Josh are you Texan ? A&M has always been the red headed step kid, the "awe isn't he special" baby with issues. Jimbo had one good year with a Jamis Winston on his resume. The very was he treated FSU should've been a huge Red flag.
I’m just curious how Josh would rank the top 25 coaching jobs in CFB. I mean (heaven forbid) if all the Power5 head coaches were at a convention and the roof caved in, what would be the top 25 programs in the pecking order to fill vacancies.
The good news for am fans is that the search has concluded. It has been confirmed and the announcement is eminent. The new coach will bring national championship experience from Texas. Also SEC stops in Florida South Carolina Auburn Alabama Georgia and others. Yes coach BOOM MUSCHAMP will be the 12th man and new skipper to lead your program. Ready or not here comes the BOOM. Here comes the BOOM.
They also had a pretty big win over Florida in the 2020-21 season. Florida lost to national champ Bama by 4 points that season in the SEC ship game. Crazy that AnM has been able to win some big games but lose to FCS schools lol
@@encycl07pedia- you’re a clown. UF was 8-2 going into the sec ship game that season with the #1 OFFENSE in the country. They lost to TAMU on a last second field goal and also lost to LSU on another last second field goal after they had already won the game due to a player throwing a shoe after stopping them to end the game. Realistically UF should have been 9-1 going into play bama that season. Clearly it was a big win that year, Florida finished the regular season ranked in the top 10. Do you not watch college football?
As an A&M fan I can say a lot of things FSU said I thought were bitter but turned out to be true. Jimbos offense was becoming too predictable. Jimbo struggled to have a good offensive line or offensive line coach. Jameis Winston was a once a decade type talent you see in College Football and he made Jimbo a massive amount of money.
I’m an Aggie and I said that he’d be a waste of money and have the same results as Sumlin. I was told to shut up and I didn’t know what I was talking about. Now we are going to waste $76mil. Shameful. That could fund a huge endowment that would pay for hundreds of students to go to school every year. Instead it is wasted.

By the time he got to A&M his best years were well behind him
The Aggies AD, Ross Bjork, responsible for extending Fisher's contract in 2021, should have been fired on the spot as well. It's unbelievable. Bjork got away for free.
I agree. The only thing Jimbo had done well at A&M when they "doubled down" on his contract was recruit. He hadn't proved he was any better than Sumlin at that point. Bjork panicked because of what was going on at LSU and Texas.
The thing is, he also pulled buzz Williams and Jim schlossnagle for basketball and baseball respectively. Both coaches are doing amazing things with the sport so you can make an argument that those hires are saving him right now.
If you think Ross Bjork was really responsible for the extension, then you're deluded. John Sharp and the donors pushed for the extension because they all have an inferiority complex. If someone wanted to come in and pay Fisher more they should have let that happen. With that being said, Bjork is safe at this moment. Once the new coach is hired, he most likely still gets fired.
His abject refusal to fire Steve Addazio was what did him in. When you are on your 3rd string quarterback because of OL-related injuries 2 years in a row and you GIVE THAT OFFENSIVE LINE COACH AN EXTENSION, that's almost a for cause firing.
It’s really telling that when Jimbo took the atm job he didn’t bring any of the assistant coaches with him yet he wouldn’t fire the incompetent assistant coaches
@@jamesbeaman6337 it is very telling if you leave FSU and don’t bring any assistant coach with you to atm. The same group of assistants that needed to have at least a few fired yet he would not and lobbied for more money for those same assistants. I was not talking about Summlin’s staff
Your last comment about the difference between the trophy case (i.e. perceived reputation/tradition) vs. the actual infrastructure and resources necessary to win is spot on. I'm a Notre Dame alumnus. Our program has more consensus national championships than every other program not named Alabama, so our trophy case is stocked. The Irish also enjoy a national fanbase, a television contract, and top-notch facilities. Also, love it or hate it, the university has unparalleled name recognition. _Yet we have absolutely sucked for almost thirty years._ In fact, it's been so long since we've been worth a damn that two generations of college football fans cannot fathom the attention Notre Dame receives because we've been a middling football team for the entirety of their lives. Why? The administration decided to "de-emphasize" football in the 90's to be more like the Ivies and our hiring process for head coaches was hijacked. Like A&M, all the ingredients for a successful football program exist at Notre Dame. The trophy case proves that. All that's missing is the right coach and staff. The reason I'm more bullish on A&M is that they _really want to win_ and will keep trying coaches till they find one that will take them to the promised land. The feckless cowards in the Notre Dame administration are happy to continue to be "in the conversation".
