Galloway plays a clever self-deception game by admitting how terrible the things he believes in are (including his own greed), while doing and supporting them. It makes him seem like a good guy, when he really isn't. He's so good at it, he even fools himself.

If young people need cheap clothes, is resale/ used/ making your own and - pressuring big brands to use more sustainable practices not better?

Not sure about the clothing. I tend to go on the third party resale and thrifting. I tried some of the Chinese apps like Temu for things that American resalers market up too much. I bought a few things like clothes hangers or phone case. I don't feel like paying $20-30 for case when I can just pick up a simple phone case for $5. Even some of the products Amazon sells are from China.

Shein allows young people with uncertain outcomes to spend money on clothes that are fast, fun and false economy.
This is about ROI, so it’s surprising considering how well Galloway advocates for young people.
Businesses like Shein promote the ever-increasing narrative that you can have cheap, pretty dresses, but you’ll never own a home, so why not get that adorable tank top as well?
Scott should be made to wear Shein exclusively, for a month 😂
Love this podcast and the Porf. G show is a cut above the rest ❤

I think it's the lipstick index. The 'lipstick index' says people buy more makeup when times get tough. Even if it's the little things, I want to feel pretty when the world makes it rough for me: low income, tough job market, ect.

Knowledge, experience, investigative experience, history in the tech industry….plus, she’s just a very smart woman, augmented by a considerable dose of common sense. Need more?

Well I donno, I ordered a pair of shoes from Temu on Sunday, here it is on Monday and Amazon delivered them,. I was shocked and had to check what I did. Now that is cool. I like what is happening. Sure I've ordered some things that turned out as junk but this is a quality pair of shoes with all good reviews no matter where the sale was made. As far as I'm concered another smart move by Amazon. People are simply fed up with the high prices here for junk made there. Let's face it, everything is coming from China no matter what store you buy in these days.

Were already in a max delta curve with the consumption of disposal clothes. Scott thinks it sounds like a good idea?? I was a teen in 1980s and I was poor. Despite all that, I matter to clothe myself half respectively and yes, find a decent partner. Encouraging mass consumption on the cheap does the opposite of building resilience and fostering creativity. It's also devastating for the environment. The world does not need more oil based plastic garbage.

A truly cynical take from Scott. Very disappointed in his whataboutism; it will not age well. It’s shocking he of all people would take this kind of position given his concerns about the wealth gap and shrinking financial opportunities for young people yet has no problem taking their money on cheap thrills.

If shipping is still 9-11 days then I may as well condition to order from temu & shein. At least sometimes I get a discount or free item and price adjustment.

The problem with on demand cheap fashion is the shitty materials/quality which will not last long. Henceforth, these crappy, but stylish clothes will end up in the landfill much quicker than quality clothes from upscale brands. Additionally, you can cosign quality merchandise because there is a demand for them. Therefore, quality, more expensive clothes are better for the environment in the long run. I have a few pairs of Theory slacks that are over a decade old and they still hold their qualities much better than the craps that Shein sells.

@@tomtran614 it’s crazy when we are supposedly in a climate crisis, but this IPO contributes to landfills in an egregious way. It is the generation he is trying to protect, who will pay. It makes zero sense.
You don’t have to be a tree-hugging environmentalist to recognize the cognitive dissonance.

Maybe it might depend on how things are made. Uniqlo isn't known for expensive clothing but I think I have a pair of Uniqlo selvedge jeans that are probably more than 10 years old. Not sure if the quality changed.

    • @tomtran614

@@peterparker2068 Uniqlo is an established brand. I'm referring to the low quality crap that Shein and Temu sell.

Bingo! As an importer of apparel let me say this with confidence: the Chinese doesn't care about the quality at all. It takes a lot of arguments and a dedicated on-site inspection team to make sure they deliver the quality we asked for. Without it, all you do is just creating more trash faster.
