- This episode of the WARRIOR'S REALM features Hanshi William Dometrich, a pioneer in American Karate and martial arts. He began his training in Japan in the early 50s directly under the founder of Chito-Ryu Karate, Dr. Chitose. He has had a long illustrious career not only in Karate, but law enforcement also; former Chief of Detectives - Covington, Ky Police Department and former Asst. Chief of Police - Covington, Ky Police Department are just some of his accomplishments outside Karate.
I met Mr. Dometrich back in the 90's. Great man.
I am so glad to be a practitioner of Chito-ryu. Thank you Dometrich-Sensei for bringing all that you learned back, and for the lessons that you passed on. I, and many, hope to respect your legacy, and I hope your inspiration lives for countless generations ^_^

Met this great man in Covington Kentucky at his dojo. Sorry to hear of his passing. Like all warriors, the end will finally come to us all.
While not a karate student I was fortunate to be mentored by Hanshi Dometrich and his role model daughter. At ar ripe old age I've come to realize there is a fine Chito-ryu dojo in my hometown.
That's one bad dude right there. Nice man. His daughter Devorah is my aunt, so I have had the privilege to know these people and travel and learn from them. Good times. Shotokan was a great dojo.
I remember hearing a story about 2 guys breaking into the dojo down in Covington. Big mistake haha
You should really check out his autobiography. Karate, The Endless Quest.
Who is saying thumbs down to Hanshi?
I was lucky enough to spend a year or so training under Hanshi in the mid 90's and learned a great deal. I've missed the opportunities to learn more about the history of karate since his passing. He was a very great teacher and a good man also. Osu!
I was also a very proud student of Hanshi Dometrich and in many ways still am. I loved the man like a father. I miss him but I know he'd just tell me to suck it up and get focused. I'm forever indebted to this man and his team. Thank you all from the depths of my heart.
I had Hanshi William Dometrich as a teacher. I was priveledged to have known him my entire life. My mother went to school with his youngest daughter and my father also had him as a teacher. He will be greatly missed. He passed away just a couple of months after this interview was posted.
