dont you just love kirsten's simple yet high captivating video editing?! no sound, no music but engaging scenes and great dialog. i find she does this will all her videos and very succesful. thanks again kirsten for another excellent video!
I grew up not too far from there and my dad also built a house for a big family out of scrap wood. He layered 2x4s like bricks hand hewed his beams and tore down big buildings for extra material. Oregon was a great place to grow up and I'm glad to see that there are still folks out there that consider living off the grid a good thing. I would like to visit this place in person some day. Thanks for sharing.
Brian I have to tell you that your video was so inspiring to watch. I am 52 and my wife and I are buying a a acreage and want to become self sufficient with collecting water and heating and using electric by solar. I'm building a greenhouse to grow our own food and raising chickens and beef for our own consumption. We will have propane for a back up but want to see if we can do it without. I have watched lots of videos and yours inspired me. You are very talented. Thanks for sharing.
As an Electrical contractor and retired soldier I am truly impressed! I commute to the VA Hospital on a electric mtn. bike which I recharge with solar panels, I am currently trying to get off the grid but a disabled soldiers salary isn't that much so I was very happy to see how much you have used salvaged materials and it inspired me, so thanks! One of my favorite videos.
This man would make one heck of a professor. I deeply respect people that are passionate about everything that interest them. Just not enough of that in our World.
I built a couple canoes based on his plans. His online courses are really great, detailed enough to do nice work and basic enough for me to follow even though I've never done any woodworking.
Brian is a beautiful, talented, loving, knowledgeable and a living example, what connecting to earth really means. This video should be shown in schools. Thank you so much for making it and posting it.
This is awesome!!! Someone who built his castle within his land. And now has made his castle happy for his soul and to mother earth/nature without paying a hefty ransom. You rock!!!
I like the way you build, I think the oriental theme is relaxing. Reusing things is the best way to go, not to be cheep but to prevent waste. Things like people deserve a second chance. Thank you so much for sharing.
could spend 3 years watching videos on this channel and still not have wasted 1 minute of my life. Best channel on youtube, plus this dude is such a legend
It's great to see the rest of the story. Speaking of sitting with the land and hearing what it speaks to you, how Zen Buddhist. Something I have practiced with many spaces. Love your work.
I like how he not only has gotten to the point where he has been able to live like he is able but that he teaches others how to do things too. Thank you another interesting video.
LOVED this. For Off Grid Hot Water we use a 40 gallon stainless steel wood fired "kettle" that we bought from the Amish. The saddle tank on the wood stove did not produce enough hot water for a family of 5's dishes, laundry, baths/showers... Hot water is an essential and one of the big problems for "Off Griders". The wood fired kettle solves that issue. All you need is wood and rain water.
Loving the lifestyle. My wife and I are preparing for retirement and setting up for off grid as much as we can as well. Thanks for sharing your video with us.
I love this style of living. In the future, I think humans will go back to doing this... full circle - using and making the most of natural resources without damaging the environment.
Robbob9933 While natural resource intensive, people in the past still had a more than sustainable life and just because there was a lot of work involved, it does not mean it was bad. We now have the communication, ideas, and ability to improve on the old way of life, and do more than just live "sustainably". As long as we work hard, following the laws of Nature, then this life can be increasingly productive and bearable.
Robbob9933 Rob, I suppose you think fracking, suburban sprawl, and chemical agriculture aren't resource intensive. These people will be minimally affected if there ever is a major grid failure. They're actually close to independent, instead of being just more consumers. Hats off to them.
Robbob9933 They did and do. I have 2 family members who live 100% self sufficient. One in the UK and one in Norther Sweden (within the Arctic Circle). All their energy is from renewables, all the food is grown or comes from self reared animals. Money to buy things like solar panels, wind turbines and other thing requiring money comes from selling excess food produced by themselves, or by working for others. And no, they don't live like hermits... they have cars, skimobiles, etc. It is possible, all it takes is effort and the capability to ignore people who say it can't be done.
steve w First, get off that chemical agriculture crap. It shows you don't think critically. Now if you had said mono-cropping or wetland crops in dry land soil, you would be speaking with intellect.
Awesome video, Brian really knows what he is doing. I love the winter fridge idea and the kayak he builds are insane. I hope there will be a follow up video in the future.

