What to do when your Reef Tank Crashes!

  • We can learn from our mistakes, and we can take lessons from other places - like engineering - to better understand where we've gone wrong in our reef tanks. Stuff happens, pumps break, we loose power at just the wrong time - the result is the same... a near total tank crash. Dead coral. Maybe even dead fish.
    If your reef tank is suffering from a crash, it's really hard to see a path forward. Hang in there, and soon you'll be on the path to recovery. It's a chance to do better, to start again with the knowledge you've got now. Your reef tank can recover from its crash, even if you've lost most everything, just give it time. You can rebuild.
    We can take a moment to think about what went wrong leading up to the problem. What can we do differently? Maybe we should have done some more maintenance on our pumps. Maybe we didn't have a battery backup for one of our Vortechs to keep water moving in the case of a power outage. There's always something - so take a moment to think about your case and find what it is for you.
    Then, how can we make it so that cascade of problems can never happen again? More rigor in our tank equipment maintenance. A battery backup or generator. Maintenance on that generator. Figure out what would have actually changed the outcome, and that's what you should do going forward. If you stick with it, your reef tank won't crash again... at least not for that reason.

    So sorry for the losses. It is unreal how fast things can go downhill. Hopefully it will not be a total loss or you can start again and buy more corals. Best of luck

    First of all sorry for the corals you have lost, it’s really sad to see big colonies that took a long time to grow die but also thanks for sharing your mistakes so others could learn from it. Personally I always run heavy metal absorber and carbon in my reactor 24/7 and swap them out religiously just to prevent aging hardware from releasing too much undesired containments into the tank.

    It's a pain have this kind of experience especially in a solid tank like your! I hope you can turn for the best again as soon as possible! (I have a plumbing for 2 services on my return line but never used, now i think I'm going to remove some pumps and use it) 🤐🍕❤️

    I put 2 new 4 inch filter socks in my sump for the first now, after 6 to 10 days one of them was over flowing. I have seen filter socket of other people dark brown not over flowing mine was close to brown overflow

    Hey man love the vid, one thing I recommend you order and keep on hand for your external pump is a extra shaft seal, after a couple years the Teflon and ceramic seal will wear out and start leaking, I’m sure you know what it does but for other it keeps the valute/wetside sealed off.
    I mention this because I use to have a ext pump, a pentair ecosystems variable speed pump and it leaked and it took forever to for that seal in.
    But I’m all for the separate pump for the manifold, your doing it right!

      I hope that once I am able to reduce the sky high phosphorus and phosphate the dinos may lessen. If I can get them under control, then a lot of coral is not 100% dead yet, so maybe it could pull through.

    I watched again this episode, then it got me thinking, why suddenly coral died after you found out the crack inside vertex pump? it should be started long before finding out that leak and also after leaky pump was replaced then not all of sudden all coral died. What do you think @ReefMan ?

    Vertex skimmer pumps are made predominantly by Sicce. The one you said went bad looked like my Vertex Omega 150 pump that I changed recently. The replacement which was identical is the Sicce Syncra SK-400. Maybe you can find a what model replaces yours. Only the Needle wheel is made by Vertex.

    • @ReefMan

      Do you know what their return pumps might be? I really do like the Vertex V6 pump I've been using as a return, it pumps a lot of water, has never had even a tiny bit of corrosion or wear showing, and is basically silent. I _think_ maybe they were Askoll blocks with some custom volutes around the impellor?

    So sorry to see those giant beautiful coral die back. I hope it turns around quickly. For circulation I would recommend two dc submersible pumps and put the manifold on one or a small one on each. Not sure that would work with your plumbing though. Good luck!

      I sort of like what @ReefBuilders did in their big tank with two DC pumps on closed loops. Luckily I don't need to do THAT big of a reset though.

    So sorry to see the tank crashing. If you want to bounce manifold ideas off me hit me up. As for the po4, have you considered lanthanum chloride (diluted on a drip) to rebalance the po4.

      I’ve had bad results with LaCl. The super fine dust seems to really aggravate fish. I suspect this is just a phase the tank is going through more than a systemic issue.

    I am sorry that you have to experience a tank crash. But...I really doubt the problem is/was the corroding pump. Did you have PH swings? But it's definitely a water quality problem. My bet is the problem was extremly high or swinging PO4.

    • @ReefMan
      @ReefMan  3 роки тому

      For sure it was a pump in my sump that had it's motor exposed due to a cracked housing. I did an ICP test shortly after finding it and Copper along with other metals were elevated. At that time PO4 wasn't a factor. Now the metals are gone and PO4 is up.

    • @mihaia6026
      @mihaia6026 3 роки тому

      @@ReefMan Elevated does not mean tank crash. I had Cu elevated multiple times over what ICP test specified tge red line with no major issues. You need to have it orders of magnitude over the red line to experience this kind of crash. The problem is PO4 (either low PH triggered demineralization or some other problem).

    This is so rough to see. I said in a previous comment, and I will say it again, ORDER SOME BACTERIA. It is a difficult to maintain nutrients in a fish only system that runs low levels of copper to kill of fish disease in part because you are also killing off beneficial bacteria. My recommendation would be to order some Dr. Tim's one and only and some pods from Reef Nutrition.(which come in water that may have some beneficial bacteria) Just my two cents.
