I remember saving and reloading during my first saves, especially when doing contract negotiations, to better understand the limits of what you can push when negotiating without risking losing players I valued. Thankfully I was in preseason so it didn't alter game results except of a friendly.

I've been playing FM in one incarnation or another for over 25 years and I've played it in every way possible from save and reloading to as close to real life as possible but these days I just play a save however I'm feeling whether that's with an editor a "real life" save and everything in between I just think people should play it however they enjoy it's a game at the end of the day.
As I'm seeing some confessions in the comments, here's mine: I typically play with no reloads, however, one save, I did reload, once... not because of a loss, we won... but one of my strikers, that I had just bought, was injured for 10 months in their first match. Honestly it gets so frustrating sometimes; I’m managing Leicester and one season I was on a 12 game losing streak. I have the editor, so I know my worst starting player had 145 CA. I should’ve been at the very least contending for a Europa League place and instead I was in a relegation battle wallowing in 17th. It was so infuriating as I didn’t understand what I was doing wrong, especially considering recently promoted teams with like a team average of 130 CA were mid table. I used a 4-2-3-1 that played to my team strengths, my pep talks were always well received by like 70% of the squad, and my team meetings always boosted morale. Then I’d concede in the first 5 minutes of the game and that was it. Just loss after loss. Made literally 0 sense to me. I got so fed up I used the editor to make their entire first team have no fitness so they were forced to play their reserves. I was legit so mad and done I didn’t even want to play any more. Too much to handle, so I reverted and ended up getting hired at Blackburn and guiding them to promotion in my first season. Worth it!
So long as you don't get into a bad cycle of save and reload, you're no longer able to enjoy yourself because of the pressure to win and the false or inflated expectations from the club. I reloaded the Italian cup final before, my star striker was injured and lost 2-0 to Lazio [2002 Lazio ;) ] The reload game was legendary, got behind 4-0 and was ready to rage quit when my striker woke up. Won 7-5 with a double hattrick and took the cup back home to Pro Vercelli. Man do I miss the old serie A
I learnt to play through save scumming, although I've not played the PC version for many years now... What you do behind closed doors is up to you... As Tom said, don't save and reload then go brag on Social Media that your the best thing since Pep went to City...it's that simple... Do what's right for you, experiment and see what works for you
Just play the game the way you like to play it, personally I reload if I lose an important game where xGoals are like 3.54 vs 0.12 and I lose, in real life this is almost impossible but in FM it seems to happen fairly often, because the game tries to keep you from winning artificially at times if you're on a streak. I also reload if I lose 2 or more players in the same match with a serious injury. It just isn't fun when RNG is 100% against you.
I do it for serious board interactions early in a save. Asking for an available/affordable and dearly needed training improvement can get you fired if you push too hard at the wrong time. I find that absurd (I'm not talking about leaking to the press I'm more talking about using the "I can't go on then etc" choice and then getting sacked) in certain situations (such as getting the club promoted from National North to League One in 5 years etc)
Don't be scared to abandon a save and start again. Maybe you regret some transfers, maybe you've antagonised players, maybe you're riddled with injuries. Nothing wrong with starting again. If I had £1 for each new save game, since the game first released, I'd be the richest person on the planet 😀
i 3 times already creating new save, but it kinda bored if i make new again since i will do same transfer on liverpool. and i cant choose another club i just love liverpool
I save and reload when trying to loan players out. I simply don't know how much money am I supposed to ask, so I just reload if I get no loan offers. I do that with contract negotiations too sometimes. I just hate not getting a good deal, I use FM for learning negotiation too
Dunno why but in all of my FM22 and FM23 save games, the first year at a club is always the best though my team overall is getting better and better ... then I switch to another club and I'm on top of the table again; sometimes FM just wants to scam you :D
I still do save and reload but not always because I can take loses. This FM takes me 3 seasons in order to win the league. I only do it when - I got beaten by bs goal that my defenders who were in good form suddenly do not know how to defend or my world-class keeper suddenly became 5.4. - Before team meeting or individual interactions. Trust me, you makes the morale plummet with wrong interaction, your team from world class became Vanarama class. Keep it to minimum. I watch some of my friend who do save and reload because of injuries but I never do that (it opens up the room for other players to grow, why would you). Still with minimum save and reload, it takes me 6 seasons in order to win the UCL with my Gladbach saves.