Notre Dame has a great young dynamic young coach. If people like you get off his ass you will be in playoffs in the next few years. You've got to get a big time quarterback and stockpile the dudes. Freeman's z's and O's as good as any. Kelly left average talent. Kelly is very average no matter where he's at. Notre Dame is a small school in Indiana. You don't have a conference. You've very average. Don't forget who you are. There is absolutely no sport that Notre Dame will will win a championship in anytime soon. Ranked woman's basketball routes by number 6 South Carolina. Baseball and football coaches poached by sec and acc and their average coaches that won't win championships. Wake Forest Duke army Navy Harvard and Yale used to be powerhouses. Notre Dame does good to be top 25. Reality.
@@wordnerd2005 Dude, you're missing my point. Notre Dame became a household name precisely _because_ everyone thought they were "average" and could never win a championship. Then they did. Then they did it again. Then several more times. They accomplished this because Notre Dame had both elite talent and elite coaching multiple times in its history which is why they're _still_ one of the most successful programs in college football history, even now after 30 years of mediocrity. Sure, the sport has changed even since the 90's. But my point is that while offensive fads and creative schemes come and go, solid, fundamental coaching and elite talent still wins football games. A&M has elite talent and top-notch facilities; they're just missing an elite coach to make them a perennial top 3 team. And if I know the Aggies, they'll keep shoveling money until they find one. I respect that. Finally, while I like Freeman and think he's a good man, he's simply not an elite coach, nor is he recruiting at the level we need to win it all.
You’re crazy. Notre Dame has higher hurdles due to academic requirements. “Deemphasizing football” included shallowing the pool ND could recruit from. Also ND attempted to maintain independence in the era of conference consolidation. They have struggled to establish a football identity in the modern landscape. They’re like a weird hobo nomad that the ACC likes to beat.
@@Zapp__Branniganyou and the guy who runs this channel are totally missing the elephant in the room which is conference affiliation. If you want to analyze an analogue to A&M, look no further than their former conference mate, Nebraska. The only variables they do not share are rich recruiting grounds (A&M) and a historically rich record of success (Nebraska). IMO these two programs are mirror image victims of conference realignment. Their potential is not stunted by their individual characteristics like fan support or money, it’s by their conference affiliation. Whether pundits and fans want to admit it or not, the birth of these super conferences that have resulted in monstrosities like the SEC and Big 10 will necessarily destroy the prospects and upward mobility of programs like Nebraska and A&M who were once in the heart of their conferences but are now step children on the geographic fringes of their new homes which orbit historical rivalries and dominant programs in their native heartland. In fact, when A&M took the SEC invite and left the B12, one of the supposed advantages was “stepping out of the shadow of Texas”. Lol! Nebraska in the B10 became a fish out of water. It lost its ability to pull recruits out of its traditional territory west of the Mississippi and mistakenly assumed it was entitled to 10 win seasons at worst every year leading to a coaching carousel that has had the program circling the drain for nearly a decade. They haven’t been to a bowl since 2016. They’ve sold out every game since the 1960s. So how does this happen? We’re seeing the same entitled pathology at A&M. There were generations of fans, and the recruits they produce, who grew up on B12 football, watching rivalries year after year that kept people regionally energized and talking whether at the water cooler or over thanksgiving dinner. The history and tradition is the forgotten dynamo creating cohesion and chronology, it has been irreparably harmed and in many instances destroyed (rose bowl) by the shifting CFB landscape that seemingly considers nothing but more money. I don’t understand why more people don’t understand or recognize this.
If Jimbo does coaches again he is padding his pockets. He is relatively young and his buyout does not change if he gets another coaching job. He will coach again if he gets a call.
Your Texas A&M clip really is spot on. My own school has to undergo a massive rebuild and coaching search. As great as our opening could be, I do not want to compete with A&M’s resources. There are levels to this.
As someone that lives in Texas I'll say UT and ATM both have top tier resources but...everything is almost controlled by the boosters that always make the wrong choices. They have been under performing for awhile now. NIL could change things. We'll see
The MSU opening is not a great landing spot lol. Starting next year, they will get smoked by Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State, USC, UCLA, Washington, Oregon whenever they play them. They can only hope to be competitive in the middle of the pack of the Big Ten and maybe get an upset over one of the actual programs.
