- Our grade 5 students at Oak Creek shine as a remarkable and engaged community. Their
vibrant participation in events like the CBC Music Challenge underscores our dedication to
inclusivity and proactive learning. This year, employing a student-centered approach, we
empowered our students to choose roles for their performance, refining their performance
techniques. The selection of Jessie Reyez's poignant song "Great One" resonated deeply with
our grade 5 cohort. Understanding that Reyez wrote the song to express gratitude for people in
her life, including loved ones who have passed, resonated profoundly with our students. We
delved into discussions about the song's powerful themes, emphasizing the enduring
connections we maintain with our loved ones even long after they are gone.
In a heartfelt tribute, our grade 5 students have dedicated "Great One" to our loved ones who
have passed. The video features poignant photos of a few of our cherished departed, adding a
personal touch to the performance. Inspired by the profound message of the song and
motivated by a desire to honour our loved ones, the grade 5 students decided to name their
band "Legacy Keepers." This choice reflects their aspiration to be great and carry on the legacy
left by their loved ones. The excitement among students is palpable as they eagerly anticipate
the CBC Music Challenge showcase in December. Through their performance as the "Legacy
Keepers," our grade 5 students aim not only to showcase musical talent, but also to celebrate
the enduring impact of loved ones and inspire others to embrace and preserve their legacies. A
palpable sense of excitement emanates from the students, and we convey our sincere thanks to
CBC for coordinating this challenge, fostering musical connections across students spanning
the entire nation.