The biggest argument at saving and reloading being just okay is that... FM is a single-player game. Who are you hurting from just finding the outcome spiteful? Same with downloading proven tactics or training schedules, or picking a powerful team or using a pre-made shortlist to find wonderkids...
Tom, I follow you regularly since last year but I myself don't play FM. It's too much of a learning curve for me. I have only 2 days off in the week and that too isn't as stress free. I tried to learn FM on 3 separate occasions, during that period I found your channel. Glad I did. But I feel like I am not gonna give up on FM just yet. Cause I had problems with Minecraft and Skyrim as well at first but now I know them like back of my hand. So, what advice would you give me? Any FM players what advice will you guys give me to get back into FM? I have FM 20 when it was given for free. I tried learning it but I just can't keep the feeling of being overwhelmed away.
Easiest way to get into the game is by using premade tactics and focusing on just scouting/signing players, picking the team and some training but even this can all go to your assistant manager. Over time gradually give yourself more responsibilities and you get more and more comfortable with various aspects of the game
Big thing, echoing Zealand, is to pick up a strong team in a not so strong league (like Dinamo Zagreb in Croatia or Legia Warsaw in Poland) - that gives you plenty of chances to experiment and make mistakes in domestic competitions (and winning most of the matches, keeping you motivated) and still have a chance to play harder opponents in European competitions. Finding a club with sugar daddy can also be a way to go, you don't really have to worry about the financial side of running a club and can focus on finding right players for your tactics (in big leagues you have Newcastle, Man City, PSG, AS Monaco, Hertha BSC, if you want to go through the national ladder first I'd recommend Lusitania Lourosa down in Portuguese 3/4 tier). And then again, coming back to what Tom was talking about, make saves periodically and if you make a mistake / go on a losing streak, just reload :)) at the end of the day, it's not really cheating if you play a single player game And most importantly, just enjoy yourself while playing! Don't try looking online for the "meta most broken tactics" just for the sake of winning, I have created and polished a 4-2-3-1 tactic few years ago, and still use it today as a base for playing - there's nothing wrong with it :D
I'd say, read about which tactics are good or how to build one. Take a team when you are starting, I like to start as a super experienced player, kinda like lampard or xavi Alonso, but for total starter it probably is more fun to take away over a top club as it gives you more ways to experiment and get players. Play god, tweak and lose. And try to be chill when losing. I hate it but to enjoy the game you gotta embrace it. I used to be super competitive and pissed, but then reloading every game for a perfect streak makes no sense really. About reloading and learning to embrace losing I forced myself to make runs of 3-5 games and then decide to reload or not. For 2nd run it might actually be more fun to take top league mid tier team. Cause if you're real or city you have like 4 competitions all expected to win. You can buy anything but it's pressure and squad juggling. If you take mid table team you have finances to run scouting and manage team, while it's ok not to W half of games cause 10th place is ok. And you focus on league. Way less pressure and fixture congestion. It paradoxically can be more rewarding and lower entry bar.
There's a lot more pleasure in not doing that when you actually win, but I must admit I have done it innumerable times (on all FM's, I have this one but haven't even touched it yet). I feel as if it's a product of the randomness of the game.
God forbid people enjoy playing FM the way they want! XD (okay, just to be clear, I'm being sarcastic lol) Also I swear I just got reverse FM'd. I beat Chelsea 1-0, which doesn't sound that weird, except I finished the game with *8 men*
I save and relead when a shit team wins against us when I sim and then I play normally but its just out of lazyness in the first place, i still accept losses if unsymmed
I kind of enjoy "loosing unfairly" sometimes i like to feel like an actual manager For example i saved a team from relegation and after a couple of seasons i took them to the playoffs to reach europa league, we won vs marseille with all the odds against us and then won vs montpelier 3-0 on the first match but on the second match my star player who was on the team for like 10 years got a red card on the 7th minute and they won 4-1, my players just gave up I got so mad i sold him without caring if i could get a replacement, i still get angry thinking about him
Hi @tomfm and comunity! I have a problem with my ultimate save in FM23. It's my 4th season and for some reason suddenly my continue bottom stop to work when i've to face a match. All the Other funtions work and I can go to hollidays but i can not play matches. Anybody knows a solution for that? Thank you a lot!
