Do Catholics Follow All Those Weird Old Testament Laws?

  • Fr. Mike Schmitz explains why Christians are called to follow some laws of the Old Testament and not others. Passing on the advice of Pope Benedict XVI, he distinguishes between universal laws, like the Ten Commandments and “case by case” laws, like those to be followed only in the kingdom of Israel and the temple.

As an atheist, I must say this was an informative video. Well done. Do you have biblical references? References that show that God was "OK" with us no longer following 2 of the 3 categories of his laws? I follow the logic, however I am curious as to when God deemed it OK. Cheers.

Are you atheist or agnostic? If atheist why are you asking for biblically references? There was a general progression of laws. First in the garden was one commandment. Then ten after the exodus immediately followed by hundreds of commands on what to do and what not to do, then Jesus condensed them into two. The really important thing Jesus did was give a path to forgiveness and open the gates of heaven so we could return to God since we had been separated since the garden. God spoke to Peter and told him he has made unclean animals clean in Acts which throws out the dietary laws. Christ said divorce wasn’t of God but Moses for the hardness of man’s hearts in the gospels. Makes me wonder what wasn’t inspired but instead put in there for acceptance in that particular time? Keeping it simple didn’t help man follow God’s laws nor did providing hundreds of positive and negative commandments: don’t sleep with your uncle’s wife and rest the land every 7 years for examples. Jesus was not thrilled with the Capital punishment for adultery and not healing on the sabbath.

It says to not mix wool and linen, not just any mixed fibers.
They don't sell wool and linen mixed fabric in fabric stores. If you mixed wool and linen it would not be a good fabric, because wool and linen shrink differently when they get wet. Possibly this meant any animal fiber mixed with any plant fiber would do the same.

Yashua came for the House of Israel (the lost sheep). To bring the House of Israel (Israel and those grafted in by Abrahamic covenant) and House of Judah (Jews). Apostles and Jesus practiced the Torah (including 7 Feasts). Apostles continued this (even Paul). Yashua came to fulfill (not abolish) the law. Until heaven and earth pass away not one jot or tittle will be removed from the law (law IS Torah) until all is fulfilled. We are to walk as He walked. Nothing more than Jesus was nailed to the cross. He fulfilled the OT prophecy. The law will be practiced in the Kingdom (the bible speaks endlessly on this) after the second resurrection so we should be walking that out now or be prepared on the day of judgment. No one escapes judgment. Jesus preached from the OT as there was not a NT. Please pick up an aramaic bible (one of the oldest). I was born and raised Catholic. Walked away when my questions could not be answered biblically. Now I am a bible believer only having His Word as my authority. Please educate ones self on indulgences. Still practiced today. No man can forgive sin ever. Sunday is not holy day. Catholic church not first church. Mary has no power whatsoever. She was a sinner. Catholics refer to her as Queen of Heaven. No biblical reference of Mary as queen of heaven. The queen of heaven in Jeremiah 44 is referring to the moon, which the people of northern Egypt worshiped under this name, as also that of the Celestial Venus, Diana, and Isis. Catholics call her Mary. It was idol worship. Mary is put on a pedestal for Catholics, however she was just a woman. She has no authority in Heaven and is spoke of very little in the bible. She cannot hear your prayers and she is not a mediator. She died and also awaits the second resurrection when the followers of the Creator's instruction (Torah) come out of the graves in resurrected bodies! The creator and his son will come down from Heaven to establish the Kingdom. So much more I could write. I am not here to criticize just give an understanding you may have never heard. It has now been nearly 15 years since I begged the Father in Heaven to please give me understanding. Be prepared because if you truly want truth He will open your eyes and ears to the most beautiful story you may have never heard. Fifteen years and I cannot put it down. There is no OT God versus NT God. He does not change, that is the absolute Glory of him. He is everlasting bringing forth his Son so that we may be followers of his instruction. Peace.