Jimbo time has passed him by. Its the Les Miles effect. LSU former players were saying on various podcast that the stuff A&M was running they ran at LSU. He just refused to adapt.
Part of me wonders if Woodward acted like he was interested in Jimbo just to make A&M overcommit to him knowing in reality he never had any intention of hiring him... Lmao.
@@AnthonyJ504the ultimate big brain move. Reminds me of when the Celtics said they were interested in taking Fultz with the #1 overall pick just to get the sixers to trade away their entire future just for the Celtics to take Tatum at 3rd and said “we were always drafting Jayson Tatum, regardless of if we traded the 3rd pick or not”
What people need to realize is, A&M historically hasn’t had anything close to this level of investment into their football program. When A&M joined the SEC in 2012, JFF did his thing and got the billionaire fans attention. A&M received 5x more donor money than the previous year donor total of the ENTIRE SEC, And the money never stopped coming in. LITERAL BILLIONS of dollars worth of some of the best facilities in the nation have been built over the past 15 years. Everyone clowning on A&M is absolutely right about one thing, we do have an empty trophy case. But Jimbo was the first A&M coach to truely experience full control of a program with unlimited resources and facilities. Sumlin got some of that luxury but he wasn’t gonna be our guy either. The AD is in a hot streak with hires with the rest of TAMU athletics as well. Let’s see what the next guy does.
A&M did not really start spending serious money on football until around 2012. It basically got them the 4th most SEC wins over the next decade, but the head coaches were not good enough. A&M was good in the 80s and half the 90s, and then fell way behind their rivals which kept A&M behind until the 2012 year when they won with Manziel and started building facilities. Need a really good coach.
Texas A&M also had Jackie Sherrill, who cheated and got caught, to help the Aggies win games during his tenure. His successor, R.C. Slocum was a good and apparently honest coach, unlike Sherrill, but A&M later fired him for lack of enough wins.
Historically, the Aggies weren't a huge school in terms of enrollment or resources. For a long time, Kyle field was a dump, and they could rarely win the SWC most years, which was just them, Texas, and cupcake private schools that didn't care about football.
@@kaminsod4077 Prior to the 70s the "cupcakes" could also regularly win. At one point even Rice was consistently a good team. A good chunk of its history A&M was essentially VMI or Citidel with an all male all military student body in the middle of nowhere, which makes it funny that the horns thump their chest at the "all time" series record.
I totally get Josh’s rant. When you try to objectively rank college programs, it depends heavily on how much weight you put on what they did in the past versus where they are at in 2023, versus what they could be by 2026. When you look at past performance, Texas A&M just barely slips into the top 20 of relevant CFB programs. The qualitative peers (historically) are schools like Michigan State, UCLA, Arkansas, Mississippi, Pitt, Iowa, Wisconsin, Colorado. But none of those schools seriously have a paved path to potential dynasty status in the next 6 years (with the right staff in place), like Texas A&M.
@sc100ott...this sort of thinking either requires tons of mental gymnastics or totally ignoring aggy history, and that includes past "big splash" coaching hires. Jackie Sherrill? Stealing Francione from Bama? Mike Sherman? All total homeruns and the leader needed to build an aggy dynasty according to fans. Those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it. Money, facilities, fan support, recruiting and coaching aren't the issue. So what is it?
Josh..I challenge you to go back a bit further than Sumlin and Jimbo when looking at their coaches. Look at that list of names and then compare what they were able to do at A&M vs what they accomplished at another school...in some cases AFTER they left A&M lol. After you do that then think about your little rant at the end and how poorly it will likely age. Vegas seems to often know things the rest of us don't. I wonder how they would rate the chance of success no matter who A&M hires...unless they just go totally insanely desperate and throw a half billion dollar 100% guaranteed contract at Kirby Smart, Ryan Day, some successful NFL coach or even Saban assuming he wants to coach well into his 80's? Those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it. aggy has a long history of desperate coaching hires including hiring Emory Ballard (not as HC) away from Texas and Darrel Royal because he was the co-architect of the Wishbone offense, and then many other "big time" head coaching hires throughout the years. (The most successful of which got A&M banned from TV and bowls because of recruiting violations😂)
I can’t disagree with Josh Pate. Texas A&M has everything in place to be a dominant program. However if you have the wrong coach you won’t win. Simple as that
Josh, you are one of the few talking heads that actually get it. It's been extremely frustrating as an Aggie alum (class of '87), that we cannot hire the right coach, and with each bad hire, it set's us back a decade. I've been arguing the same argument that you just made. As a head football coach, there is absolutely nothing that A&M lacks to be a Championship contender annually. Our facilities are 2nd to none; largest stadium in the SEC; loyal and committed "12th Man" fanbase that sells out the student section EVERY GAME; endless resources; an administration committed to bringing a championship to College Station; wealthy booster willing to shell out what it needs to make it happen; great academics & Aggie network; what else could you ask for? I remember when they hired Jimbo, I thought to myself, why not Kirby Smart? I just want one natty before I die...just one!
