    OMG. My late husband and I were on our honeymoon and saw Wicked in previews in the Gershwin Theatre in October 2003. We also sat in seats G1 and 3. The Gershwin is the largest and most modern on Broadway. I felt sorry for Kristin Chenowith for the performance we saw. The day before she hurt her neck in the fight scene with Idina Menzel . She preformed the whole show in a neck brace.... what a trouper.

    2:58 FYI, Dogman The Musical at New World Stages was written by Kevin Del Aguila who plays “Osgood” in Some Like It Hot. Kevin is a true multi-hyphenate, a talented actor-comedian-musician and writer. The other well known show he wrote is Altar Boyz (which also had a long run at New World Stages).

    14:38 Beetlejuice actually had themed slush too, in green apple and purple grape. My boyfriend got one of them when we saw it last May. Didn’t know wicked had it! Edited to add that I’ve actually seen wicked with Alex Brightman as Boq when I was a child (i think a few times) so it’s another cool connection between the two shows

    If you think Gershwin theater has a weird entrance, the Marquis Theater (which was dark when you were in New York City) has the weirdest entrance. It’s in the Marriott on Time Square and to get to the theatre you have to take an escalator up to the 3rd floor.

    For the more modern theatres, the best is probably the Lyric (currently showing Cursed Child) -- that one was built out of two much older theatres that were next door to each other, and they kept the lovely old exteriors, but completely gutted the interiors and built a new modern space. (This was Garth Drabinsky's company, so it's gone through several changes of ownership and name since then -- it opened as the Ford Center for the Performing Arts.) It's by far the most physically accessible theatre (there is an elevator to the mezzanine!), and the seats are a bit wider than usual, and it's just really well designed. The stage and backstage areas were all set up with the expectation of really big shows with lots of special effects -- there's a bootleg of the original Ragtime production there where you can see how much stuff and people they can fit on that stage. (Based on the angle of that video, and a couple of special effects that I know were part of the show during previews but removed before the actual opening, i'm just about certain that it was filmed by someone involved with the production, with the intent of just using it to review and make changes and see how it looked, and then it somehow got leaked a couple decades later.)
    The absolute worst of the newer theatres is the Marquis. The orchestra section is incredibly steep, with stairs down the aisles so that your feet are basically level with the shoulders of the person in front of you. Zero accessibility -- there is just one entrance that can be accessed without stairs, at the back of the orchestra, so if you want a seat that you can get to without stairs, your only option is row Y. And from what I've heard, the backstage was clearly designed by someone who's never worked in theatre and had no clue how things are supposed to work -- nothing is where you'd expect it to be. And in the alleyway at the entrance to the theatre, there are some huge glass walls/windows that Beetlejuice always kept covered with fan art (which was nice.) Allegedly, the other side of those windows is the ensemble dressing room -- there wasn't enough dressing room space, and that was the only free space to put them, so they had to cover the windows so it wasn't visible to everyone walking by.
    Also, looks like you got to see Allie Trimm as Glinda! I love her in that role. (If you've heard her in anything else before, it's the original cast recording of 13 -- she was Patrice. Her understudy was Ariana Grande.)

      Also the Marquis by far has the worst lobby set up of any show. To use the restrooms you have to leave the theatre and use the ones in the hotel lobby, compared to the lyric where there’s several large restrooms.

    I definitely agree about the pedestrianising of the West End, the amount of times no one can fit around a theatre opening for the evening show is nuts. Also count the hundreds of times I’ve nearly been mowed down by cars and Ubers while I’ve stood at stage door cuz they’ve mounted the pavement.

    So exciting because I saw Wicked a couple of weekends ago! I was supposed to see it on Broadway back in 2007 but couldn't last minute because that very weekend the stagehand strike started. As in we woke up in NYC that morning. I the saw it when it came through touring a few years later, but as much as I enjoyed the touring show I think that touring shows have definitely improved in general sense then (a lot of bare sets back then for example). So I finally got redemption! Also my sister wasn't as impressed by the Hall of Fame (she isn't as much into theatre and its history as I am)
    All that to say, to see you talking about the same show and cast and theatre I had just seen was very cool and to see you ex ited about some of the same things we were!

    I have that For Good t-shirt from 13:31, got it on my second trip to see Wicked in London four years ago! I've been to see Wicked three times now (which is a lot for me, I generally only go and see most shows once, it's very rare I'll see something a second time and Wicked is the only show I've seen more than twice) so I'd definitely never wonder why you'd be going to see it again in New York when you can see it whenever in London. I'll definitely be interested to see your video about the differences between the London and New York productions. I never realised so many shows did themed cocktails, I'd never really noticed it in London till this year when I was at Wicked and saw their themed cocktails, and then again at Operation Mincemeat. It's very possible that West End shows have also always done themed cocktails though and I've just never noticed because I don't really drink spirits!

    Now I'm trying to work out which roads could be easily pedestrianised in London's theatreland. Several of the real big theatres are on major roads (e.g Apollo Victoria, The Dominion, several on The Strand), but having just been to the Noel Coward I'd suggest St Martin's Lane as a good option. You could extend out the pedestrianisation from Leicester Square which would include several theatres
    I'm going to spend way too much time thinking of ideas about this now!

    • @MickeyJoTheatre
      @MickeyJoTheatre  Рік тому +3

      Practically I think St Martin's would be great for this, it doesn't see much traffic anyway. I'd also suggest Old Compton Street for the Prince Edward which was pedestrianised during covid to allow for outdoor dining. Argyll Street where the Palladium is is another, people act as though it already is!

    Congratulations on coming in under 25mins in the 5k and for raising so much money. I know it's a great cause, so I wouldn't regret where the money went, but I'd have been pretty disappointed if you'd put in as little effort as some of the people on your team. Couldn't they just have formed a theater cheer squad if they wanted to live stream from the event but not participate?