    • @dioscoros
      @dioscoros 6 років тому +17

      Chill Goa
Short answer - We go to heaven immediately unless we have to go to Purgatory for a time, either of the two are immediate.
(That is, unless you aren't in hell, God willing)
Long answer - This idea of 'sleeping' in the grave until the second coming is actually attributable to a pope who was a heretic, his name was John XXII. He was the pope who canonized St. Thomas Aquinas, yet he held this teaching until he finally recanted it on his deathbed.
His heresy (which was a heresy because he held it after being corrected) was that souls did not enter the beatific vision (heaven) until after the second coming.
Fun fact: Pope John XXII was even condemned by a council.

Luke 9:28-30 (KJV) Jesus do pray before He do anything, so christian must pray to do God Will.
28 And it came to pass about an eight days after these sayings, he took Peter and John and James, and went up into a mountain to PRAY.
29 And as he prayed, the fashion of his countenance was altered, and his raiment was white and glistering.
30 And, behold, there talked with him two men, which were Moses and Elias:
First, Jesus Pray. Then Jesus talk to Moses and Elias.
Mark 12:27 (KJV) God of the living, not dead or sleeping.
27 He is not the God of the dead, but the God of the living: ye therefore do greatly err.

Well, there are an awful lot of details in the Old Testament about just exactly how we're supposed to sacrifice live animals to God and we're talking lots of them. The penalty for doing this improperly was sudden death, in fact Aaron's son died a fiery death because of this. Ask those who practice Judaism why they no longer follow all those laws and get back to me, I'd love to hear what they have to say about it.

Things like not shaving your beard could of been because the hebrews left egypt which males and females were known to dress as the other gender and were very deviate so it was important that in hebrew culture men were men and women were women. Also other laws like leaving a quater of your harvest so it can re grow just seems more like life advice not really law.

Fantastic question, I've been thinking the same and I think it's our biggest problem within the church; ignorance. I think there is some ineffective methods and people who aren't up to speed on everything so they make false claims and it spreads. The best way is begin teaching ourselves with the advice of priests I think.

I think it clearly does. This applies, in proportional measurement to all the OT laws

Hey, my kid keeps asking why Christians say that the laws of the old testament don't apply to them, and I told him that the pastor said that the new testament changes that, and he gave me this quote from Matthew, and I don't know what to say in response.
Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. Anyone who breaks one of the least of these commandments and
teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. (Matthew 5:17-19)
Can anyone help me with this? Reading this, it really seems like Christians need to follow mosaic laws.

    Fr. Schmitz,
Jesus did not abolish the Torah (the 613 Commandments contained therein). He made that very clear when speaking to the Jews. However (this is a biggy), we can see clearly in Acts and the Epistles, that most of these Laws don't apply to Gentiles (Gentiles were never part of the Mosaic Covenant), but only to Jews. A debate arose when Gentiles began converting to Jesus and some of the Jews were saying that they needed to be circumcised (convert to Judaism) in order to be saved. This did not go well with the Apostle Paul. This dispute was resolved with an Apostolic Council in Jerusalem, where Peter (the 1st Pope) makes it clear that God does not require Gentiles to convert to Judaism to be saved (the Cornelius story), thus are not required to keep those commandment (Mitzvot). However, this exception does not apply to Jews who convert to Christianity. This can also be seen clearly in the NT, but especially Acts and some of the Epistles (See James comment in Acts 28, and also see how Paul has Timothy circumcised though he is vehemently opposed to circumcision of Gentiles. Timothy is a Jew because his mother was a Jew).
In a Nutshell. Gentile Christians are not required to observe all these 613 Commandment, simply put because there are not Jews (the Torah makes it clear that only some of them apply also to Gentiles also, and those are known as the Noahide Laws, which can be traced back to Noah). Christian Jews are still required to observe all these Laws because before coming into the New Covenant they were already in the Mosaic Covenant. The latter does not abolish the earlier. God always builds upon previous covenants. He never abolishes them. So, when it says that Jews are to observe the Feast of Passover forever, it means just that.
With that said, many of the strict observances that we see with Orthodox Jews (Haredi & Hassidic for example) are not always based on Torah, but are Rabbinical expansions developed over the centuries after the destruction of the Temple in 70 AD.
    I hope this helps

The word "kill" is a loose translation. A better word conveying the encompassing meaning of the command is murder. Meaning, selfish or unjust killing. God orders many people to execute and kill others in the Bible, so obviously all killing is not wrong.

