This was absolutely fascinating!! I had no idea how elaborate dachas were. It really is like a mini-house with everything you could need to live there--though maybe not so comfortable for long-stays lol! It was so interesting to see this from the perspective of someone who has only read about dachas in books or online. Also--the history of dachas in Russia at the start of the video was very helpful to understand their history & significance. Great content Niki!
"a mini-house with everything you could need to live" is exactly right! It's not always comfy but it's possible to live at dacha for the entire summer! Some people even make their dachas a year-round place to stay
@@NikiProshin yes, both words refer to the house itself. But in Canada the word cottage implies that the house is near water, like beside a lake. A cabin is in a rural or forest area not located near water.
@@NikiProshin Excellent point! In Canada it is more about the leisure and family time with maybe some flowers, a tomato plant or two, whereas your Dachas seem to be primarily about the land and growing healthy sustainable food. Cabins and cottages are more likely used as weekend or short term vacation, rather than a summer house full-time.
Your granny's dacha is lovely -- so well organized and colorful. I live in a big city in the U.S. It would be nice to escape to a dacha. Your granny is a hard worker. It seems like most are -- and they're good at putting one to work :-) The shish kababs looked so good.
Great video. Thank you for sharing a glimpse into your beautiful family and the real, everyday life in Russia. I enjoy learning about the history of regular people in Russia and not the skewed version's we all get from the gigantic media outlets in both countries. Great work as always and we look forward to your next educational videos
My pleasure! Thank you for mentioning the educational part of the video, just lately I understood that I enjoy putting some educational/useful stuff together with my everyday life here
That is a lovley place for your grandmother and she seems an ingenious person too. Other Dachas in Russia I have seen on UA-cam channels do not look so nice.
Great video, Niki! I've been fascinated by dachas since I first heard of them in the 1970's. I have a friend who lives in a Swedish city who also owns such a place, outside of town, where she grows vegetables, fruit, and herbs. It was great to see your mom and grandma!
Yeah, the thing you're referring is "kolonilott". It's very popular, but maybe not a part of the culture as much as "sommarstuga"- summer cabin. A sommarstuga is a house, often small, located on the countryside and often close to the sea or a lake.
You made a beautiful video, I truly enjoyed watching it. After living in europe when I was younger and doing much research my son and I decided to move to Russia. We believe a dacha would be perfect for us because we love nature, gardening and being outside of the city. Watching your video got us so excited for the move! Thank you for sharing and God bless. ♥️😊
Loved seeing your Babushkas dacha. When I was in Saratov, we went across the Volga River to a beautiful Dacha in Engles to spend the day. I loved that.
Thank you so much for this video! My friends keep telling me about their dachas but I had not seen one yet. This was such an interesting video! You have shared so many things in videos that I've been curious about, Niki!
Niki, this is my NEW FAVORITE VIDEO!!!! I hope Babushka is doing well!! Tell her "hello" and give her a big hug! I hope you all get to get back there soon as things get warmer. I'd love to hang out in a place like that. Peace from the USA!!!!
Niki, You have a lovely family. Your grandma’s dacha is wonderful and I am sure that you will have been blessed with great memories of fun happy times there. You are a great videographer and I really enjoy your content. 👍🏻😀
So cool to learn about Dachas! Still haven’t been to one but will make it out to one some day soon, or maybe I’ll wait for next summer it’s starting to get cold 🥶
Thank you Niki for sharing this with us! What a lovely Dacha, and family as well! I love how nice the summer home looks…very comfy. I wish Americans implemented a dacha home in the summer where we grew our own fruits & vegetables! Not many people have food gardens…maybe some flower gardens occasionally. Beautiful!👍
Lovely! In rural Indiana, US, especially in our old-order Amish and Mennonite communities, these are called "summer kitchens". They are very similar to what you have. The idea of ours is to cook, can and preserve the garden produce without heating up the kitchens in our bigger homes. A lot of our little summer kitchens are located in the back of our property away from the main residence, closer to the gardens and in the shade. Wonderful summer memories, thank you!
Reminds me of my summer in Васильево, a small place outside of Kazan. Spent couple of days there with my girlfriend and here family doing barbecue exactly like this. They also have a garden and they also have a баня ) the sauna is also very popular in russia, you could do a video on that as well. Very nice video, thanks for sharing!
Fantastic video. So beautiful and a privilege to see this from Australia. Thank your lovely Mum and Babushka and aunt for allowing this lovely video to happen.
Really enjoyed your video. Where I live the summers get very hot and humid. Gardening is something I tend not to do not only because of the westher, but also because of the invading insects, deer and turtles. I do love fresh vegetables from the garden though. Your grandmother's garden was terrific. Loved seeing it and the summer house. What a treat for you to visit.
We don't have Dacha in the UK. I know they have them in Sweden ( Summer house) I would love to be able to grow fresh fruit and vegetables. I live in an apartment in London🇬🇧. Thanks for the video💗👋😀
Very nice to watch. A lot of people from my town also have a summer retreat because the city gets really too hot and stuffy during summer, so we leave every time we can. Not many people grow vegetables though, unless they are pensioners and have the time to do it properly. Your granny though... a true farmer! She must be incredibly hardworking! Everything is very colourful and well kept!
That's a wonderful garden and a nice, comfy house. :-) Here in Germany we have Schrebergärten which are similar to dachas. I can't believe you're already 27 years old. You look like a kid. :-D
Thank you so much for giving such a positive view of Russia at this time and helping to alleviate so many current anti Russian narratives abroad at this time which are not the fault of its people.
In Slovenia, dacha is like personal "black market" garden near actual home or block and in dacha you have very very simple small wooden barack for ground or soil tools, maybe one or two beds if you have drunked thru the day working in the garden for salad potatoes and so on 😄😄 you can turn some barbecue and stuff, but no one barack dont have electricity, maybe water is on use but only if small river is near. Those wild gardens are prohibited and against law, but everyone knows that.
Love to see your summer cabin..I am from Alaska , most similar to your Siberia...short, intense growing season and many people have smaller summer cabins or fish camps near the rivers
Just got to see this comment. My granny is.. I actually can't recall how old she is exactly, she is older than 75 years old. Yeah, my memory is quite poor about age things

Granny is very stylish. Everyone looks healthy. The dacha setup is very similar to my grandma's summer garden season gatherings in the 60-70's.
"Now granny grows much less stuff"
*proceeds to show as many vegetables as you could find in a supermarket*

In Canada we would call a dacha a cabin or cottage. You are blessed to have such a lovely family. Thanks for posting!
Cabin/cottage is the house itself, right? The words dacha refers to the entire land + the house. Glad you liked the video!
