I wonder if any consolidation treatment can be done to wood in this sort of situation give it strength again. Similar to how airy substances can be given rigidity using resin impregnation. If it weren’t so energy intensive to keep a large area at freezing temperatures, maybe a large wooden structure like Vasa could have been kept at a certain level of water saturation, and then frozen to give the wooden structure extra strength like pykrete has.

Water expands when frozen so wood under water saturation would get crushed from the inside out. Resin impregnated wood is a better idea I think.

At some moment you're going to have to replace pieces of wood. It is a perishable material after all. But I think if you manage to keep the shape intact it will still be Wasa. Buildings are restored like that and nobody suggests that after thoughtful restoration it has become something else.

True. On the oldest wooden building Horyuji temple, some of the wood, especially exposed rain was perished and replaced with 根継 矧木 or 埋木 techniques. Repair carpenter has been attached to the building from the ancient time, full re-assembling is done in 400 year cycle.

maybe they could do that - new oak wetted for 20 years then filled with the same conserv agent dried and put to place
