Finding A Buck's Bedroom And How To Set Up

  • Early last week we were out working on our Bureau County, IL farm and found numerous rubs in a small area and a cluster of beds on the edge of a ridge.
In this video we show how to interpret the sign and how we would set up to hunt that deer based on where we know he is bedding. This strategy works best in October, but any time you find sign like this it can teach you something!

    About The Whitetail Group
The Whitetail Group was created by Bobby Kendall with the vision of becoming the country’s preeminent developer of recreational properties for the ELITE whitetail hunter. Bobby’s passion for the outdoors and recreational development burns so hot that he moved his entire family to the Golden Triangle in West Central Illinois from their home in Up-State New York. Bobby’s entire career has been devoted to honing his woodsmanship skills and continuing to deepen his understanding of the behavioral patterns of America’s most popular big game animal. This knowledge and understanding of whitetails manifests itself in the careful layout and meaningful improvements made to each tract of land The Whitetail Group develops.

I often find lots of rubs near doe Bedding just off field edges, I'll bet I could get lots of night time Buck Pics there. I'd look deeper.

Here in NW Alabama big woods I find areas like that with big aggressive rubs only in rut bed areas. A big buck will wait on the does to come to him in areas like that. But a bucks core here looks entirely different. But I still get excited on any big rubs.

I’m with @wnyprepper. While a mature buck(s) has obviously spent some time there, bucks don’t bed during the day next to a field, especially where there’s no cover.

its a myth that bucks have to have a ton of cover to bed. In hill country such as WV, bucks prefer to bed on points where they can see with just a little cover at their backs. It doesnt have to be a lot of cover.

How many yards would you say the bed was from the edge of field? And Do you typically see deer bedding in layers so does bedding closer to food then bucks behind them or bucks bedding right close to the edge of transitions?
    Thanks

Hey I wouldn’t say it was one bed … there were several beds in a 20-30 yard area on that point .. down out of wind but watching over below. I think it’s kind of random how they bed .. however a mature buck generally seems to bed somewhere he’s learned that works for him over the years to escape from danger .. typically I’d say by himself most of the time and in the most ideal spot around

Pressure from hunting determines this on public. But 99 percent of the time young deer and doe bed on the field edge or right in it regardless of wind. Bucks will well over 100 yards away from them and always will use thermals and wind to their advantage. If there is a ridge he most definitely walking down that point marking his rut area where he wants to breed and the circling off a bench with the wind crossing his face smelling his bedding area out and the j hooking back up into it and he will bed there off the ridge where the wind is pulling down into a valley or bowl and as the sun comes back up the thermals will rise pushing any scent from down below up the hill into his face where he can see and smell danger along with the wind falling over the ridge top where he can hear and smell danger. Impossible to just walk up on him unless you're coming off a cross wind and moving dead ass quiet. That's where scouting comes into play. If you spook him out and there is all kinds of hunting pressure he might not come back to that bedroom until next season or ever. If it's unpressured he will come back in a couple days or so.

Pressure for sure dictates where deer bed but bucks will bed on points a lot where does funnel into a field or pinch points, bluff gaps etc. he will make big rubs in a cluster because he is aggressive while he is there. There cores usually have very little sign. If hunters hunted mature buck habitat and not rubs they would kill a lot more big bucks!

That area isn’t nearly thick enough for a buck to be bedding there. He’s definitely bedding close by but likely in much thicker timber. Those beds you found are likely doe beds.

@@TheWhitetailGroupI agree. I think people undervalue the importance of visual security with bucks. They love to be able to see a long way. That said the sign can be misleading as well. You might find the same situation with no rubs and assume it’s doe bedding. Not always the case. If there is only one mature buck in the area he doesn’t have the competition hence little or no sign. The situation you found is likely several decent buck competing in that area. I found young buck will tear everything up regardless but more mature animals leave sign for a specific reason ie competition from a similar age class animal.
