mary reached the top of the stairs. You don't see that often. That's my girl. Merry Christmas guys and to everyone who comes here.
23:05 The reason George is rejecting Mary is not to play "hard to get", but because getting married means giving up his dream of travel. In those days there was no reliable birth control, no child care, and women didn't work. If George gets married children will come soon, and he will have to have a steady job for the next 20 years to support them. He will be stuck in Bedford Falls for life. 25:33 George's outburst is him giving up his last hope of achieving his lifelong goal, surrendering to his love for Mary.
This movie makes me bawl every year. It got so I stopped watching it on account of it. (I have it on DVD). You're made of stronger stuff! Frank Capra was a great movie maker. You should watch some of his other pictures. The storylines usually follow the same idea of the hero having problems but eventually overcoming them. He also did a lot of spots for support of the troops during WW2.❤
I watched this movie every year since the 70s, i was impressed on how quick you caught things in the movie, some things took me years to get it,lol by the way, it was so beautiful to see you vulnerable, one final note, Mr Potter is Drew barrymore’s Grandfather or great grandfather, look her up of you don’t know her, shes a great actress, thank you for sharing, tes belles qaunds tu pleures, A la prochaine🙂👍🌹
Another aspect of this movie is how it affected those who were not on the front lines in WW II, but support soldiers (who were actually the majority of those who served... maintaining the supply lines, shipping etc), and those who did not serve (like George), but kept life going from 1941-1945 in America. Many of these "non-heroes" suffered from a belief that they had missed out on being a hero, seeing the World away from their homes, in what was the biggest event of their lifetimes and felt worthless and depressed because of it. George's plight showed people the value of just being a decent person who did what they could for their communities and families, showing how important one life could be to all those around him. It gave hope that they could too have "A Wonderful Life"... A great film that shows the frustrations of soldiers who were not in the "Action" of the war is "Mister Roberts" 1955 (Color) - Starring Henry Fonda, Jack Lemmon and Jimmy Cagney, based on a stage play. Thanks for a great reaction!
I'm sure you know by now that Frank Capra directed a few other notables, some of which are probably familiar to you (It Happened One Night, Meet John Doe, Mr. Smith Goes To Washington). Thank you for the wonderful Christmas memory, for allowing me to share your first reaction to an old favorite of mine from childhood. 💛🎄
Such a great reaction to one of the best movies, not just Christmas movies, of all time in my mind. Even as a bitter and heartless old man (or so I hear) I tear up every time I watch this movie. Jimmy Stewart, who played George Bailey, was pretty much fresh out of serving as the pilot of a B-24 bomber in WWII when this movie started production. After flying so many bombing missions over Germany in the course of his service and seeing all the death and destruction of a world war, he was suffering from what we'd now call PTSD. Lionel Barrymore (the hated Mr. Potter) was the main one who got Jimmy Stewart to take this role when he really didn't want to, and the end result was playing the character that he called his favorite of the ones he played. The movie was therapeutic for him as well. Stewart said that acting out the scenes where George was enraged was cathartic for him. While filming the scene in which George prays in the bar James Stewart was so overcome because of how low he felt in his own life that he began to sob. Frank Capra later re-framed and blew up the shot because he wanted to catch that expression on Stewart's face. It really hammers home the feeling of Stewart BEING George Bailey. James Stewart was such a brilliant actor anyway, but this role might have been great therapy for him as well as a perfect role for him to play. And if nothing else we can be thankful to the awful Mr. Potter for getting Jimmy Stewart to do this movie.
George loved and wanted Mary, but his first dream was to go on grand adventures and the accomplish building great things. Embracing Mary meant giving up and letting go of all those other ambitions. That's why he was conflicted.
Mr Potter is played by Lionel Barrymore, who is the grandfather of Drew Barrymore. Another wonderful movie that he was in, and this time he was not the villain, is a movie called Captains Courageous. I don't know if it would be a very good reaction, because at this point, only people who love movies have seen it. But it is a wonderful movie and it would be an hour and a half that you would treasure.
Glad you got to see this. Back when movies were great. Jimmy Stewart is an American Treasure! This movie was filmed just after WWII. James was a pilot in the Air Force and was still suffering from depression and severe PTSD from his experiences during the filming of this movie.
What many people don't realize is that Jimmy Stewart (George Bailey) was a real hero of WW II. He was a B-24 Bomber pilot who flew 20 combat missions over Germany. Stewart became Wing Commander of an entire squadron of bombers and was awarded the 2nd highest medal - the Distinguished Flying Cross (2nd only to the Congressional Medal of Honor). This was Stewart's first film since returning from the war. He eventually attained the rank of Brigadier General of the Air Force Reserve.
The bank runs caused many banks to close thus destroying the savings of millions of people. That's what led to the Great Depression. The Bailey Savings and Loan survived with $2 because they were still technically liquid at the end of the day when the "Bank Holiday" began, closing banks by order of the President until the Federal Reserve could flood the banks with cash.
The "Crash" was in October, 1929. This bank "run" is a little later, in the 1930s. There were a few back then. It is in 1934-35 that Potter offers a position to George. If 1934, the $20,000/yr that he offers is like $470,000 today. If 1935, $400,000 today. The $8,000 that Uncle Billy lost in 1945, and for which George is facing prison, is like $140,000 today.
I'm 60 years old, I have watched this movie every Christmas season of my entire adult life, and it still makes me weep every year. Merry Christmas everyone!
57 and same thing
I'll be 63 four days after Christmas.... My favorite movie of all time perhaps.... I cry like a baby every time.... Prayers up ❤️🙏

Merry Christmas/Yule and a happy new year.

The judge at the dance contest was the mayor in, "Meet John Doe" and, Annie, the maid, was the voice of Mammy Twostockings in the Tom & Jerry cartoons.
im 90 & enjoy the richest meanest man played by Lionel Barrymore, a brilliant performance

A very honest reaction to an all-time great movie. You're definitely not human if this one doesn't jerk a tear or 2.😢😢...
Thank you for making the video in black and white, too. Its wonderful.
No shame in crying while watching this Masterpiece. If a person doesn't cry watching this, they have no soul.

Great movie it actually seems better every time you see it everyone in the movie was excellent
Thanks!
Unforgetable movie 🌲.
Feliz navidad, muchacha!
It's a wonderful reaction. Be prepared for tears every time you watch this movie.
Definitely one of my top 10 movies all time 😊
I'm sure you know by now that Frank Capra directed a few other notables, some of which are probably familiar to you (It Happened One Night, Meet John Doe, Mr. Smith Goes To Washington). Thank you for the wonderful Christmas memory, for allowing me to share your first reaction to an old favorite of mine from childhood. 💛🎄
Great reaction. Merry Christmas
Happy Holidays Verdy!
Movies are still great man cmon 😅
@@clarkness77 No, they aren't. They're tools of indoctrination and your statement was foolish. You must be a brain dead Leftist.
So glad you got to experience this classic! :)
I always enjoy watching people’s first reaction to this movie.
My favourite Christmas movie.
Great reaction!!
Merry Christmas and happy holidays 🎉
Cue drinks 😂
Awesome reaction as always Verdy ❤
Really enjoyed your reaction. Merry Christmas 🎁🎄
Nice Reaction, another classic I think you will enjoy is "The Bishops Wife" Merry Christmas!