As a Longhorn fan, the Dan Lanning hire would absolutely keep me up at night. ATM under Lanning would be a problem. The man can recruit, he can coach, he develops, the players seem to love him. If they are able to pull that off, I would venture to say they would eventually unseat Georgia the way Georgia unseated Bama. Lanning is the real deal. I hope he stays at Oregon for UT's sake lol 🤘🏽
I remember when coaching salaries started to go over a million dollars A&M needed to keep their salaries at the top, so they signed Jackie Sherrill to a 1.7 million dollar contract. Bear Bryant was still coaching and the Bear never made a million, in fact he stated that he did not believe he should make more than his boss the Chancellor of the University of Alabama.
They just gave the last coach six years to win. That's hardly a "step in and win immediately". Yes, they wanted to see incremental improvement. But not "win immediately".
Great segment and 100% spot on. There is a grand canyon sized chasm between the trophy case and the job. The job is top tier - no argument there. If I were a yearly A&M opponent, I would not like this firing of jimbo decision as it may - may - put in place someone that will bring A&M to the level it can be. I would much prefer mediocre jimbo remains so my program can reliably defeat him every year...
The issue is Josh seems to act like most fans only look at oh they haven't won titles so the program must be trash. Far from it. In reality I look at the fact that they can't win 10 games at all and can't use their high amount of 5 stars correctly and they inevitably transfer.
@@Denozo88 Sumlin had one Top 5 class in 6 cycles. All the rest were 10th or lower. I'm an Aggie and I'll tell you we have NEVER recruited like we did under Jimbo before. Ever. We have always been a fringe Top 10-top 20 recruiting school since they invented the ranking system for HS athletes. Jimbo raised the bar for landing perennial Top 5/10 classes in College Station. The problem was/is he forgot how to develop and made poor decisions with assistant hirings, offensive scheme staleness, underperforming upperclassmen promised starting jobs, not utilizing the portal effectively, etc. In short, college football changed, and he couldn't adapt. Or maybe he wasn't that great to begin with and was only ever an elite recruiter, idk.
As always, enjoy the show! Good take on the TAM job opening. One thing you might want to mention: the reason some programs with money and talent don't succeed is because of booster/Admin issues. Is this an issue in Aggieland? I have no idea but would be interesting to hear discussed.
Texas A&M's culture probably prevents some otherwise competent coaches from wanting to coach there. Yes, the fans rabidly support the team for the most part, but they have some strange traditions that are like a religion to them.
The first thing AM Trustees should do is fire the AD for writing such a terrible coaching deal for Jimbo. A rookie contract negotiator could've written a better deal. After eating 80M, I would think they would be smarter about a Coach than to throw another 100M out the door...but then again, dumb money is always dumb money.
Towards the end of Jimbo's tenure at FSU, I had a member of the faculty tell me the players usually only saw him once or twice per week other than game time. I don't know if that's true, but I think about it every time I watch his teams fold up as soon as things get tough.
That's actually quite common. I've spoken with many ex Georgia bulldogs. Going Through all the coaches , there's a player who says they never saw Dooley, except a few times a week then on game day...same for all the coaches except Kirby
I’m glad someone besides us A&M fans is actually talking about this. Yeah we know we aren’t a top tier program by any means, we know we aren’t relevant. You don’t have to tell us that, but with the fan base, money, and facilities we have and the recruiting classes we’ve had coming in. With the right coaching staff we could be in the top 6-8 every year I think. Idk why but the big guys up top really suck at picking out coaches. I hope they do the Aggie faithful a solid this time and get us a good one.
You are 100% correct about Texas A&m. That school has everything necessary to be a winner. People who point to the trophy case are definitely casual analysts. A programs history does not win future games! A great example of the point you are making with A&m, is Penn State wrestling program. Before Carl Sanderson coached Penn state's wrestling, they did not have the trophy case, but they definitely were primed to be a winner with the right coach. Texas A&m just needs to find their Cael Sanderson.
