The first movie I ever went to see and one of my earliest memories. It was a drive in. My parents actually thought my sister and I would sleep in the backseat while they watched the movie in peace. I was four and my sister was three. We didn't sleep. I remember I really enjoyed it, especially, "Push the button, Max!" Oh, and the pie fight!
Curtis, Lemmon, and Wood, all at their absolute peak. Wonderful actors, great comedy and a theme that tugs at your heart from the very first note. This was the Golden Age.
This Mancini score deserves a release with all the original cues from the motion picture. We have Mancini's re-recordings but the originals are yet to be released.
Saw this originally when l was 10. It was my dad's favorite comedy, l can still here him laughing in the theater today. This film still brings fond memories, makes me laugh today, and l still feel Jack Lemmon should have gotten an award for his performance.
A wonderful masterpiece by the legendary Henry Mancini. Truly one of the best love songs ever written. Its kind of sad to listen to it though with the recent passing of Tony Curtis and when you think tragic ending to Natalie Wood's life.
Another reason a remake wouldn't work these days is the lack of what used to be known as the "character actor." No Keenan Wynn, no Peter Falk and so on.
RickMHobson all a remake would be is violent raunchy all sporty and such Hollywood today has no new ideas for films just bringing back movies once made and put on screen with to much technology to them
My dad was born in 42' and so, I was privalidged to grow up watching old Hollywood Classics like these. Probably my favorite is My Fair Lady but watching this lovely movie made me wonder if that might be change. :)
The Great Race airs Wed morning (12:35am CT, Oct. 12, 2022) on Turner Classic Movies (TCM). Prior to it at 7pm (CT), "Those Magnificent Men In Their Flying Machines" (1965), then at 9:30pm (CT) is the funniest film I've ever seen: "It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World" (1963). Followed by The Great Race at 12:30am. At 3:30am (CT) is "The Fortune Cookie" (1966) starring Jack Lemmon and his great friend Walter Matthau.
I was looking up "The Persuaders" on UA-cam when I learned of the recent death of Tony Curtis. This movie, "The Great Race", is my favourite film of Tony's. Bernie Schwartz, RIP - long live 'The Great Leslie'!
Fun fact:Looney Tunes soundman,Treg Brown worked on this film, why is why most of his iconic Looney Tunes sound effects(such as the famous Taz spin and the machine splutter effect)show up occasionally in the movie and he even won a Oscar for it the following year. Also, the film helped inspire Hanna-Barbera’s Wacky Races and DePatie-Freleng took a bit of inspiration from the film in one of their followup creations to The Pink Panther(they previously animated the titles to Blake Edward’s film of the same name that debuted the pink feline the previous year),Roland and Rattfink, inspired by Jack Lemmon’s Proffesor Fate and Tony Curtis’ The Great Leslie from the movie.
Just watched a documentary on Warner Studio Artist and Disney animator Tyrus Wong and this was one of the movies he did production art for and it occurred to me that these opening titles just scream his art style, I wonder if he did indeed do these.
I, too, would love to see a remake. But I seriously don't think it would work. Part of the problem has to do with comic timing: VERY few know how to use it today as effectively as Mr. Laurel and Mr. Hardy, Buster Keaton, Chaplin (and many others) did. And this includes producers, directors, writers, etc. Just look at the beginning of the pie fight and notice, before the mayhem starts, that the pie strikes corresponded to the music. Also, the comic tension with "You ... wouldn't ... DARE!!!
I love, how the audience is booing at Professor Fate, when he actually is the most enjoyable character in this movie. I found the great Leslie just to be bland in comparison. Ahhh, this brings back memories.
huipuipui I felt Leslie’s problem was the writing. They made his character so machine-like perfect and I felt Tony Curtis did as much as he could do with the character. He really demonstrated a strong charismatic presence which is necessary for lead characters. I agree though that Professor Fate was a lot of fun all around and the most interesting character and another reason why Jack Lemmon was such a legend.
I want all movies to start out like this with this song being used from now on. Even if it's something from DC Comics or Paramount or hell even an Asylum film. Just make this a mandatory thing from now on. Plus its giving me major Monty Python or a Mel Brooks movie type of feel
Something I always wanted to know and no pianist has been able to answer... who is playing those rapid piano 16th note runs and what is that technique called?! I know it's early Joplin Ragtime style, but even Joplin didn't use those rapid 16th note flourishes. It's amazing!
I don't know who is playing the piano for the introduction, but that flickering octave jump is called an "octave tremolo". There are a few videos on UA-cam that demonstrate the technique.
Tom Hiddleston wants to play the role of a moustachio comic baddy like Prof. F. And his laughter would be superb as the Crown Prince. Let there be a remake!
+J. Peters Not all! Larry Storch, 93 is still alive! 'Now, will you give me some fightin' room!?" --'Texas Jack', played by Larry Storch, as his trademark line in The Great Race. Also famed from his role starting the same year (1965), as 'Cpl. Agarn' on "F Troop" (1965-67)
xD immensity, so much feelings If someone want help me to realize something. What is the Life and the Cinema? wow Please contact me. Hollywood. Golden Age. And this kind of I don't know
Sorry I truly don't get why this film is so revered, I know its a parody of old films I see a lot of comedy in it but it just gets old quick you get tired of the 3 leads before the race even begins, which is way to far in, then you have a chance to get some variation of comedy with the other racers but they get rid of them in a minute. then they don't show any real parts of the race its just jumps to new set pieces, the race part of the title is useless . It just gets so tired and old quick, there is a reason films that this one is parodying is either shown in 5 minute cereals or 30 minutes tops
airplane any monty python movie, caddy shack, the jerk, hot shots, super troopers, any ,leslie nelson, 50% of national lampoon movies pre 2005 adam sandler movies, jim carrey movies, most Mel Brooks movies just to name a few movies made since then that are good slap stick movies

