Here in Namibia we have a healthy leopard population. You hardly ever see one outside of the national parks, as they are shy and largly nocternal cats. If you move in the veld often as I do, you find a lot of tracks. Until a couple of years ago I worked a job that took me to many parts of the country in rural and farming areas. There are free leopard in all parts of the country except the far western Namib desert. More in the central and north than the south. I have also found tracks in the hills around the capital city Windhoek, once about 500 meters from a major shopping centre. I believe that in many parts of Africa they are threatened, but I dont think in Namibia and Botswana. Also from what farmers have told me, it is not all leapord that hunt livestock.

I wonder how there are that many subspecies of leopards in the world, even though they were all except javan, sri lankan and zanzibar leopard not separated by sea and had a continuous inland range according to the maps. How is that possible? Same with many other mammals like wolves, brown bears etc...

Here I got something, this is from the Wikipedia of North American Beaver
      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_American_beaver#Subspecies
At one time, 25 subspecies of beavers were identified in North America, with distinctions based primarily on slight morphological differences and geographical isolation at the time of discovery. However, modern techniques generally use genetics rather than morphology to distinguish between subspecies, and currently the Integrated Taxonomic Information System (which provides authoritative[78] taxonomic information on plants, animals, fungi, and microbes of North America and the world) does not recognize any subspecies of C. canadensis, though a definitive genetic analysis has not been performed. Such an analysis would be complicated by the fact that substantial genetic mixing of populations has occurred because of the numerous reintroduction efforts intended to help the species recover following extirpation from many regions.

And another thing that even though the range is continuous, the populations were isolated from each other,
You see, in Indonesia almost every island has its unique language and about 1300 ethnicities for its islands all separated by sea (total about 800 languages)
But in India, each state has its unique language even though the states are not isolated from each other.
      Each language has various dialects
And each district or province in each state has its different and a unique accent for its dialect of that particular language
And in some complex cities, each neighbourhood has its own accent of a language
And India has more than 2000 ethnicities with 4 major families of languages with no mountain isolation between 2 major groups
We humans have so many different ethnicities where we have lived since ages like in Europe, Africa, India, China, even though our range was continuous. This has to be true for animals too

It has an easy answer. Leopards have perhaps the largest distribution range of any wild cat. They are found from the lower tip of the African continent to the edge of Asia in the Amur region and Java on the other side. In between, there are all ranges of habitats .... from woodlands to Savanah, to thick forests and deserts and then the mighty Himalayas to ice-bound Siberia. In all this evolutionary history they changed and adapted themselves to their habitats and diest. Contrary to your question I wonder why common leopards have so much fewer subspecies (once there were over 27, 28 considered as valid), and especially African leopard which now is considered only a single subspecies.

I daydream of odd things. I'd love to have a 1,000 square mile island longer than it is wide (kinda shaped like California) 2/3 above the equator 1/3 below with a mountain range in the 6,000 to 10,000 foot class on the western coast going the length of the island. I would terraform it to be a unique ecosystem, but I would only use existing species of plants and animals, nothing extinct. I would have combinations of plants and animals that don't occur naturally but that would complement each other and make a very smooth functioning food chain. Red Stag, roe deer, American Bison, American alligator, small game native to the southeastern United States such as bobwhite quail, cottontail rabbit, gray squirrel, raccoon, possum, gray fox, Great Lakes wolves, Eurasian brown bear, Eurasian wild boar, bobcat, black jaguar, and South China Tiger. Probably have mountain goat in the mountains etc. I have lots of ideas, that's just a partial list. The climate would range from tropical in the bottom 1/3 slowly switching to deciduous temperate in the North. Of course plant and animal life would vary throughout the island depending on the climate and ecosystem present in different parts. I would be king of the island and there would be a small human population that lived off of the land and in tune with nature in this pristine Paradise. Ethical and responsible hunting would be allowed and game and Predator numbers would be managed to keep the island thriving.

1000 square mile island is much to small area my friend to host such large animals. That's around 2560 km2 and to have animals like jaguars and Tigers you need much larger area. Highest density of jaguar for example in the Pantanal is around 10.3 per 100km2 so you would only have a population of 260 cats. 50 is the bare minimum to avoid inbreeding but to have a healthy population which isn't in danger of being wiped out from diseases you need more than 500. And to have a topography of 6000 to 10,000 feet is far to much for such a small island, it's sides will be at a sharp angel and to steep for some forms of vegetation. If you want to have such a dream, dream of a small but not to small sized island like maybe the 11,000km2 Hawaii, or 36,000km2 Taiwan or even maybe my own home country Sri Lanka at 65,650km2. Such amounts sound big but on a world map are very small. My home island have quite a few species of unique megafauna like Sri Lankan Leopard, Sri Lankan Sloth Bear, Sri Lankan Elephant, Sambhar deer of several sub species in lowlands and montane and Water Buffalo. But in the past it had 2 species of Rhino, Lions, Tigers, Cheetah, Wild Dogs, 6 tusked Hippo. Even Taiwan had some quite interesting megafauna until about 10,000 years ago.

Sri Lankan Leopards get quite big too. I'm from there and have studied them for several years, and I personally talked to a ranger who did a study in 1990 with a German science student and they weighed a leopard at 93kg. Sadly it wasn't put into records as most things aren't in such a corrupt and did orderly country. I also talked to a farmer fro. Hatton who claimed to have shot a leopard who weighed at 100kg and found another case where a leopard shot in Namal Oya in 1950 weighed at 113kg. The last two should be taken with a grain of salt as people tend to exaggerate. But the average weight records we still use are old and were done by Sir Deraniyagala in 1920 with the data sample being 7 males and largest at 77kg and average at 56kg. Such a sample is too small. The two credible weights as of now are a black panther at 72kg and a Gal Oya leopard at 86kg. It shows that the old average is wrong. Due to protection of both the leopards and there prey sources they have grown is size and genetic strength which is a trend we have seen in lots of healthy populations of predators and Sri Lanka is no different. I believe the heaviest official leopard is a Persian at 95kg and unofficial is again a Persian Leopard at 115kg. I believe the Sri Lankan Leopard has as much right for the title of largest leopards on earth as the Persian Leopards and Congolese Leopards of Africa.
