    You might consider putting your drying rack(s) on pulleys, so you don't have to risk a fall by climbing on anything to hang laundry. Just lower the rack, load it them raise it back up above head height. Worth a thought, anyway. Falls are my nemesis!

    Refrigerator out side, GUARD against rats, mice other varmints getting into the motor, wiring (works) I lost one before I encased the outside refridge works in 1/4" hardware cloth to keep the boogers out.

    Trust me when I tell you, I completely understand Mr. Hilder's frustration with some of the comments you can get on UA-cam. I've had my share too. I guess that's just the so called, "nature of the beast" when sharing on social networks. By the way, the fridge outside is an excellent idea.

      +Starry Hilder Love the drying racks. Sis I do like to have power but like you say we can cut off the power and still live. It's not fun at a; and when it's over 110 out but why do that when I do not have to. If i can do solaron less than 8-- bucks in weeks of in come. Than most peeps can do it as well. Like you guys the one thing we have that we do not need to have is Enex. We do not have cells phones cable TV andmy trick is a 1997 with 25k mills on it.
      We live happy for the most part. Lest few weeks been hard due to the lack of food but that is life. Thanks for all you do for us. Yall are a true blessing to us. Keep it up. God Bless.

    Mr. H, this may be my rant...You are absolutely right. If you work during the day and some nights or evenings you do not have time to be playing on internet and/or using a ton of electric. This applies to farmers as much as homesteaders. Both are hard working people as you and your little lady. I would not worry about the nastiness of some internet trolls who find it necessary to be mean, there are many negative people who are local and the You Tube trolls add to that is crazy. Keep positive! First I use You Tube as an informational and learning tool, not to put others down. Your channel and others who I follow help me in not making mistakes or learning an easy way to do things by watching and listening to people who live it. So you guys enjoy your beautiful homestead.     That was my first question. Just how much coffee did himself have this morning! LOL BUT, he is right.Oh, and speaking of snow shoveling. Something I discovered years ago back in Northern MN for shoveling snow was an aluminum grain scoop. I've had mine for about 40 years all I've had to do was file the burr off the edge once in awhile.

    I usually don't comment, but I found your channel and love your shows. I chose this one to comment on because I liked the honesty. You are opening your life and lifestyle out to the world and I appreciate that. I love the gardening methods and have learned some good tips that I can't wait to try when the weather is ready. However as a blogger and writer, I get the comments stress. I had a cheesecake recipe that went viral and it had four ingredients. It was a family recipe and just shared because I thought other people might enjoy it. Do you know I got cursed out for that? For a cheesecake recipe and I couldn't imagine the amount of madness you guys get. Sharing your life is personal and I think many would feel different if the lens was turned around. It's brave to put it all out there and the subject matter couldn't be better. I hope the small percentage of negative don't get to you both. Looking forward to more garden videos.     we raised about 30 chickens on our place and ducks,we had an area we threw table scraps-potato peelings,peach seeds,etc, the chickens,ducks birds and even the cows loved it..:)

    I always thought I would like this lifestyle, but I'm afraid that if I REALLY got into it the physical and mental requirements would be too demanding. Our Itsy Farm, in central Georgia, at the end of the paved road, with relatively snow-free winters and relatively hot summers is about as much "off grid" as I can stand...LOL

Btw, you all have enough antlers to hang up lots of clothes and coats using them.     you are so right - to each their own... the greatest thing about living off grid on your homestead is you get to be the king/queen of your homestead, of your domain. you get to live your life any way you want to. if you want to live without solar so be it if you want to live with 100k watts of solar so be it. its your homestead live it the way you want to.... you folks are right on with your style. by the way I love that snow plow. I am gauging this winter to see if I really need one or wait or ??? I look forward to your video on the plow. ... stay warm.

    In winter I barely use the fridge. Actually in a normal winter, it keep things from freezing :-/

    Hi Starry and Mr Hilder from Mr Nick Wiese: 2"blu foam is good stuff! for the refridge.& freezer outside. consider a Dunfoss conpressor 12V. or 110V. for on the top, Silver solder & R34 freon is reasonable. blue foam on all sides, Formica type Laminate using 3M fastbond contact cement is good on top of the foam (this is what Sunfrost did for 30 years) This is what we did 40 years ago! and it still works. Even the Battery bank gets insulated for winter power, a custom tracker info. is in the works. That you can build. Backwoods solar has a neat little meter for power use! good luck Nick W.