Well, I tell you what, I will believe it when I see it. Haven't ever seen it yet. As I won't be surprised to see A&M hire another dud as a new head coach.
I hope to god not. Right now Colorado lets deion be deion. Aint no way A&M lets deion be deion unless there is an offensive mastermind that makes all the moves. (Yeah i know your comment was sarcasm but still)@@CETGale
Only reason you fire him right now is if you have the guy and are ready to announce. Otherwise this seems reactionary and the names I'm seeing being thrown around don't seem like needle movers. I don't think you fire a coach because he lost two three ranked teams by one score with a back up QB. Also you let him finish out the season because of what he's done elevating the program.
Coach has been decided. Announcement eminent. Probably in later part of week. Was a part of national championship Longhorns. If you want to win consistently you cant let a handful of boosters dictate every move you make. A&M has resources, but those resources have strings attatched that make the whole situation tenuous in regard to running a major college football program. It's a good job because of the money, but also a bad job for the same reason.
Josh - It would seem that maybe your argument is kinda being made in Austin. UT has won more than A&M, but they went through a similar series of good but not great coaches. It is a seriously crazy comment about our culture that multiple places will be paying so many millions of dollars for people to not work. That might make an interesting masters thesis for a business major - How much is being paid annually for people to not work in football and other sectors of public employment.

he did inherit a decent amount from Bobby Bowden in 2010 and there is a credible argument that after the Bowden legacy in recruiting expired post 2013, it allowed for the rapid rise of Clemson. He did a good job at FSU not messing it up when he inherited it but both arguments can be made that he built FSU into its championship in 2013 versus he inherited a championship recruiting class in 2010 and simply did enough to win a championship. From 2010- 2014, FSU was competing for a conference title. In those years, especially from 2010-2012, he was using 90% Bowden recruits. From 2013- 2014, he was using at least 50% Bowden recruits. After 2014, FSU stopped competing for conference titles under Jimbo, and Clemson coincidentally started to rule the ACC. After 2014 is when the team was made up of Jimbo recruits. The talent he had in the early FSU years were naturally gifted and he just did enough to not mess things up. Plain and simple. It was that clear for everyone to see.
Jimbo has always been a stubborn man. He didn’t get along as well with Saban as most of his other assistance mostly because Jimbo was so stubborn and wanted to do things his own way, that don’t work when you’re on Nick Sabans staff. He doesn’t seem to be willing to adapt to the way the game has changed, and it has changed fairly significantly since 2013, and it’s more evident every season. He also hasn’t had the benefit of an elite first round type quarterback and he doesn’t run the type of system that can win 10 games with a merely serviceable game managing quarterback.
Love the take on why A&M hasn't been successful due to coaching and internal reasons. I'm a casual college football fan and I find it crazy how big college football fans don't understand that when it comes to top programs nowadays, success comes from coaches and the team itself. Power 5 conferences own the CFP and March Madness, so each school in each conference receives revenue from these playoff tournaments every year, regardless of their own programs success (or lack of). On top of this, athletic departments, boosters, and alumni see that the winning programs have fantastic facilities with all the resources you could possibly need as a student-athlete, so they do the same for their school. They saw that having a very involved alumni/student/fanbase is very important as well. Having $350 million dollar facilities as well as amazing resources for nutrition, mental health, education, career planning, etc. is the standard for Power 5 schools. They are all just about all the same when it comes to that stuff. Each of these programs have the externals factors to be great, but it will ultimately come down to the coaches they hire, and how that coaches uses those resources to create a great football team that wins on Saturdays.

I would be smiling from ear to ear if I were Jimbo Fisher. Not fun to get fired, and usually a blow to one's self esteem, but $77 million could ease the pain of being fired big time.
As much as I hate Michigan, Harbough shouldn’t have been suspended. Every team does stuff like this, but Michigan just got caught. Just like back in the day with SMU and their recruiting money. Everyone was doing it back in the day SMU just happened to be the ones who got caught.
IMO, A&M has the same thing holding it back as Texas and Auburn. Namely a culture of meddling boosters running things and making all the decisions. All that money might be nice but all that money meddles and wants to have its way. All that money means the football coach and the AD are never truly in charge.
