- Camping fees are skyrocketing. It’s common to pay $30 a night at state parks, $50 at commercial campgrounds, and $100 at resort-style campgrounds. Many of us think there is a better way. A free way, in fact.
We sit down with our friend Campskunk, a fulltime RVer and a regular reporter on our RVLifestyle.com blog. And Campskunk tells us how to camp free, or if you must pay, how to camp for a very low cost. He reveals his secrets in our interview

Excellent interview! You asked great questions and your guest answered with his eye opening perspective from 8 years as a full timer. Great information. ManyThanks!
Great interview Mike. I would love to see more.
Campskumk told the story of a bear that ate a watermelon from somebody camp, then had to be destroyed! Bears are incredibly smart. If they are rewarded with an easy meal one time from a camper or fisherman, they will be back somewhere or some day. Please, Please use bear proof containers or Yeti like containers for your food and use the bear proof dumpsters and keep the doors latched! The irresponsible campers are to blame for the destroyed bear, or it may be relocated where it will have to fight to establish a new territory.
Campskunk is a great person and a good interview. Very helpful information.
Good info, Thank you.
Thanks! I really enjoyed this one.
😊
Will a bear show up if you are eating a watermelon?
Please, do more of these type of vids. Always enjoy Campskunk vids. Maybe follow Campskunk or vid yourself using your app to find a dispersed site and driving to it, evaluating it, setting up etc. Vid the whole process.
Would like to see more videos on dispersed camping on free lands.
Would love more videos like this one. Campskunk was a great guest!
"You don't have a lot of control over the guest list if you know what I mean" Haha
Today is March 1 9 2020 🙏 Warming up a little.
Here Warren Michigan ✋ 👍. Course we've got Corona virus shutting down America 🇺🇸 🛐🙇😟😨😰😧 Good video. I'm not a camper 😧
Wish I was. Here in Michigan they call it dispersed camping. I don't think there places
To disperse camp south of M-55. There's a spot near Reedsburg dam . Off 127 west of Houghton lake. Used to snowmobile over that way. Like to see someone do a video of places like that 🙏👍safe camping , travels 👍🇺🇸
I’m relatively new to your UA-cam channel and podcasts. These are just great! Truly useful and informative.
Great information thank you. I’m gathering as much information I can before I start my rv Adventures. Thank you
Very helpful interview. Thank you so much Mike and Jenn.
Another great interview. Class Bs are great for nomadic vacations, but I've learned to stay in one place longer. Through your travels, if you come across somebody who likes to set up for weeks at a time, I'm always interested in seeing how they make themselves at home. Happy Travels.
Great segment Mike. Extremely informative from Campskunk guided by your interviewing skills! More, please.
I love Boondocking so much better then RV park camping. I wouldn't want to live back east, not enough Boondocking oppertuninties for my liking!
Great tips! We just got our class B+/C and live in Utah so lots of opportunities in my area.
I concur!
As a new comer to RV camping, I seek out all the great information I can find. I thank you for all I've been able to learn through your work. I enjoyed this interview and loved the scenery in the background. In connection with boondocking, I'd like to learn more about how long you are able stay in boondocking site before you would have to refill and empty your water and waste and, if you are always boondocking, where do you go to fill your water tanks and empty the holding tanks. Thanks for being so helpful.
This was a great and informative interview! Thank you very much, this is the kind of RVing I hope to be doing soon!
I’m new to your channel. This interview was was very interesting. I would love to see more interviews. BTW I love your channel. You and your wife are fantastic ❤️
A very interesting interview. Yes, I would like to see more of them. This topic and the issues surrounding them , freedom camping V staying in paid camp sites are universal and not limited to the States. Apart from dealing with wild animals, I could easily be listening to a fellow camper from my own country giving advise. In New Zealand where I live, I struggle to justify paying some of the fees charged by some camp sites who charge per person not per vehicle. It is unfortunate that currently these fees discourage mostly young foreign campers in non self contained vehicles to freedom camp and to unfortunately leave a mess behind which give all freedom campers a bad rap. Happily I belong to a Motor-home/caravan association that has many camp sites all over the country, maintained by local club members for the exclusive use of club members that are secure, close to amenities and cost $3 per person per night.
Absolute delight to watch this. The lady was behind two cameras! Talking to people who actually do camping in the wilderness is so informative and an eye opener. Thanks.
I'm greatly enjoying your videos. :) Keep doing them! I need all the education I can get before I get.
This was great . Very in formative. Super guest he tells it like it is , very refreshing, more please ! Thank you so much
How do you get good internet so far out in the woods?
Mike this was by far the best interview to educate RV’ers about the free camping lifestyle. I have forwarded this video on to all of my RV friend and wannabes. One day are paths will meet and dinner is on me.
LOVE this interview. Traveling Europe now, soon to campervan USA & Canada as a complete novice who's done lots of research. This helps the fear factor. Thanks so much! 👏🏼
Now that was a great interview. Just starting my research for "full time" and I learned a lot. Thanks
I really enjoyed this video. I am new to the free camping world. I could use some pointers on how to find water and a dump site in the towns I visit.
Try the water treatment plants, where they treat the sewage. Sometimes they will have freed places to dump your black water
Where's the links mentioned? overnightRV dot com or something? and allstays?
Hello. Good information for the boondocker. I have a class A ,34ft , can't get into a lot of the way -out -of- the- way -places but I manage to fit into many as long as I plan ahead. I think any fulltimer needs to do that anyway. You have a safe journey and bye for now.
