  • An onboard shot of what it looks like to be a Romney Hythe and Dymchurch driver. This stretch was from New Romney to Dungeness for lunch. There is lots of single-track running, up to 20mph.
The locomotive for the day was No. 2 Northern Chief, and was very pleasant to drive, made lots of steam, and generally was quite forgiving.
Please note: I'm not a professional driver! And apologies for my coat covering the camera occasionally - the wind was blowing it across me unfortunately, and it was far too cold without a coat!
A special thank you goes to Alex, my driver trainer for the day, for his patience and putting up with my nonsense for half the day (you hear plenty of that), and our guard for the day, Alan, who certainly knows how to entertain and make people feel welcome.
If you read all this and liked it, check out Part 2, where I take the train from Hythe to New Romney at the end of the day.
Filmed on a GoPro Hero 10 Black.

You did really well! I had the opportunity to have a footplate ride in No.2 and got to drive it around the New Romney sidings - beautiful loco

Thank you! I'd love a footplate ride at some point to see how it handles a heavier load, this was only 4 empty coaches

To be honest, i thought quite the opposite, you looked like a natural engine driver to me.
    Thanks for sharing 👍

I remember riding this as a kid….just realised it was nearly sixty years ago.😮
