About Aaron Blaise:

Aaron Blaise is an animation feature film director and wildlife artist.
For 21 years Aaron worked with Disney helping to create some of the greatest animated films ever made. During that time he worked as an animator or supervising animator on "The Rescuers Down Under", "Beauty and the Beast", "Aladdin", "The Lion King", "Pocahontas", "Mulan" and more.
In 2003 he was co-director of "Brother Bear" for which he earned an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Feature Film.
After "Brother Bear" he helped to develop several projects but ultimately left Disney to pursue an opportunity back home in Florida. Aaron recently served as 2D Animation Supervisor and Character Designer for the "The Bear and the Hare" an advertisement loved by millions around the world. (vimeo.com/78740926)

I completely forgot you directed brother bear. That movie is a masterpiece and deserves sooo much love. Also I wish we could also get our hands on Maquettes that were made from the original sculpt/mold for some of these old disney animated movies.
taking a sculpture maquette class would have been awesome. I got to learn animation from Phil Young, and he was doing a maquette class at my local college, but sadly passed away due to covid complications. Never got to take his course...he did teach me a lot though and I loved him as a teacher.
Damn Aaron this is so inspiring. Makes me want to get a resin 3D printer and print out sculpts I’ve done in Blender and Nomad for drawing reference. I’ve always wondered what Marc Davis’ Snow White sculpture looked like! Thank you for showing it!
I absolutely love hearing about the details of your job and the people you worked with. And hearing you mention that you worked on some of my favourite characters is just really making me happy in many ways.
I just love that Kenai and Koda Maquette.
I'm really upset Disney doesn't release pieces like this in large production for collectors. I absolutely love Beast, and it's damn near impossible to find an acceptable figure or statue of Beast that's accurate in likeness.
Bandai does this with anime and comic characters regularly. Not sure why Disney hasn't gotten up to speed on something like this.
because they are sooo invested in 3d animation thanks to pixar. now that they don't need sculptures anymore

That's not the point. They could make a lot of money off of these for merchandising. Do you have any idea how popular anime figures are in Japan? Hugely popular.
And companies like Bandai produce quality pieces with spot-on character likeness the size of these maquettes for dirt cheap, and that's where a huge percentage of Bandai's revenue comes from.

And just to say, all the figures/statues I've seen that are amazing for Beast's likeness have been from Bandai and Medicom Toy (both Japanse companies); with the exception of Jim Shore from the US. Who has only done a handful.

I took an entertainment illustration class, and maquettes were one of the assignments we had! I really want to take that class again and put in the new knowledge I have!

Thank you so much for sharing the maquettes, we started modeling those in my game design studies, so we could learn objects in 3D spaces for the 3D games we made. Super interesting work to create a fictional character within our haptic reality. Stay curious!

I've seen a few artists who use 3D Models instead of IRL sculptures.
What do you think? Is there a noticeable difference between using a "Virtual" Maquett vs. one you can actually touch and rotate with your own hands?

I wonder if there is more information about Shirley Soderstrom and her work in the Disney modeling department. It is my understanding she worked on Snow White, Pinocchio, Fantasia and Bambi making maquettes.
It helped me a lot with the anmation drawing, thank you.

Love all your maquettes, they are so beautiful, from Raja to Koda and Kenai, and of course that amazing Mother Bear.
And Yao!! He is one of My favorite characters.
Sculpture is one of My favorite things, and looking at some of My favorite characters and how they were used to draw and animate our beloved movies is so special.
I took sculpture in art school (which sadly couldnt finish) and then as a workshop, and I think I was always a goal to create for animation too
Now I am really inspired to continue studying and creating by myself...just to start: My grizzly bear I was doing when the workshop ended.
Of course compared to mother bear is tiny and looks it has never eaten hehe

Thank you so much for sharing these treasures with us. I wish I were a little mouse to see how the 2D movies was made, and the use of these maquettes. I remember the maquette of the Beast displayed in the attraction Art of Animation at Disneyland Paris, it was so impressive, all in movement (kinda like the one of Koda's mum *o*). I would love an exhibition around the world displaying all the maquettes that were made ^^

Raja the tiger from "Aladdin" looks almost exactly like Shere Khan from the 1967 animated Disney film "The Jungle Book". Did Aaron use that character as a model for Raja?🤔

hey Arron, i've been watching your content for a while now and i'm intrested in what animations you find cool that are pretty obscure. and if your down for a foreign watch id suggest 'dead leaves' by studio trigger, its pretty old so the quality not very good, and the humours real raunchy but its one of the best animated piece's ive seen, though im pretty sure its the polar opposite of your style anyway cool maquettes

I found absolutely ZERO information about Roon Bennecke online, even though Aaron Blaise says he's one of the best animators world wide. also Roon Bennecke is not mentioned in the animator team that worked on Brother bears... ???