    If you haven't already, I'd like to see a video "geeking out" on the solar setup. How many watts of panels? Mono vs poly? Battery bank? Charge controllers? Performance in winter vs summer?
    I'm curious, because in the past I assumed that 1000s of watts of panels would be required, but lately I find myself questioning my math because it seems as though I could run a small apartment/home off of just 1-300 watts (assuming some work such as heating could be offloaded to other things).
    Anywho, thanks for the videos, they are all much appreciated.

    Nice to meet you both - I posted you vid on Facebook as I have friends (almost 750) in Canada, Maine, MI, WI as well as FL, GA, NC, CA, NM many will be interested in what you've shared (clothes dryer - great idea) especially would like to know all about what you're doing with the chickens that they lay in winter. The snow plow is interesting did you 'name it'? You said you had a vid on it - I'll look for that. I'm interested in how you got started, what your annual cost(s) are and how you meet them. Taxes, vehicle insurance, medical, etc. Also, what (if anything) you would've done differently.

    Good advice - the fridge outside makes sense or a kitchen outside. Without electric you get up with the sun and go to bed when it goes down. A healthier lifestyle

    Clever idea on the drying racks. I went from CFL to LED light Bulbs...electric company has been out 3 times to check on low energy use...ha...nope, the meter does work says they scratching their heads...I use 2.1 kw per month...I even use a light from 4 to midnight. Best

    You guys are living my dream! Its very hard to live like this in Belgium.. i'd have to pay €160.000 for a piece of land thats somewhat in the countryside. When I look up land in the USA i can find a mountaintop for $12.000 its insanely cheap!! I'd love to move one of these years when i save up a little more and get an RV lol

    I just can't wrap my head around why anyone would take issue with your outdoor fridge.
    If you can chill your food for free just using nature, why wouldn't you? Saves power for other things! :-)

    how many acreas are you folks on and is property tax high ...here in southern tier ny cattragus county freedom 14065 built a log sided garage taxes went high have natural spring for free water septic already in and cheap electric from village nearby arcade since it's real cheap 2 cents a kilowatt they have deal with state from hydro power from niagra falls ...but use mostly wood stove since on 22 acreas mostly woods. ...but to build any kind of home they have huge list of building codes you must follow or risk geting legal action. ..plus after geting approval for 1000 sft basic home found out they wanted $6000 property taxes between county and school and town taxes ...so for now live in barn up stairs ...but love the out door country life so thinking about selling everything move out of ny state and head out your way ..ware a person can be more free with out big brother telling you what to do and in your pockets. ..ps gentlemen down the road on 70 acreas had the town come out measure his deck found out it was bigger then they new so they raised his property tax a few dollars true story

    Hi Again, If you were to google the Trossachs in Scotland you would find our terrain is identical to yours....less the Bears. ha ha
    As I and many others seek to live off grid it's essential we gain the right information and that is where you come in with your knowledge.
    If the Internet went down for whatever reason then we would lose all your info but if we had DVD box sets then we could use our DVD player (powered by solar panel energy) to go over any subject needed as and when.
    You and Mr Hilder hold so much info that it needs to be harvested and sold to those interested before the SHTF and the internet goes off.

    I found your channel recently and subscribed instantly, and have binge watched a ridiculous amount of your videos! Your spirit and ethusiasm for life is so awesome and just very inspiring and heartwarming. I just have to say thank you for putting out very informational and real life content.     Of all the homesteaders on YT, you two seem to be the happiest with your chosen lifestyle. Every lifestyle requires compromises of some sort. For you, these are things that can test one's commitment to off-grid living, but you always seem positive and determined to make it work.. I admire your resourcefulness and have never thought you were doing without. On the contrary, you seem to have all that you want. I can't imagine you living any other way.

    I am so envious of your lifestyle and love your homestead set up. Mr. Hilder hit the nail on the head with his comment about listening to the people who are living it. 90% or more of what people read about how to do things is geared to SELLING people things we don't need. Unfortunately masses of people in this country have lost the ability to think for themselves. Instead they believe it's EASIER to be led around like sheep and follow the heard. I am working very hard to break that chain in my life and live a simpler more healthy and rewarding life. Thank you for your channel and inspiration. I hope you two have a wonderful and rewarding new year.

    Mr Hilder you made me giggle! I know how frustrating people can be, try not to take it to heart. From what I have seen your both very lucky people living where and like you are, if more people lived like you the world would be a better place. Common sense unfortunately is disappearing now a days, and people think they no it all because they read a book or went to college etc but until you live the life you can't really understand it! I think your both great and you have a lovely home 😊
