@@FanTheDeck I think the most important thing here is the fact that Proton effectively translates DirectX to Vulkan as one of its largest components, and that several modern ARM chipsets support Vulkan as an API natively, so instead of having to translate an instruction set to an entirely different instruction set it may be a simple case of translating a CALL to a native instruction set EQUIVALENT, with a lot less overhead.

Waydroid is a Linux app to make ARM games playable natively on Linux (on x86-64 processors) via libhoudini (better for Intel) or libndk (better for AMD) translation layers, not the other way around. And I'm not entirely sure ARM processors are capable enough to run x86-64 games via translation layer, with exceptions of a few indie games. To me it looks more like Steam wants the Steam Deck to natively support ARM games, which would allow them to woo mobile games and gamers away from Play Store, and into the Steam ecosystem. *I might be wrong, but that makes more sense to me.

I fear that Rockstar's move is going to set a precedent for other big companies to snub the Valve and Steam Deck. If a big company like Rockstar can do that, what's to stop other companies, big or small, from doing that. There were already hostilities toward the Steam Deck from many companies, and Rockstar is like Archduke Ferdinand getting shot to kick off a war.

I still play my OG Steam Deck quite a bit, but the hardware on the newer Ally X is noticeable snappier. Steam Deck 2 will probably obliterate the competition, but for now they’re close.
The Rog Ally X isn't slightly better performing, it's massively better in terms of performance. AAA Games that are unplayable on Steam Deck due to lack of performance, play well on the Rog Ally X. I left the Steam Deck for this very reason.

Sony are only "remastering" these games for consoles, but their added benefit is that they get to remove the originals on PC just so they can outright enforce PSN across the board on Steam/EGS. They basically want to capture and lockdown the Steam market and pocket it into their ecosystem, none of which we asked for. This is why I hate when publishers come crawling to Steam, because they only care about stealing from Steam's userbase, rather than selling to Steam users and playing nice. Instead it's DRM/account sign-up/Data collection enforcements, coupled with higher prices, and all of that is enough to put me off buying from any publisher that comes to Steam and expects me to put up with all that uneeded crap. Just sell me the game at a decent price, no data collection, no extra hoops to jump through. let me boot up the god damn game so I can play it without obstructions/intrusions.

That screenshot also shows something that reads as waydroid, which is a way to run android applications in a linux environment. That needs at least a special kernel module. I really like to be able to run android applications on Linux. Maybe that would be a way to view bimx files on the steam deck.
Yes, it's a little complicated to explain entirely in a video but the point is they're using multiple different compatibility tools for different purposes and all of them are to beef up Linux compatibility: Waydroid -> Makes it possible to play AndroidARM games on LinuxARM Proton -> Makes it possible to play Win-x86 games on Linux-x86 ProtonARM -> Makes it possible to play WinARM and Win-x86 games on LinuxARM And it gets deeper than that because Proton is a fork of WINE and ProtonARM seems to be leveraging FEX. WINE itself has updates that address WindowsARM to LinuxARM compatibility. We haven't seen any source code for ProtonARM so could it be a fork of like Box86/Box64 or something? And what about making games playable on AndroidARM? Are they going to do that too? Lots of questions still left to answer.
getting a steamdeck in australia was already possible, it was just a bit expensive due to import fees and you had to be careful which one you got since our electrical system is 240 volts which the US charger wont be able to handle
If Proton (ARM) releases in a competent and feature-full state, that would mean major strides being made in battery life for future ARM iterations of devices like the Steam Deck, which would be huge. Currently getting anywhere from as little as 30 minutes to as much as 8 hours of on-screen-time on the Deck, depending on game/workload, is rough. Switching to ARM, even with the same battery capacity, could see those numbers change to anywhere from 90 minutes at minimum (though that's a generous minimum, assuming other hardware stays mostly the same) to as high up as about 14 hours with lite gaming. The future looks good for handheld gaming, and I'm here for it. I'm not even upset in the least about being a "beta tester" for Deck V1; it's been a wild and exciting ride, and I have loved every second of using my Deck.
I have confidence Valve will actually give refunds to anyone who bought GTAV just to play it on Steam Deck. To those people, the game is now broken, and Rockstar is responsible for that. I doubt you'll get a refund if you've had the game for several years, but if you got it after you purchased a Steam Deck, there is a decent chance Valve will take your side.

Instead of making these horrible new IPS, they should have really rebooted this franchise.
I think you're under estimating Valve's relations. They have a footing in hardware, they have for a long time and they have their own manufacturing capacity. I wouldn't be surprised that they do have relations with chip makers.

Proton on ARM is crazy. I don't think it's going to be a phone, but maybe a more efficient future device. But I suppose the cheap (retro)handheld space like Retroid and Ambernic will gobble that up and hopefully succeed where ASUS and others failed. Also, the Hololive RP server was hilarious.