Idk im not an A&M Fan but probably so 😂..Honestly it’s going to depend who they have lined up to replace him. Also it’s going to also depend what the expectations are and it seems like it’s to compete for championships which is going to be really hard in the SEC with Saban/Smart. They are going to want to bring in someone who can compete with both and IDK who that would even be.
yep that's pretty much my thoughts. Most of the games we lost this season were by less than a touchdown, I think some of our fans need to get real about what it means to compete in the SEC. Shit happens. I understand the frustration but Jimbo has been recruiting like a madman, that's what it takes to win in this conference. So right, TAM has made horrific hires in their history. Plenty of good coaches but no great coaches. They have it all, great loyal fan base, deep pockets, great facilities, hot bed of recruiting, supportive board and AD, big name school in Texas. They just need the right coaching hires, head coach and coaching support team. Nothing is holding them back except themselves.
The last time we at Texas A&M had the right coach was when Bear Bryant coached the Junction boys. in 1957 we were unbeaten and practically unscored upon going into our last two games. Word came ouch that Bear Bryant was leaving for Alabama. We lost those last two games when we should have been favored. RC Slocum seems to be the gold standard for most people at A&M. But he grossly under achieved. We sent more players to the pros than Nebraska did while Nebraska won three out of four national championships. RC would you get a lead and then go conservative and lose or have to struggle to come back to win at the end of the game. That was his MO. And it did not even get us close to a national championship. I like RC personally(he tells great dirty jokes in the men's room) and he was a really good coach, but he was not a great coach. He did not have a championship mentality. The rest of the country believes that we just do not deserve a national championship program, but we believe they are wrong. Often we believe that to the point that we look ridiculous. But we can live with that. We have seen our schools grow by leaps and bounds and our athletic facilities do the same. We believe that we are entitled to a program that competes at the national level. In fact, we believe we are long overdue. But as you pointed out Josh, we are one coach away!
@@CETGalethere's gonna be a lot of rumors on who's gonna hire deion. But anyone with half a brain would give deion another year at Colorado. Yeah he's in a serious rebuild and trying to do well. But give him 2 years to see if he's really got it.
I'm in the wrong industry....$76M just to go away! And college football has been forcing athletes to stick around at a school but allows schools and coaches to bed hop and still get paid
I am from Texas and understand the schools, but most people outside of the state and even some in the state have no idea what a powerhouse A&M is. Everyone always thinks of Texas as the best in the state. My son, a sophomore Aggie, was accepted to Texas and a lot of top-tier schools outside of the state as well. After spending time in college station and reviewing and visiting other campuses nationwide you get a clear picture that A&M is a powerhouse in academics, athletics, and everything else the university offers.
Dude respect to tamu but college station is a dump. I get that its a way better school but id rather go to ole miss just cuz oxford is nicer. College station is the worst sec town ive ever been to
I went to UT my freshman year just so my family could say their 3 kids all went to UT. My sisters transferred out as my oldest sister transferred to Michigan for law school & my 2nd oldest sister transferred to Michigan for medical school. I didn’t like it as a lot of kids there were super judgmental or acted super fckn entitled.
Y’all thought Beamer was the only one on the hot seat??? Go Gamecocks but y’all know there’s been some convos along the lines of “You or them Coach!” “Understood Ray! [Tanner]” either the USC coaching staff has at least 2 coming away this off season or Shane himself. I doubt Shane will go….
I'd call Urban first if I were A&M.. not sure if he wants to get back into coaching, but I wouldn't be surprised if he did.. Notre Dame or A&M are programs I could see him genuinely consider returning for..
I get your point Josh and agree with your take when talking about the era of TAMU being a member of the SEC. However with Texas joining the conference this could adversely affect TAMU in the same way it did in the SWC days. Also I want to point out that Bear Bryant and Gene Stallings coached at TAMU - zero natties. Different era, yes. But if Saban and Smart could do it, shouldn’t the Bear have been able to as well?
Bear Bryant went 9-0-1 in year 3, won the SWC, and wasn't invited to a bowl. College Football was different in 1956. Stallings was a failure 3 of his 4 seasons at A&M.
Texas joining the SEC will not effect the money that comes into Texas A&M through donors though. If anything those donors may start throwing in more money cause they hate TU.
A&M is a top tier position for many coaches as A&M is one of the few places where you actually have all the pieces. Like A&M has top tier recruiters, facilities, and players, as well as the funds to do so. We’ve just never been lucky with a good coach yet, maybe one day it’ll hit.
