    when I saw the title and thumbnail, I thought it was talking about the end of the episode when silky fades away and it just rips away from that tragic, heart wrenching moment over to turbo granny with the blow-dryer 😭

    I think Gintama is really a great example, also being my favorite anime, it's clear that one of the many things that characterizes the series is that a lot of serious arcs begins with the typical comedy, and in the next episode turns into something completely different

    'Mulan'. It's not anime, but it is animation, and the song 'I´ll make a man out of you' cutting to a pillaged village is the example that first comes to mind.

      Americans say animation is not anime, anime literally means anime 💀, any animation is anime.

      @@ChristainRapter Oh please I think that's just rose-tinted glasses speaking. I've seen both and love both, I think their whiplashes are just as great as each other. One's not more master class or worse than the other, they're just different imo.

      @@あやとり-k6s Americans try to assign unique terminology cuz they either don’t respect western animation or cuz they want to keep Japanese animation as exotic in some way.

    Gintama is legit the most perfect example of this😭 It can use running gags and give it a sad backstory

    I'll give a very good example of amazingly done tonal whiplash here. The Kabukichou Four Heavenly Kings arc in Gintama establishes the relationship between Otose and Gintoki by further fleshing out their backstory, as well as introducing Jirocho and we learn about Tatsugoro, and everything. It solidifies Gintoki and Otose's bond like a son and mother, even if they're not blood related.
    Fast forward some 30 episodes and then the Scandal Arc opens up with the premise that Gintoki got black out drunk and accidentally ended up sleeping with Otose. And that creates a totally different kind of comedy never seen in anime. Even though us the audience know there's no way they actually slept together, it's still hilarious when you look back on the previous arcs with this idea. It makes you think "Tatsugoro is rolling in his grave. Jirocho will end Gintoki if he finds out"
    That right there is good tonal whiplash in a completely different way that no other anime (or any other piece of media for that matter) see explore like this

    One of the most popular bad, "over the top"" whiplash I immediately thought of is bad bathos, specifically bad lampshading. Its basically that moment in a Marvel movie where the villain brings out megazords and nukes the shit out of a city or some other display of evil and power and one of the cast just goes "Damn" or "that was crazy" or "Did you see that??" Its bad because the two clashing scenes destructively interfere with each other, the previous scene where something crazy happens is trivialized or made fun of by the next scene, which makes the next scene look like an ass too. Good whiplash makes the two very tonally different scenes constructively interfere and contrast with each other and elevates both scenes, with the former scene basically being a fake-out, a misdirect, whereas the latter scene making you retrospectively enjoy the former scene even more, being an unexpected twist, a welcome surprise, instead of the party pooper that it was in the bad whiplash.

    Princess Tutu comes to mind, very cute and girly, gets pretty dark and meta halfway through. Excellent ending too for the most part (I just have one nitpick which isn't a failing of the story itself, I just really would've liked to see my ship sail at the end).
    I think Jojo and Mob Pycho do a good job balancing comedy and their darker/more serious moments too.

    Wasnt Acrobat silky the one who killed Aira? I was more confused at the aftermath than anything because she is the one saying she will eat Aira so of course she's gonna die, so why the sudden change of heart?

      Were you under the impression that Silky was being rational before this ?! 😉
      You have to consider that she was obsessed over Aira calling her "Mommy" for nearly a decade by this point, and she wasn't exactly rational in the beginning anyway, having forgotten her own daughter and only recalling her loss when Aira mistook her for her Mom (which prompt the birth of her obsession and her transformation into a youkai). To be rejected after all this time clearly infuriates her and in this state she can only envision one alternative : absorbing Aira and becoming one with her (plus she's "punishing" her "bad daughter").
      She's not even considering the consequence for Aira at this point and being rejected by Momo and put on fire don't improve her rationality.
      It's only when she gets blown away by Okarun that she regains a semblance of sanity and hearing that her "daughter" that she cherishes over everything is dead is the impetus to surpass her impulses and bring about her sacrifice. She even acknowledge that she's not in her right mind and she can't be relied upon not to hurt Aira.

    I'm probably in the minority here, but these shifts in tone from comedy to action/drama were what made me stop watching Gintama during Silver Soul. You mention early in the video with Zenitsu about how hard it is to take a joke character seriously when they finally decide to do something cool - that is exactly how I felt during Katsura and Sakamoto's fight.
    To me, Gintama was a comedy anime first and foremost, and this is where it excelled at. The fights were never as good as those in other action shows and the plot was pretty bad. Having some plot stuff happen here and there was fine, but in the later seasons it became mostly about the plot and the fights, and it made the show hard to watch for me. And I mean literally. I tried watchig the first few episodes of Silver Soul 2 or 3 times, but couldn't bring myself to finish them, so I ended up giving up on the show, which is sad, because I'd been watching Gintama for almost 10 years at that point.

    • @o0ugi860
      @o0ugi860 Місяць тому +1

      Definitely in the minority. For most of us the serious moments hit much marder than other shows precisely because of the comedic moments. Thinking gintama is comedy first is ur issue tbh. It's both and it works incredibly well. I disagree about the fights too, gintoki vs takasugi alone is leagues better than alot of pure action shows in terms of animation, choreography, emotional stakes and plot relevance. I think you ruined it for urself when u decided in ur head that gintama is almost exclusively a comedy. The fact you saw katsura as a joke character in and of itself is absurd. Sakamoto is fair, definitely not katsura. Frankly u ruined it for urself with ur own lopsided expectations

    • @lisastfield453
      @lisastfield453 Місяць тому

      Sorry, I absolutely disagree as well about the fights, especially with Gintoki vs Takasugi. It is a type of fights that you don't just see all the action, but the emotional meaning behind it. Such a pure raw emotions, and combine it with concise yet powerful lines, it's phenomenal. You don't see that often in a lot of anime. As for the story, it's giving us the viewers, the fight that we've been waiting for since the first big arc, Benizakura. And give us a big twist in the story.