Every tech hipster loves to hype up arm, and then you remember that the moment you need to run compatibility layer for x86 programs all of the so called advantages get down the drain. Great video new sub from me Im thinking that proton on arm is way get steam on to android phones ditch hardware and focus on software or let partners like samsung build a steamdeck.
I think it's main target is not VR but MacOS. Not sure if you are aware but there are 3 big groups working in this. Primarily it is the Wine community where Proton is based from. Second is Proton itself that's coming from Valve. And lastly, Crossover from the Codeweaver group that's primarily working on it on ARM support. But since it is opensource we should be expecting ports from it soon. Mainly from the mobile phone and VR also. Android today can already play PC x86 games thru emulators. AFAIK I can already see a playable Fallout 4. This should give me reason to buy foldable devices soon 😆
2:56 I think what kicked off low price point was a Switch. There is no point to get out a gaming handheld that will 2-times more expensive than Switch. That is probably why middle class Steam Deck is for 512€ and low memory version is for 416€.
Valve can offer a lower price because they don't have to pay Microsoft for licencing Windows. A Windows licence usually adds $100 to the cost of the device.
Brother you can’t imagine what hoops I had to go to get the steamdeck in Australia for a non crazy price. I just hope this means they don’t hate us anymore 😂
There is definitely a market for handhelds, PC handleds are relatively "new" (Nvidia started it, gpd and ayaneo were keeping it alive, steam brought it to its golden age) but none of these PC/laptop manufactures will ever do console let alone steamdeck, psp, or switch numbers because they all have one thing in common, they all sell at a major loss because they have exclusive/games and/or a digital store they take a cut off all game sells (like apple and Google with apps). Valve can afford to take a loss cause they'll make it back on the 30% Percent they make back on all game sales on their store front, and guess who just bought some games, a new steam deck owner or really any PC handheld owner, it's why steam they have so many sales. People buy more when their are deals vs none. Acer, Asus, Lenovo have to sell these devices and laptop prices or they won't make any money back, their income is purely from the hardware sale not games or software sales. I hope with all these new handheld it doesn't set the precedent for more store fronts.
I think proton on arm is prepare for a potential arm steam deck. Could be a customized chip from Qualcomm. Lets say valve get Qualcomm to replace the npu on snapdragon x plus/elite to more gpu cores. With a great translation layer like proton, it could be best of both worlds. Battery life + Performance.
On android we alrdy have a few apps that lets you run pc games thru wine like winlator and mobox and they can run games like GTA V, Fallout 4 at full speed, so full steam support for arm devices like android is definetly possible. So far the biggest problem with them is they heat up the device quickly because can't take full advantage of the system. Modern high end androids in theory alrdy have more power than a i5 10th gen + gtx 1060 combo.
I'm hoping that Valve releases a Steam Deck Lite that is designed to be pocketable. It's okay if the performance is weaker and is only aimed at older games and indies. IMO it should also do away with the thumbsticks and maybe also the trackpads for the sake of pocketability. Perhaps that's what the ARM support is for.
I believe Valve is getting ready for ARM because except computers, almost everything runs on ARM and there'll be much more devices with ARM and ARM is getting better everyday with their GPUs. And no, this probably not for phones but more for ARM Linux and Windows devices on the future. Also, this can be a move to redirect the handheld market to move forward with ARM because they are also adding support for other devices like Ally to SteamOS and this might be it because ARM is simply better at power consumption than x86 in many cases so it's actually better for handheld devices to come with it.
Single Board Computers such as Raspberry Pis and Orange Pis use ARM so that is very good news for ARM and SBC users. Valve should really push hard for these SBCs.

Acer, giving up before they even started. As someone that worked on Acer laptops. Yeah I'm not surprised. I would describe their products as high margins for their build quality. I would expect them to have similar build qualities as a steam deck but at $1,000. Swear I'm not bitter 😂
That's the thing. If their competitive edge was we're going to be able to sell you a cheaper handheld than at least that's reasonable. But if you're telling me you're not gonna be innovative, you're not gonna be interesting, you're not gonna be particularly powerful, and you're not gonna win at price, then what is you doin bby?
I believe they have a domestic advantage here far as retail. But unsure if they do in the local territory far as supply goes. Id argue that advantage goes away completely in comparison to Asus's.
Most people don't realize how huge asus as a brand is.
I feel the steamdeck was a scape goat here to some degree.
Acer has the money to do larger orders for sure, but they've always been the stay slightly behind and rebrand/retool company historically. Typically their strength is pricing in comparison to the others.
A monitor example of this

Alienware aw3423dw
They rarely reinvent the wheel.
They just kind of come in and then have the perception that they're a semi-reliable brand that's a little cheaper than competitors. (Think great value) For the profit margin they would want, they likely couldn't justify ordering enough for a volume discount. Because it would have to be cheaper than the ally nore than likely to gain notoriety.
but they can't say that part, because than their failing to compete with asus.
Soooo they blame the newcomer