@@davidhfranzvery good point. I guess we’ll never know what could have been had he stayed. But mama called (or Texas made it difficult for all the SWC teams back in the day so 🤷🏻♂️)
I wouldn't be surprised to see A&M act quickly on hiring their next coach to prevent losing as many transfers as they can. If they wait until the playoff is over, they might be screwed.
We will still lose commitments and transfers cause A, some kids committed because they wanted to play for jimbo, and B, A&M had a lackluster season which will always affect recruiting. But if A&M hires the right guy then that may not affect recruiting as much as it would’ve.
Here's what Josh basically said: coaches will be lining up out the door and around the block foaming at the mouth to ink a ludicrous contract made by people who have no idea what they're doing...
There’s no way they’re signing a long term deal, that’s what made Jimbo so hard to fire, this is a 100 million dollar blunder when looking at the rest of the staff & then god knows how much when counting the recruiting value they will lose, they spent so much money recruiting the #1 class ever
And the new coach will want to jump in as soon as possible to build up a damn to try and stop the mass exodus of players getting ready to leave. I think they already know who they want, and now they have to dot the T's and cross the I's to finish. Shit. Bad thought. Bring in Urban Meyer and keep Petrino, and then hire Aranda once he's fired to reconstruct the defense. Ready to serve and eat national championship.
They are gonna need more than Elko if they want to be able to compete for championships. Not sure who is going to be able to compete with Saban/Smart not to mention Kiffin/Drinkwitz, Heupel, Kelly etc. and next year Sark. but the ONLY one that comes to mind that had success in the SEC winning natties is Urban Meyer. Idk if he would even want to coach again or if he could have the same success since CFB has changed so much since he left but at least he’s proven.
@@brookico Mike Elko already knows how to maneuver at A&M, was a great dc, has done a great job at Duke and the players he coached and helped recruit are upper classmen now. He would be the easiest transition and keep Petrino calling the o. A good blend of talent on both sides.
I doubt it since he’s not winning like he was starting out & doesn’t have a lot of experience yet in the P5. If he were in his 3-4th year and winning big in the Pac 12 then he might be looked at but he isn’t. He’s struggling in the Pac 12 and the SEC is a completely different beast with just Saban/Smart not to mention Kiffin/Drinkwitz/Heupel/ Kelly etc. and next year Sark coming in with Texas.

@@BigDave131 the contract extension made sense at the time, and that's what people don't realize. We signed that extension after Texas A&M finished the 2020 season 9-1, with the only loss being to Alabama, with that 2020 team being considered one of the greatest teams ever, and while yes it was a blowout that was the same score as the national championship, which demonstrates that we were playing to the level of the best teams in the nation. The decision made sense at the time. Bjork is also still here because he hired Schlossnagel, Joni, and I think he hired Buzz as well
I think Kirby would've struggled to get a footing at A&M just like Jimbo did because of the grinder that the SEC West is. Kirby took over Georgia with a loaded roster that didn't have the portal and in a devision that was a paper tiger.

A contract like that puts some in a position that they’d rather get fired.
I don’t think he even tried honestly. That was his retire early plan.
It's Jimbo's strategy
Beating Bama twice in the last 11 years has cost A&M over 100 million dollars in buyouts
They also had a pretty big win over Florida in the 2020-21 season. Florida lost to national champ Bama by 4 points that season in the SEC ship game. Crazy that AnM has been able to win some big games but lose to FCS schools lol

FSU fans tried to tell y’all but we were called bitter and angry
@@Mott2y'all didn't get the same guy we got. Jimbo was a really good coach from 2010-2014. He came in and immediately turned our program around. Recruited at an elite level right now from the jump. He's the one who built that roster that won 29 games in a row from 2012-2014. It wasn't just Jameis. That 2013 was one of the best CF teams ever. That is often overlooked in this conversation about Jimbo. That team was absolutely stacked from top to bottom. No weakness. Every single starter on that team on both sides of the ball went pro. Go look up those names. Anyway, just want to point that out. That not only did he recruit a monster roster. But he was a good coach back then. But starting in 2015 things started to go off the rails. At the time you couldn't see it. Now in hindsight it's so clear. 2015-2016 Dalvin Cook won us a BUNCH of games that we really would have lost if it wasn't for that one guy. He bailed us out over and over I remember. Made Jimbo look alot better than he really was. And then 2017 everything just went completely off. That's the year Francois got hurt in the opener and the season just went to shit. And that's the year Jimbo left us high and dry. Quit recruiting early on that season. It's like he mentally checked out and didn't care. And for that I always despised Jimbo. He didn't have to do his like that. Set us up on a bad trajectory that took half a decade to crawl out of. But...I will always thank Jimbo for what he did when he started here. If it wasn't for him we wouldn't have come back to prominence. He made us elite again. Gave us a national championship. I will forever be grateful. It's amazing how things have turned out. But again...A&M never got that coach that we got. The real good Jimbo. By the time he got to A&M his best years were well behind him
@@Mott2 during Jimbo's final years at FSU, his recruiting on the O-Line was so horrible that we were converting D-Linemen to play O-Line.
