    The more I think about it the madder I get. Gordon has been screwed by both of the point systems. 13 wins in '98 which is pretty much a lock that you make the final four. And then on the other side of it if they never changed it the championships would be reversed. Gordon would have 7 and Jimmie would have 4 . That's why they lost all of their fans, even the old ones. It wasn't broken. If you look at 24's top 5's and 10's to the 48's it's not even close. I'm talking hundreds more for Gordon. It ruined the sport in my opinion. Top 5's and 10's really just don't matter anymore. All you gotta do is win. It's been nothing but a detriment to the sport since it's inception. Example of why it wasn't broken: The last race of '92 there were 5 drivers still mathematically in the championship hunt . Take a look at some of the points battles before the Chase. Even when Gordon was winning all those races he only ever ran away with it once. All of the other ones were close. So conclusion: If you think someone is so much better than you , uh, get better. That's like telling the Patriots hey you're winning way too much. You only get to play with 10 guys this year. Gimme a break. Miss 11 races and win the championship ? No way it should even be possible. Totally unfair. That's why they raced with broken bones back in the day cause they knew if they missed a race their championship hopes were over. Ok, I could go on and on but I'm done with my rant. # nolongerdiehard

      @Chris Shockey . . . you made several valid aspects why this Chase system is a sham; as many previous Cup seasons had several drivers vying for the championship down to the last race of the season.
      In the Chase system, with the final 10 or so races of the season, one race slip-up by a driver, and he's out. The current Cup scoring system is totally bogus; where my viewing _minutes_ of Cup races are fewer in each succeeding year.

      I need to go see if I can find stats for using the old points system instead of chase points the last 20 years. I know many did it for about 10 years after the chase started. I quit caring who won the championship when the chase started. I wish they still used the older points system. No stages, no chase. Just points for position, leading laps, and an extra bump for winning a race. He who has the most points at the last race wins. We could even keep the lucky dog since we now have have instant cautions for safety reasons. I quit watching in 2017, but I'm really enjoying rewatching all the races I started watching in 95 til now. I doubt I make it to 2017 again. Maybe if they have highlight reels.

      @@Boggs1993 LOL what? 1998 was great, Gordon tying the modern record for 13 wins, something ridiculous like 8 straight races coming 1st or 2nd, Mark Martin's 7 win season, Dale winning the 500. In 5 years they ruin Nascar with the chase, this was one of the last great seasons.

    CBS was to air this race, but the postponement due to the wildfires and the network's concerns over going against Fox's coverage of Game 1 of the World Series resulted in the race being moved over to Cable TV via TNN. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think this was the first and last time TNN ever aired a NASCAR race from Daytona prior to losing the broadcast rights in 2000.

      Yeah, the Small Soldiers and Wild Berry schemes were supposed to be one-offs for this race only, but since they were at Talladega, they ran both races with the schemes on the car.

    As the 18th year of NASCAR Racing on Philippine Television went into it's homestretch, the Pepsi 400, which was originally scheduled for July 4, 1998, was rescheduled to October 17, 1998. GMA Network, who first covered NASCAR Races in 1981, along with it's telecast producers Television and Production Exponents, Inc. and SilverStar Communications, Inc., rescheduled the Daytona Night Race from July 5 to October 18. This was due to the fact NASCAR's 50th Anniversary continued

    I don't even watch what they call Nascar now. I'd rather watch this real racing like this one . I'm quite content. Bunch of immature little punks who drive like their age . Nascar seems to forget most of these drivers are, let's face it, boys now. Aside from a few. Heck used to be you were lucky to get a ride by age 30. I think Earnhardt Sr. was a rookie at 29. Any of the drivers pushing 40 or older are on there way out and they know it. That's a big reason Johnson is retiring in my opinion. I mean Matt Kenseth isn't as good as William Byron, Bowman or Elliott for that matter? That's almost laughable. He's still as talented as he ever was. . Carl Edwards said see ya... Good for Carl...

    • @bloqk16
      @bloqk16 4 роки тому +1

      @Chris Shockey . . . when you wrote about drivers' ages, I remind myself that Bobby Allison was a force to reckon with at 50 years of age. Even Cale Yarborough was still in good form in his mid-forties. But then, those were *IRON MEN* of NASCAR; an era that is sadly long gone.
