- In this video we visit the amazing Ruthven Barracks', Badenoch just off the A9 near Kingussie.
These barracks are the best preserved of 4 barracks built in 1719 after the 1715 Jacobite Rising. Built on a old castle mount.
They were destroyed by the Jacobites following their retreat after the Battle of Culloden 16th April 1746. The day after the battle of Culloden approx 3,000 Jacobites gathered here and waited until Charles Edward Stewart or as we know him Bonnie Prince Charlie sent word. Whichn eventually came on the 20th April which stated "Let every man seek his own safety in the best way he can"
Free car parking and free entry
The barracks ruins are maintained as a schedule monument by Historic Environment Scotland and open all year.

Two years hard graft building that I would imagine but still am impressive sight and great views from there as well. I always like to touch those old walks in a place like that too and I swear you can feel the history. Not that keen on having to share two in a bed there mind or a night in the prison cells either. Well worth a look around and brilliant weather too, cheers Alan

Good morning guys what a wonderful location for the barracks. Definitely a great place to see any marauders. Loved highland Boo good to get in the spirit of the holiday. A bit cramped in there must have been cosy. We love exploring old ruins always great to imagine what it must have been like. The beer and whisky was a good price mind you guess that was a lot back in the day. A big 👍 from us really interesting enjoyed looking around. Hope you have a great Monday. Great to have a look at the ruins of the barracks. I have passed by many times years ago but never stopped off for a closer look. Great look around. Boo looks very smart with her tartan. There is more at the site than I realised. (A Gill = a quarter of a pint). We are hoping the get travelling again soon. It might well be Scotland and it might be an opportunity for a look. Hello lovelies! This was awesome and see you are wearing the new mics! We always wear the furry wind muffs they are tricky to put on but make such a difference! Those darn Jacobites 😂 loved this ❤️

Yes we are wearing the new mics, this was really our 1st proper go with them.💗 we should have put the fluffy bits on to be honest with the wind.
Morgs put the fluffy bit on his mic a few days after. You're right they are a bit tricky to get on.

This is on our List of places to visit on our way up.
The hill didn't look high until.you came back down then you could really see how high it was.

I’m sure I’ve driven passed here but haven’t ever stopped there before. Interesting to have a look around the ruins, I’m not sure I could share a room with that many people lol 😅 great stops off

You can see it as you drive on the A9 so I'm sure you will have driven past it.
We were the same driven past it a few times so did some research to what it was, when we realised we had to plan it into our summer 🏴 adventures.
It was such a fascinating place to walk round.

Did you plan Ruthven Barracks as part of your itinerary or did you just stumble upon it? It's an amazing piece of history and perhaps one that normal tourists miss.

We drove past it on a previous trip up to Scotland (it's just off the A9) and was curious to what it was so we did some research and planned it into our summer 24 itinerary.
So glad we did. It has so much history. I think you're right a lot of people probably do miss it.