The fans didn't hire him, Jenny. I assumed you knew that?
The Aggies AD, Ross Bjork, responsible for extending Fisher's contract in 2021, should have been fired on the spot as well. It's unbelievable. Bjork got away for free.
Agree. The Aggie $15 billion endowment can skew your thinking.
I bet Fisher's exit interview wasn't as entertaining as Coach O''s
I don’t miss those days lol this is exactly how he was at fsu but hey we didn’t have to fire him and owe him money so thanks

Notre Dame does NOT have top notch facilities.. the stadium is a decrepit dump

Mike Elko _might_ be good
A&M did not really start spending serious money on football until around 2012.
@@BigDave131 Don't EVEN act like every darn team wasn't cheating at the time. Some just lacked the "shine" for NCAA not to touch them
Historically, the Aggies weren't a huge school in terms of enrollment or resources.

Bear Bryant was still coaching and the Bear never made a million, in fact he stated that he did not believe he should make more than his boss the Chancellor of the University of Alabama.
Sounds like a MAJOR PRESSURE COOKER at A&M with the unrealistic "sure to step in and win immediately" attitude. Good Luck!

Great analysis Josh. But what an enormous blunder 76 mil.
Yeahh cuz it a bunch of old geezers are want yess people around them and hiring mediocre coaching would do differently

Early national signing day is why they had to cut ties before the season ended
Coach has been decided. Announcement eminent. Probably in later part of week. Was a part of national championship Longhorns. SEC coaching at Florida South Carolina Auburn Alabama Georgia NFL and more. Spoiler allert. The new 12th man and skipper for the Aggies is the BOOM. Yes coach BOOM. Ready or not here comes the BOOM. Yes William MUSCHAMP.
If you want to win consistently you cant let a handful of boosters dictate every move you make. A&M has resources, but those resources have strings attatched that make the whole situation tenuous in regard to running a major college football program. It's a good job because of the money, but also a bad job for the same reason.
This nails it on the head.
A&M hasn’t won the SEC West like ever.
Spot on. These people were saying the same thing about Georgia.
A&M didn't get the same guy we got. By the time he got to A&M his best years were well behind him
he did inherit a decent amount from Bobby Bowden in 2010 and there is a credible argument that after the Bowden legacy in recruiting expired post 2013, it allowed for the rapid rise of Clemson.
12 class was Bobby's class
Jamies made fsu great not jimbo. That's why he hasn't won ever since
Love the take on why A&M hasn't been successful due to coaching and internal reasons.
Texas A&M is a great job and if they go out and hire the right guy, not even Texas joining the SEC will be able to stop them.

IMO, A&M has the same thing holding it back as Texas and Auburn. Namely a culture of meddling boosters running things and making all the decisions. All that money might be nice but all that money meddles and wants to have its way. All that money means the football coach and the AD are never truly in charge.
The A&M job is not that great because of the ridiculous expectations, location, & and not knowing how to be a real premier program
Am I the only aggie that thinks firing Jimbo is a mistake?
Idk im not an A&M Fan but probably so 😂..Honestly it’s going to depend who they have lined up to replace him. Also it’s going to also depend what the expectations are and it seems like it’s to compete for championships which is going to be really hard in the SEC with Saban/Smart. They are going to want to bring in someone who can compete with both and IDK who that would even be.
yep that's pretty much my thoughts. Most of the games we lost this season were by less than a touchdown, I think some of our fans need to get real about what it means to compete in the SEC. That team talent ranking chart is wild. Four teams in the top 10 in talent are a combined 26-15. The other six only have a combined 5 loses.

A&M has grown into becoming a top tier destination. It was not always a top job. Just like Nebraska falling from a top tier destination