I like Tom, but I absolutely hate pish comments like he made. I know it was said as a joke but it really is disrespectful. And unlucky supporting Abeerdeen just now, mate. At least you got rid of Goodwin 😉
Yeah that was really uncalled for. I’m glad he picked County and not Killie but I’d put money on it that he’s never actually watched County play. I’d back them against Lincoln
scum saving is called scum saving for a reason. scum savers be aware you will not do well online with friends as you never learn how to play the game. never scum save learn the game inside out its easy. losing is apart of fm and life in fact . remember losing means your team needs improvement so don't be mad about it just have an open mind and know you need improvement
If you get into a habit of saving and reloading, as soon as you hit a roadblock you will either save scum or quit. The best way to enjoy FM is to embrace the fact that you will NOT win every game and things will go against you unfairly sometimes, just like irl. I do understand reasons for save scumming such as bs goals (we see them more than ever in FM23) , injuries etc but just flow with it, things will work themselves out eventually and it will be alot more rewarding when it all comes together. Also with pre season, just play teams who are weaker to make sure you get the W and give your first team players as much minutes as possible to max out team cohesion and stick with the formation you are going to use in the regular season. Training really doesn't have the massive impact on your players as you'd initially think. Leaving it to your assistant if you aren't bothered is perfectly fine, as long as you're training your players in some capacity they will stay fit and improve.
I have had matches where I was up 2-1 in the 80th minute and my team scores and it doesn't count not because of offsides it just bugs and I have had the reverse for the cpu where they supossedly score but the game never bothers to show it. The latter I can live with, the former getting f'ed out of a goal and then getting Fm'ed is a bit much for me.
This isn't what the save scumming rule is about. It's for issues like a player constantly saving before a game, then reloading again and again and again and again until you get the result you want. You don't really learn FM this way.
Who cares if they learn or don't? There are people who know FM but do save and reload. If you wanna learn then do it and of others just wanna have a good time let them. Life is stressful enough for people to just mad about a game meant to have fun. Not everyone takes it as seriously as you.
Lol this is couldn’t be further from the truth… save and reload is literally the best way to learn because you get to try different tactics against the exact same team and see what works best. Why are you even so concerned with what other people do in a single player game?
Sorry man saving and reloading is just bullshit defeats the purpose of achievements in the game. However saying this due to bugs in game those are the only times that the save and reload is allowable.
Ya had me until ya talked nonsense about Ross County. Hear, i know you’re probably trying to be comedic but its this kinda nonsense I hear English folk spout on a daily basis. Genuinely thought you were better than this. Part from that, decent video.
i never save and reload anymore, the most i go in the way of 'cheating' is i use the in-game editor to bypass small things like when i have the funding + reputation to sign a wonder kid, but they refuse to move because they want to 'continue their development' at some estonian 3rd division club. much more rewarding and doesn't feel like cheating either because if anything it makes the game more accurate to real life
@@epmcgee not really. i only bypass stuff that isn't realistic. do you really think a 17 year old from estonia is going to turn down arsenal, who in my save just won the CL, bc they 'want to continue to develop at their current club'? I am still paying the same amount i would if the game would just do that automatically. i don't see how that possibly compares to literally match fixing your results during the season, which isn't fun or realistic at all
I disagree. I lose the fun of the game pretty quickly when i reload every time i feel unfairly treated by the game (because football is unfair irl as well). But people REALLY have a way to big twist in their panties that people they dont know play a singleplayer in a way they dont like. I gotta be honest, i have worse problems. I couldnt care less. You can play with databanks, talent lists, the editor blah blah blah. Thats what these things are for and why its so easy to implement them. But when people just like to do alot of transfers and want to win 100 out of 100 games then... Nice. They have fun with a game they paid good money for.

As Tom said, don't save and reload then go brag on Social Media that your the best thing since Pep went to City...it's that simple...
