  • Crimson clover is one of the most popular cool season food plot forages, and for good reason. It’s highly nutritious with % crude protein in the mid-20s, can produce tons (literally) of deer forage per acre, and is an excellent re-seeder. But, it’s one of the first clovers to mature and die in the late spring. Adding a late maturing clover with crimson will provide more quality forage for deer into late spring and early summer.
Do you plant different clover species in your cool-season plots to maximize forage availability into late spring and even summer? Stay tuned for videos on later-maturing clovers.

I appreciate the video. Geared in Southwest Washington will have red clover come in the beginning of March and will be gone by mid-may when are winter wheat is the only thing that's in front of it.

Thanks for the time window on the red clover. I thought it lasted all summer.

South Carolina planted Crimson in the middle of interstate seventy and there were dead deer all over the side of the interstate.

We are in zone 3. Will crimson clover reseed if we are planting now September 1? Thank you for your great video and sharing your experience and knowledge.👍

Hello, have a question about Crimson Clover. I know it does well in cooler temps. In higher temps will it go dormant until soil cools down? I'm in SC, heartiness zone 8 and planted crimson around mid-june. Been very hot, up in 90s. Had decent amount of rain so not necessarily drought, just very hot. Will crimson start to take later in fall when temps cool down? So far doesn't look like ANY has germinated..thank you!!

In Mississippi, we usually won't plant clovers until late September and sometimes early November. It will germinate and grow an inch or two and them pretty much shut down over the winter. It really takes off in the spring.

I tried real hard to plant some in my woods - it simply does not take. It does not seem to like sandy soil in a clearing I have. I am close to the Chesapeake Bay and guess the soil dries too quickly. Jim

Check out Persian clover. It's supposed to do well in sandy soils.

It'll be green in the dormant stages of winter and it would be a great spot for does to use year round which will bring in the bucks during the rut