I'm so grateful for this channel!! Thank you so much!
hmmmmm.....could it also be that a person whos out there all alone---might be RUNNING FROM THE LAW? .LOL.
"No Control Of The Guest List!" LOL
"All the burglars are in town." Really? 'Cause half the time, they're in your bed, wherever that may be, and it's not only your stuff they want...
LOVED this video packed full of information!!
Newbie here, just wondering where you dump your grey and black water tanks when you camp in these places??
Good interview, Asked some excellent questions. Actually learned some new info. Keep up the good work Mike and Jennifer.
Looking for dispersed camping in Michigan. Not able to find anything in the Southeast or thumb area. Do you know of any? Eager to try it but not able to decide on a place. Any info that you can recommend would be greatly appreciated for Michigan. Love the interview lots of information and like one of your other viewer it was like two old friends sitting around talking sharing information. Pleasant!!
Another thing about bears I used to live near Cherokee N. C They had signs along the road saying don’t feed the bears There is a reason for that .People will start feeding the bears and there a lot of bears on the side of the road coming into Cherokee from Maggie Valley up through Soco Gap. When they run out of food the bears are still hungry and will try to get into the people’s cars .One bear even ripped up somebody’s convertible top on their car trying to get in
Great interview! Yes,please do more of these kind of interviews-this one was very enjoyable and informative.
great interview - can't wait till I retire to travel the USA as cheaply as possible.
Freecampsites.net and Campendium are great resources. If you boondock on public lands, please leave no trace.
I enjoyed this video. Campskunk knows how it's done!
"You don't have control over the guest list"---that is awesome. Love that description.
People like those commercial travel parks because of the kids facilities.
Mike, great interview with "Campskunk"! Keep'em coming, enjoyed it!
Yeah, loved these interview style of information, do more anytime.
Such an interesting video! Loved The no nonsense advice and perspective.

Great information, thank you
Great interview. Thanks!
Another great video .Please keep them coming . Thank you
YOU ARE KILLING THT GRASS.
Excellent. More of these please
I loved this visit with Campskunk.
Great video keep em coming
That was really good.
That was a terrific interview that seemed like a chat between two long-time friends. I love the tone and common sense advice. I was waiting to see what was said about security as so many of the forums have these touchy and often heated discussions about firearms and self-defense. As Canadians we just don't even think about firearms, so it all seems a little overly-aggressive or something. Knowing so many fine Americans as we do it didn't fit the image I have of the average US person. Anyway, it's great information and I really appreciate your videos!
Very informative, thanks
Tell us about tent spot
Great info!
This was great!
I also thought this provided good info. But we never learned why he is called “Campskunk”!
Julia C he was an auditor.... so at job sites no one wanted to socialize.
Sad!
great information.
I would love to see more interviews.
How would you camp with limited holding tanks would be very helpful in future videos
Really interesting discussion with Campskunk. Please do more video podcasts with knowledgeable campers.
I enjoyed your interview with Campskunk! I also liked your hats, how can I get one of you hats? Steve
We’ve been stuck in sand and mud, and needed to be towed out. This was in campgrounds. So we learned that our class B is no match for these conditions. Something to keep in mind when boondocking.
We've been forest camping off and on for 16 years now, and (knock on wood) haven't got stuck yet. We travel in a 24-ft Class C; but we also spent extra to get it converted to 4-wheel drive. And, for good measure, we carry a set of tire chains year-round -- just in case. You still want to use common sense selecting a site; and also keep a close eye on the weather forecasts. But hopefully, with these kinds of precautions it should at least minimize the chances of getting stuck.
Hubby and I are doing our research before buying an RV and I really enjoyed this interview video (plus hearing the birds in the background). I love hearing about free camping
Can you repeat the free parking, overnight like at Walmart? I stayed on and off at Trukking Restaurant and Truck Stop in Redcliff, Alberta and then moved over to Walmart. It was the closing time and opening time of Walmart that was hard with no toilet on board. They closed at 11pm and opened at 7am That was on the other side of Medicine Hat, Alberta. I would like to buddy up with another small homemade camper through Canada with my 2 caged pets and same without my 2 caged pets and head over the border. I know about the blood pressure goes down once I leave the City.
Thanks so much for this outstanding content. I'll be sure to follow your Facebook page for 'Campskunk' posts, as well as you and your lovely wife's most informative posts. You both are a treasure to the RV world. We are about to go from a luxurious 5th wheel to a small Class C - 25 ft. (new with all the updated goodies for boon docking). Camping like this is one of the reasons why. Bring on the solar!! Safe travels and blessings to you.
Nice job with your interview of Campskunk, Mike. I accept that the "Trailer Park" (RV park) aspect is a part of RVing. But to not be able to get to relatively secluded camping locations, More Often Than Not, would put a dagger in my RV interest. This video has woken up my interest again after viewing posts from RVers who explain the downside to the RV lifestyle. That would be the RV park for me. The dispersement sites you both discussed would be the reason to embark on RVing in my case. Thanks so much for this post and more like it please.
How much do typical full-time RVers pay for gas per year in a class C RV such as Leisure Travel Vans Unity or Pleasure Ways Plateau models?
Great information, one of your best videos! High five to Campskunk as well!
Thank you ,very cool info hugs from MN
I would love to see more videos on this and in The GEORGIA area. Help Please....
Terrific interview!! so glad you shared the video version. I live in New England. I should make it a goal to try and weekend warrior boondock through the Northeast. Safe travels.
Nice info thanks
That was most informative and interesting podcast on camping.
someone should offer the GPS files and data for sale to some of theses camp places... i would pay money for them.