Do what's right for you, experiment and see what works for you
I save and reload when bullshit happens such as 3 conceding penalties in a game
Just play the game the way you like to play it, personally I reload if I lose an important game where xGoals are like 3.54 vs 0.12 and I lose, in real life this is almost impossible but in FM it seems to happen fairly often, because the game tries to keep you from winning artificially at times if you're on a streak. I also reload if I lose 2 or more players in the same match with a serious injury. It just isn't fun when RNG is 100% against you.
I usually reload to manipulate other teams' match results xd if I don't want them to be relegated or so
I like this. The most thorough reasoning for save + reload I've ever heard.
Best time to save and reload is for player interactions, they suck, they just do.
I scummed saved when I lost to Liverpool 10-1 to lose 2-0
I always save my saves whenever i go to a new club, so i can reload it whenever the new job isn't working out well.
Preseason + serious injury = save and reload.
That transition into the #ad was toooo smooth
I only do it when
- I got beaten by bs goal that my defenders who were in good form suddenly do not know how to defend or my world-class keeper suddenly became 5.4.
I save and reload only during pre-season. This is to ensure my main players do not get injured before the season starts.
And then again, coming back to what Tom was talking about, make saves periodically and if you make a mistake / go on a losing streak, just reload :)) at the end of the day, it's not really cheating if you play a single player game
And most importantly, just enjoy yourself while playing!
I do save and reload for contract negotiations. I know that there's an option to appologise to agents now, but still.
There's a lot more pleasure in not doing that when you actually win, but I must admit I have done it innumerable times (on all FM's, I have this one but haven't even touched it yet). I feel as if it's a product of the randomness of the game.
I allow myself one save scum a season, that I normally use when I lose a quarter or semi final, but I still feel bad about it
God forbid people enjoy playing FM the way they want! XD (okay, just to be clear, I'm being sarcastic lol)
Also I swear I just got reverse FM'd. I beat Chelsea 1-0, which doesn't sound that weird, except I finished the game with *8 men*
I save and relead when a shit team wins against us when I sim and then I play normally but its just out of lazyness in the first place, i still accept losses if unsymmed
The only time I reload is when we get a serious injury during pre-season. Other than that, I don't bother.
Did Tom just make the story of finding his wife save scumming Canon?
I kind of enjoy "loosing unfairly" sometimes i like to feel like an actual manager
For example i saved a team from relegation and after a couple of seasons i took them to the playoffs to reach europa league, we won vs marseille with all the odds against us and then won vs montpelier 3-0 on the first match but on the second match my star player who was on the team for like 10 years got a red card on the 7th minute and they won 4-1, my players just gave up
I got so mad i sold him without caring if i could get a replacement, i still get angry thinking about him
I reload when my signed for 35M player gets a 6 months injury. Sure that can happen in real life (wolves and kaladzjic) but I don't want that
Hi @tomfm and comunity! I have a problem with my ultimate save in FM23. It's my 4th season and for some reason suddenly my continue bottom stop to work when i've to face a match. All the Other funtions work and I can go to hollidays but i can not play matches. Anybody knows a solution for that? Thank you a lot!
Pre season is fine but if your losing in the actual season then let it play
well said
Good luck to your U 12's against Ross County, I'm an Aberdeen supporter and I'd be delighted if we could beat them !
I like Tom, but I absolutely hate pish comments like he made. I know it was said as a joke but it really is disrespectful.
And unlucky supporting Abeerdeen just now, mate. At least you got rid of Goodwin 😉
@@johnmacdonald3942 Yeah he's always making wee digs at Scottish football. Disappointing too as he supporters a lower league team
Not true if you just safe-reload when you get fm’ed by bad teams when it makes no sense and accept defeats when you’re obviously not the better team
I liked you until you made that Ross County joke 😂
I am not proud but I do this in my personal saves I've stopped now
Ya had me until ya talked nonsense about Ross County. Hear, i know you’re probably trying to be comedic but its this kinda nonsense I hear English folk spout on a daily basis. Genuinely thought you were better than this.
Part from that, decent video.
i never save and reload anymore, the most i go in the way of 'cheating' is i use the in-game editor to bypass small things like when i have the funding + reputation to sign a wonder kid, but they refuse to move because they want to 'continue their development' at some estonian 3rd division club. much more rewarding and doesn't feel like cheating either because if anything it makes the game more accurate to real life
So, worse than save scumming.
