After streaming this recently, I wondered if I could "ghost" this level. It took a fair amount of planning and practice, but this is what I came up with. It unfortunately doesn't seem to be possible to completely ghost the level for a few reasons. I settled for two cigarette lures and using the Thief's rat distraction, since those are still sort of in the vein of a "no traces" concept.
Some things you need to know about this level:
1. The primary objectives are to heal Private Smith and have him use the enemy's radio. You also need to steal the codes, but those are in the safe next to the radio anyway.
2. Private Smith can't swim. This is a HUGE problem.
3. Private Smith can't climb rope ladders by himself. You need to group select him with someone who can (the Thief), so that you can trick the game into allowing him to climb the ladder. Notice that Smith just warps when he reaches the top of the ladder. Without this trick, the only option available would be the front door...which would be extremely difficult to pull off this way.
Because Smith can't swim, your only two options to reach the radio are across either of the two bridges. The lower bridge has ironclad enemy coverage that I couldn't find any way to break, and even if I could get through it, Smith can't safely navigate a minefield to reach the house. This leaves only the upper bridge as an option.
The upper bridge is covered by a whole group of enemies, but they actually aren't a huge threat. Instead, the real problem is that there's a guy looking out the window. This guy doesn't get distracted by the rat, and has perfect coverage of the area you need to pass through. Luckily, he can be lured by cigarettes. It's sometimes tricky to get him to actually notice them though.
Once the rat is doing its job and the guy inside is going for the cigarettes, you have to deploy the rat again very quickly. If you're too slow, the cigarette guy will see you before the rat starts round two.
The radio house is pretty strict on timing too. The lieutenant next to the ladder downstairs will always see you as soon as you climb down. Because of that, you need to lure him away with cigarettes before sending Smith down. However, you ALSO need to deploy the rat at a good angle before said lieutenant reaches a spot where he'll see the Thief. A quick second rat distraction buys just enough time for Smith to climb down and use the radio.
Of course, what happens to the Thief, Smith, and the rest of your captured commandos once the level fades isn't my problem. I'm sure they are all fine!