Hi Fr. Mike! One of my dearest friends is Orthodox Jewish- and we were talking this morning about the situation in Israel. People her brother has looked up to his whole life have been killed- and looking more into it, Anti-Semitism is rising across Europe in a way that seems very reminiscent of the 1930s. She even looked at me today and said, "people say the Jews control the media. If we did, don't you think they'd be hearing about this?" My heart breaks so much for her and her family- and Jesus was a Jew, Mary was a Jew, Saint Joseph was a Jew-- these are our brothers and sisters, our Faith has flowered from the roots of Judaism. What can we as Catholics be doing to help?

Think of how many people would become Catholics if they saw just how much we care for them. As your own name implies if we want the world to be Catholic, we need to first be truly Catholic ourselves.

      Scriptures way.....
"Hail Mary, full of grace. The Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amongst women, And blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
      Luke 1:28
[28]And upon entering, the Angel said to her: "Hail, full of grace. The Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women."
      Luke 1:42
[42]And she cried out with a loud voice and said: "Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb.(Jesus)
=="Holy Mary, Mother of God (Jesus), Pray for us sinners, Now and at the hour of our death. Amen.
"She will give birth to a son. (Jesus)
      Isaiah 7:14
[14]For this reason, the Lord himself will grant to you a sign. Behold, a virgin will conceive, and she will give birth to a son, and his name will be called Immanuel.
"And it came about that Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the baby leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. And she cried out with a loud voice, and said, "Blessed among women are you, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! And how has it happened to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?
      Luke 1:41-43
[41]And it happened that, as Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the infant leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.
[42]And she cried out with a loud voice and said: "Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb.
[43]And how does this concern me, so that the mother of my Lord would come to me?
"One may argue that Elizabeth uses the phrase "my Lord" instead of "the Lord", so it means something else. This argument is weak at best. Elizabeth as a devout Jew recognized God as her Lord. The psalmists refer to God as "my God" and "my Lord" as in Psalm 35(34):23.
      Psalms 35:23
[23]Up, awake, to my defence, my God and my Lord, to my cause.
      "Birth to a Son.(Jesus)
      Matthew 1:23
[23]"Behold, a virgin shall conceive in her womb, and she shall give birth to a son. And they shall call his name Emmanuel, which means: God is with us."
"Now the procreation of the Christ occurred in this way. After his mother Mary.
      Matthew 1:18
[18]Now the procreation of the Christ occurred in this way. After his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they lived together, she was found to have conceived in her womb by the Holy Spirit.
"The holy one who will be born of you.(Jesus)
      Luke 1:35
[35]And in response, the Angel said to her: "The Holy Spirit will pass over you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. And because of this also, the Holy One who will be born of you shall be called the Son of God.
"They found the boy with his mother Mary.(Jesus)
      Matthew 2:11
[11]And entering the home, they found the boy with his mother Mary. And so, falling prostrate, they adored him. And opening their treasures, they offered him gifts: gold, frankincense, and myrrh.
When Jesus had seen his mother.(Mary)
      John 19:26-27
[26]Therefore, when Jesus had seen his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing near, he said to his mother, "Woman, behold your son."
[27]Next, he said to the disciple, "Behold your mother." And from that hour, the disciple accepted her as his own.
"The denial of Mary as the Mother of God is a subtle attack against the true divinity of Jesus Christ and His Incarnation: "the Word was God [John 1:1] ... And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us" [John 1:14].
      John 1:1
[1]In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and God was the Word.
      John 1:14
[14]And the Word became flesh, and he lived among us, and we saw his glory, glory like that of an only-begotten son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
