While not a karate student I was fortunate to be mentored by Hanshi Dometrich and his role model daughter. At ar ripe old age I've come to realize there is a fine Chito-ryu dojo in my hometown.

Grandmaster Fairbanks is the real deal. I recently had the opportunity to learn from him. He is so humble and gracious while being a powerful martial artist. I’m honored to have met him.

I studied under Sensei Fields in the seventies when he had his dojo on the corner of McMillan and Gilbert Avenue. I left Cincinnati to start my career in the United States military every time I came by to Cincinnati I will try to meet with Sensei Field. On my third trip back to Cincinnati I learned that he had ended his dojo in Walnut Hills and moved out to Avondale at this Old Firehouse all of Reading Road in Cincinnati Ohio. That was the last time I saw him for every time I came back to Cincinnati I can no longer locate where he could have been until now I find out if his passing. I am sad because I would no longer see him I could not get back in Cincinnati and time enough to locate him one last time to tell him how much I appreciate everything that he has taught me when I was a young boy. I hope to someday meet his family so I can tell them how much I admire their father.

I was also a very proud student of Hanshi Dometrich and in many ways still am. I loved the man like a father. I miss him but I know he'd just tell me to suck it up and get focused. I'm forever indebted to this man and his team. Thank you all from the depths of my heart.

It's good to see you are still doing your thing Sensei. Still look the same and your skill is still top notch. Last time I saw you was in 1999...right before I went to my permanent duty station. I was running in a park in North Side in my BDU pants and combat boots with a stick in my hand and you stopped me. I bowed and gave you a hug and you said I thought I recognized one of my students. We laughed a long time over that lol. Thank you sir for teaching me what it meant to be a man , a good human being , a warrior and a true Karate black belt. Next time I'm back home in Cincinnati I'm going to definitely come visit you. Take care. Osu

I was lucky enough to spend a year or so training under Hanshi in the mid 90's and learned a great deal. I've missed the opportunities to learn more about the history of karate since his passing. He was a very great teacher and a good man also. Osu!

I had Hanshi William Dometrich as a teacher. I was priveledged to have known him my entire life. My mother went to school with his youngest daughter and my father also had him as a teacher. He will be greatly missed. He passed away just a couple of months after this interview was posted.