Steam lending a hand to Apple here. Proton on ARM means games you can play on Steam Deck you'll be able to play Apple Silicon Macs.
Lending a hand to themselves. Apple users being able to play means more customers, means more sales, means more money.
@@lost4468yt Nobody expects to play games on a Mac. Even Mac users know that. I'm a Mac user myself and I have a Windows desktop that only ever gets turned on when I want to play something AAA and every single gamer I know that are primarily Mac users are the same. There is a vanishingly tiny number of gamers that only play on Macs and they mostly play indies like Stardew or Rimworld.
What this will really do for Mac users is that they won't buy Steam Decks anymore since their Apple Silicon Macs would be able to play whatever the Steam Deck can.
@@Poo0fiIncredibly shortsighted… and yes of course the choice is between a mac and a steamdeck *facepalm*
@@FluffyAnvil *shrug* I replaced my Switch with a Steam Deck but if I can play those games on my Macbook instead, I wouldn't be bringing my Steam Deck at all considering how bulky it is.
Most people who carry Steam Decks are people who don't daily carry a laptop at all or daily carry a laptop that isn't meant to play games on. Sure, they're different form factors but convenience is very important for a portable and most people would prefer not to spend for a Steam Deck that they would also have to carry around if their daily carry computer would be able to play those games anyway.
@@Poo0fi except they do? Steam's own data shows significant numbers of players on Intel Macs still. Are you actually trying to suggest that Apple did this out of charity or something? They did it to sell more. They're a private company, you realise that their business model is to sell games and take a cut?
Regarding the pricing advantages for Valve, something else to remember is that Valve only sells direct to consumer and doesn't have to give a middle man like Best Buy or other retailer a cut of the sales price. That's a pretty substantial advantage.
I mean thats not helping valve it’s only hurting them. If they had them in stores they’d sell way more and still profit plenty. In fact id argue you’d get people wanting to buy products from your website more if you got them into the base in the first place
@@Tampafan33I don't think Valve has the capacity to meet the demands if they do that. They're not a hardware company, the deck is built on contract by a third party. The bigger the number, the bigger the risk producing something you can't really control.
Thats not an advantage considering entire countries cant get a steamdeck. Shelf space is a BIG thing for physical products. Ask your average person who doesnt game what "Steam" is and they'll give you a blank stare. Ask them what "Xbox" and "Playstation" are and they'll point to the respective boxes.
If Acer wants to say that Valve’s pricing for its handheld is too cheap, that’s on them. They already distribute hardware, so they could compete if they wanted to 🤷 It just comes off as greed…they’re more focused on making a big profit than caring about consumers unlike Steam/Valve
Yeah, it's greed, and not because Valve is earning from selling games from other companies and have glorified casino called Dota 2, TF2 and CS2.
try using launch settings like SteamDeck=1, You can force some games to think your computer is steam deck.
I know for sure this works on Linux, but does it work on Windows too?

@@nathanielmestas7755 No, you can't. Rockstar blocked Linux on their end. There's nothing you can do.
@@hueypautonoman i wouldn't think this would work on windows, as the deck is linux based and would be trying to use linux files to run it which wouldn't exist on windows.
i'm not at all an expert, so this is just a guess
@@thatoneannoyingtornadosire8755 Maybe. SteamDeck=1 is just an environment variable that tells steam to use whatever settings the game devs have enabled for the steam deck. I also don't know how environment variables work on Windows. I would guess they don't use the same syntax.

I saw Waydroid and I'm like, "what???"

I doubt it since Apple Silicon is kinda different and Valve has shown they don't want to support Apple
Fex works on Apple Silicone, and can run WINE, but not on OSX.
That screenshot also shows something that reads as waydroid, which is a way to run android applications in a linux environment. That needs at least a special kernel module.
I really like to be able to run android applications on Linux. Maybe that would be a way to view bimx files on the steam deck.
Yes, it's a little complicated to explain entirely in a video but the point is they're using multiple different compatibility tools for different purposes and all of them are to beef up Linux compatibility:
Waydroid -> Makes it possible to play AndroidARM games on LinuxARM
Proton -> Makes it possible to play Win-x86 games on Linux-x86
ProtonARM -> Makes it possible to play WinARM and Win-x86 games on LinuxARM
And it gets deeper than that because Proton is a fork of WINE and ProtonARM seems to be leveraging FEX.

Acer was like “we gotta charge yall for this handheld gaming system but i wouldn’t buy it “ 😂😂😂
Valve can offer a lower price because they don't have to pay Microsoft for licencing Windows. A Windows licence usually adds $100 to the cost of the device.

Whatever the next Steam Deck ends up being, I could see it being ARM based. The benefits in power consumption would be huge.
I'm hoping proton on Arm means that you will be able to play all of your older games in VR without a connected PC in Deckards standalone Mode.
Valve is doing great porting proton to ARM. It is most efficient way for handled consoles and the future.
I really hope we get more regions for the Deck, personally I've been waiting for a Latam release ever since the Deck came out lol