It's not the best comedy of all times, but I certainly wouldn't say it is atrociously bad. My opinion is that it has some pacing issues, but is still very entertaining.
One of the best movies of all time. Watched again this week. With the world today it’s nice to have a laugh.
It pleases me to no end that Stan Laurel was alive in 1962 and undoubtedly saw this film dedicated to he and Babe.
What a beautiful nostalgic film and music. My childhood in the cinema.

Top Film...Fantastic
For Mr. Laurel and Mr. Hardy. Says it all.❤
Watched this last night for the first time in years...had forgotten what a good movie it is.
My most favorite credits of all time, so touching and funny. And Gosh, I love Jack Lemmon :)

Movie is to long lemon is good a bit to much screaming
@@gkroll8467 Agree on the too long. Shoulda taken about 40 minutes off
@@robsmith6087 didn’t need the last part in foreign place wood was annoying
@@gkroll8467 but still one of the great movies of my lifetime
@@robsmith6087 not great some of it fine better comedies have been made

I was born in 2006 and i love this movie greetings from Holland
What fond childhood memories! For me this movie was always a special event whenever it aired on TV.
One of the beautiful opening credits ever made ! Masterpiece definitely, and the music of Mancini is a blessing ! One of my favorite movie !
Amen to that !!
The opening daredevil scenes were filmed all around Lexington KY horse country .
Glad you all like my upload.....beautiful music and wonderful actors! Thank you all. x
A wonderful masterpiece by the legendary Henry Mancini. Truly one of the best love songs ever written. Its kind of sad to listen to it though with the recent passing of Tony Curtis and when you think tragic ending to Natalie Wood's life.
I loved this movie growing up!
Me too ! As a kid in the 60s, I saw it at a downtown theater when it was first released way back in 1965 !!
Such a good movie! And I'm soo in love with this music.
I saw this on the big screen a couple of weeks ago with fellow fans and it was AWESOME!

The character actor is an extinct species. Such a shame since they were the glue that held innumerable films together.
I used to love this and It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World.
I still do.
Super movie and very talented actors and actresses!! Love this piano music style!! Thanks for posting.
I have a notion to second that emotion !
I love this movie so much :)

Sadly, Tony's co-star in "The Persuaders" (Roger Moore) is gone too. :-(

Good film , lovely melody , great actors ,dont make them like this any more .
stoney curttis . push the button max,. maxxxx!!! boom.
It was titled "The Sweetheart Tree"....however, the Oscar for "Best Song of 1965" went to "The Shadow of Your Smile" [from "The Sandpiper"].

Natalie Wood in a corset covered with whipped cream.

He said that?
hugh0221 I have heard no such news, but I suppose that's to be expected.
And a Great Race II about the first Indy 500!
@DarthWill3 I agree. He was the true leading role of the film.
Genial película
tthis film if it was remade would have been a geat one for the newer comediannes damn good film ratingis an a plus
such a great flick this was.. great soundtrack...is everyone in this film gone now..?

Tony's wife's name was Leslie
A tree that will give you a sign. ❤️
this film if was it was redone back than could have also used vincent price in a cameo role as well.
I loved this movie and so did my dad.
I guess IMO it was just a tad too long. Still: it's great an I loved the soundtrack.
Natalie Wood , was perhaps the most beautiful ,actrice of Holly !
Aren't you forgetting about Hope Emerson ? Talk about "hubba hubba" !!
Dick Dastardly was based off Professor Fate.
This movie is better than brilliant ooo
I am Professor Fate
I really sympathize with the Professor, but the writers won't let him win.
This has a very strong Monty Python vibe (or the other way around, as this came first)
A good movie, but basically it is an over long Road Runner/ Wiley Coyote cartoon. Fitting that it was released by Warner Brothers.
@cookieshopgirl look up liteady73 and you'll find the full length version of this wonderful movie! Hope my info helps! Take care my friend! :)
Natalie Wood [Natalia Nikolaevna Zakharenko ]❤
@iumans Me too!
I didn't know Owl's VA from Winnie the Pooh was in this film
could u add this movie
@hugh0221 he's the badie
This needs to be in "Scope".
Or Cinerama.
But Panavision does well enough.
xD immensity, so much feelings

+w7100 One reason it is so well-remembered today is that there are so few good comedy slapstick films in the past 50 years since The Great Race.

I lasted through about nine minutes of this atrociously bad movie before I bailed - and that includes the opening credits. Truly awful.
Nooooo these are classics! Give them a try and you'll see why :)
