  • Ustaad Ranbir Singh teaches Taus and Dilruba.
Ustaad Ji is a very fluent expressionist of all the styles of the Sikh Music. He is gifted in rendering Dhrupad to Khyal, and light music to traditional folk music of North India.
In this video he is seen playing Raag Tilang on the Dilruba.

So lovely! I always feel that raags are like water in the way they continuously flow and tumble forward--as if over and around stones and through little circular eddies. The sound of this instrument is so profoundly moving it's difficult to put it into words. Thank you so much for posting these wonderful videos! It's a true blessing to hear this level of playing!

as Guru is someone who helps you spiritually,
Ustaad is someone who teaches you things, i.e, music.

Wow... this is my first time hearing a dilruba. I've been playing violin for 10 years, and really wanted to pick up sitar at one point... This might just be a better option. I like how the sound has VERY clear sitar AND violin elements to its sound. Cool stuff...

So very melodious. This definitely has a calming effect on the mind. Tilang is quite popular in Carnatic also.

How unfortunate that people react that way to your sitar--I think it's one of the loveliest instruments on Earth (as is the dilruba)! We have a wonderful restaurant (our favorite, by the way) here in Lancaster, PA where a gentleman plays sitar on Saturday evenings--when we go we try to make it on a Saturday so we can hear the lovely music.

Gurdial Singh & Sons is where I bought mine. It's really good and my ustaad bought a tanpura from there to, (not electric).

    Hello dantheartisan,
Good to see you learning! Singh is a surname which was given to the Sikh nation by our beloved Satguru Gobind Singh Ji. It means "Lion" and reminds us that we are no less fearless than one.
"Ji" is a term which is used to give respect to someone, kind of like saying Sir or Madam.
    Hope it helps!
Btw where are you getting your dilruba from?
    Regards,
    GSN Team

Thank you so much for you reply! I will finish this day wiser and more educated than I began. This is the purpose of a day. Yes?
I am buying Dilruba on the net from a place called Crafts of India. I hope it is worth while.
Here in US, we can't go to music store, play a Dilruba or Sitar to know it's quality. It's very dificult to know if price is right on web, and if the quality of the instrument is good.
When I play Sitar in public, people act like I'm playing something from outer space.

    Dear Peter,
the one being played in the video is of raj musicals and is probably the same one they are advertising on their website. Yes it does have the jawari at the top.

If I may comment, a Satguru is someone who helps you spiritualy, Guru is just a Sanskrit word which means teacher, literally translating as he who delivers one from darkness (ignorance) to light (knowledge). Many rashtri sangeet kalakaars are known as "Guru" as Ustaad is a word which is derived from muslim languages.
Its just different words meaning the same thing.

I'm using piano wire at the moment. You can also use guitar strings with either the ball end cut off or with the ball end left on. My dilruba has 6 main playing strings and I've never tried it but the gagues seem to be more or less complementary to guitar gagues. Any kind of string can be used as long as it's metal. More often than not musicians will buy strings in coils and cut off a length to fit.

Love it. Thanks for making and posting. I have played guitar for last 45 yrs. Ready to expand!! I love this instrument and your playing.
What is a good brand or maker of these instruments? Where can I get one? do you like better than esraj? What, if any, are the differences?

    Nice Playing!
I'm a sitar player in the mid west of the USA. The closest I can get to having a teacher in this locality is listening, and watching when I can. I'm waiting for a Dilruba to arrive, So thanks for the lesson.
I hope you will excuse my ignorance, but just what does "Singh" and "Ji" mean?
