- Can a cat be dead and alive at the same time? According to quantum mechanics, a cat inside a box can be in a superposition of being dead and alive. Yet, when observed, it seems to "collapse" into a single state.
In this video, Oxford PhD researcher Maria Violaris explains the Schrödinger's cat paradox using quantum computing, and shows you how to simulate the paradox yourself by coding quantum circuits with Qiskit.

Best possible explanation. You just nailed it, Maria!
Excellent explanation of Schrodinger's cat, and I like how you link it to quantum computing.
Amazing, Maria. You are a great teacher! Keep up with new videos. I would recommend your podcasts!
Beautiful explanation from a beautiful speaker and use of Qiskit to simulate the Cat in the box!
finally i got after waiting such informative video, i am a regular follower of qiskit thank you qiskit.
Great clarity, thank you!
Great work! Keep up the excellent content.
Great videos! Love them.
Very Nice explanation!! I love it
Maria you're a star! Love the video x
splendid Mary, splendid
Nice video! The introduction of the observer doesn't add anything though, you always need the environment qubits to bring in decoherence.
Thanks! The environment is needed in order to explain why we don’t see evidence of macroscopic superpositions being reversed in everyday life. But just the observer is needed to explain why an observer of Schrödinger’s cat sees only a single outcome. So the observer and the environment are needed to resolve different aspects of the “paradox” :)
Sorry, I know the books are blurred-out on-purpose, but I'm distracted by the bookshelf anyway. I recognize the Dover QFT book, but the book I really want to know the title of is the one with the hat on the cover. Yeah, I can't resist examining peoples' bookshelves in their videos...
Anyhow, great presentation. I think it's the first time I've seen a discussion of the ambiguities of measurement in a Qiskit context.
What is your plan after phd mam? What is the physics academics scope in your country?
What is a tensor product?
It's crazy how Schrödinger came up with the thought experiment to show how silly the notion was and people now use it as a teaching tool for quantum mechanics.
That schrodingher chap must of hated cats!
Could you be mah tutor?😢
That equation won’t work on the moon…