This is an absolutely wonderful documentary! I'm so glad I happened upon it! I would love to have these skills that Brian has. What an amazing lifestyle!
This dude is incredible, I am 20 years old and I feel liek I have missed out to much on this stuff like building your own house and finding your passion and just doing it. very inspiring.
He is a genius. A person who is much ahead of time. A true nature lover n knows who to use the resources v well. God bless u with good health happiness n loooooooooong life.
this video was moving and inspiring. It reminded me of the time when i was younger. We would build our hideouts/treehouses and pretend we lived in them. We were warriors and hunters and whatever we wanted to be.
Brian thank you for a "boat load" of great information! I really enjoyed your innovative way of using your waste heat to heat your water just to name one great innovative technique.
Does he sell plans for that house? Love it! I couldn't help but notice a couple of negative responses below. If you live in an urban area you can still make many changes while learning new skills. Rent a plot in a community garden and take gardening classes. Learn how to can and pickle.Study and implement the best water filters for your personal use. Experiment and use less electricity in your apartment. Grow herbs in a container on your balcony or outside your front door.
& you can if you wanted,, he got is knowledge with time,, start small & simple work your way up to his level or beyond ....my first project was a 10x10x14 foot shed I hand built my self which I eventually helped my parents build a two story 5 bedroom, 3 bathroom 2 car garage house,, I started small & now I could do anything from electrical, plumbing, frame, drywall roof,, everything to build a house because I started small & worked my way up by simplifying it,, all I need now is time & material oh and money((=
Your home/farm is beautiful. Well thought out and carried out. It show that you took your time in every detail and it is lovely. Thank you for sharing.
So intelligent and inspiring! I look forward to seeing 'winter-life' presented as we are inundated with the ease and beauty of folks living with year-round sunny temperatures.
Using what nature provides...beautifully crafted building and kyacks that have more beauty in their design...thankyou for sharing... Creation at it's best...⭐
this guy is literally living my dream. i am going to a boat building school this fall for 12 months and then after that i plan to work until i can afford to buy my own piece of land where i can live off grid and build boats as a living..
Brilliant! Just brilliant! We need more people with this frame of mind set. So many take away ideas, thanks for sharing!!! (Yeah, man didn't "re-invent the wheel", he made it worse.)
I can see the harmony in your lifestyle and philosophy. I'm glad that you have found your calling. I'm still having trouble with mine however I'm going to try to build a garden on top of my sun room roof and hopefully some how nature plants a seed in me.
Another awesome video, Thank you for posting it. You can hear the passion in Brian's voice at the end when he is discussing his kayack's, which are a thing of beauty.
The Japanese Forest House is a dream! I came across your video while researching homesteading in OR. Planning a big move to start my dream. Thank you for the inspiration!
I'm involved with a couple with two young children' who in the past year sold their home in Easley SC and moved to Guatemala. They are privately funded Christian missionaries. There ministry has been primarily to the poorest of the poor. In a community of about 30,000 people who live in shanties around a large garbage dump just outside Guatemala city. They built a home for people to receive help of "any kind" near the dump with volunteers from their home church in SC a couple of years ago and are trying to change Guatemala one life at a time starting in the garbage dump. After watching your video I was impressed with your ability to make the most of almost nothing! You have been blessed with a tremendous talent that the world we live in would only want to exploit for financial gain. These people need places to live work eat and learn. Their country isn't going to do it. The vision is taking a forgotten place and making a sustainable life for for people who have nothing. They do have a terrific climate and "garbage" and the grace of Gods protection. And people with the love of God in their heart to help them. Your gifts are what I have coveted for myself. I'm a 47 year old horticulturist/landscape architect and ex- corporate executive. Who now, works with his hands to scratch out a living for my wife and 3 children and anyone else. Your energy for sustainable solutions and resource management is what I'm hoping to bring; Lord willing, to these people. Along with my friends. After watching, I just felt perhaps there is an eternal purpose for your skills even in the darkest of places. That could effect thousands of people the world considers waste and garbage. Yet still bare the same image of God as you and I. David
To bad the world isn't on board with this more. You right our lives now are plastic, and we lost the ability to work with nature seeing the beauty in it. Thanks for your informative video.
What a fantastic video. Loved the farm, so much ingenuity and creativity. That's some eco-friendly hedonism right there. And the kayak was amazing, loved the story behind it.
Here in northern wisconsin we don't have big redwood trees but miles of white & red pine trees life is good, we all need to get to the simple things life!
He is so brilliant. Is he married. Omgoodness he has made so much improvement on his land. I fell in love with him the first time you showed his house with the kayak in the ceiling.
dont you just love kirsten's simple yet high captivating video editing?! no sound, no music but engaging scenes and great dialog. i find she does this will all her videos and very succesful. thanks again kirsten for another excellent video!
great summary of her style. Always enjoyable
Agreed.
I love what she does and how she can share stories with so many people around the world. 😍

This man would make one heck of a professor. I deeply respect people that are passionate about everything that interest them. Just not enough of that in our World.
ThirdEyeJedi true, he pulled us into his kayak world and even though I noticed, I didnt mind.
Thanks Kirsten. Wow! Like many other commenters, I am really impressed with this guy, how he chooses to live and what he has done.
You sir are amazing. Being a young fella, you definitely refresh my hope in the next generation.
This is awesome!!!
Someone who built his castle within his land.
And now has made his castle happy for his soul and to mother earth/nature without paying a hefty ransom.
You rock!!!
That is the kind of knowledge we need more of in this world.
I really appreciate the fact that you have students come volunteer ,that alone makes you somebody in my book.
JUST ONE THING TO SAY.
WOW! great!!! So much here-and-now thinking and naturality and all about creation!
That whole explanation of the kayak at the very end was BADASS
I like the way you build, I think the oriental theme is relaxing. Reusing things is the best way to go, not to be cheep but to prevent waste. Things like people deserve a second chance. Thank you so much for sharing.

A beautiful little video that is a feast for the eyes, ears and the mind! Brian is wonderful, genuine lover of our planet and being human!
A true craftsman; he builds from the heart.

Wow Kirsten I can't believe the quality documentaries you make! Thanks so much for this one!
I love this style of living. In the future, I think humans will go back to doing this... full circle - using and making the most of natural resources without damaging the environment.
The "good old days" never existed Clive. The olden days were natural resource intensive, required huge families just to keep up with the chores.
Robbob9933

Faircompanies does a remarkably consistent job of furnishing me with new ideas. It's probably one of the top 5 channels I subscribe to.
Awesome video, Brian really knows what he is doing. I love the winter fridge idea and the kayak he builds are insane. I hope there will be a follow up video in the future.

This rocks! i would love to stay a month or two there!
Smart guy with a great presentation style and good energy. And SO talented.
I applaud his efforts to live the life that he wants. Not for everybody, but if it makes him happy, have at it!
