    My favourite call back from the show is in this episode. At 3:25 when the two interns walk in to quiz each other, Boon (the male intern) says "Slaggy, you're up."
    This is a reference to Season 6, Episode 7 "His Story IV". Dr. Kelso gets frustrated with learning everyone's names, so he decides to just call all the guys Dave and the girls Debbie. One of the girls happily says "Debbie actually is my name." To which Dr. Kelso says, "Then, out of fairness to the others, you will be Slagathor. Daves, Debbies, Slagathor: I will be in my office. If you need anything, feel free to bother Dorian."
    That girl from "His Story IV" is the female intern in "My Princess" that Boon still calls Slaggy/Slagathor.

      @JessTheMD if you're looking for a short series to check out, try Dead Like Me. Two seasons, goes through the expanse of emotions, some cringe moments, but such a beautiful show. Great cast, great characters, wonderful writing, great stories. This isn't a spoiler because the narrator says this right in the intro, but it starts with the death of an 18 year old woman and follows her journey through undeath in life. The end of the pilot is beautiful.

    I hope your recovery is going well, Doctor Jess.
    I really like this episode. The fairytale setting is a fun twist, and I think it’s a subtle way of showing a difference between a gentler smart ass Daddy Cox and sarcastic tough loving Doctor Cox. The way he kind of struggles at times to keep things rooted in the fairytale is really funny to me. It sort of reminds me of times my son has asked an awkward question, and I want to give him a truthful answer, but maybe not the whole truth. I also like to think that since whimsy isn't natural for Doctor Cox, it's something he learned from being JD’s doctor daddy. That would be a very relatable experience for me. The biggest thing I've learned from being a parent is patience, but the seeds for that patience were first sown while I was working at an after school program, helping kids with their math homework.
    My son is going to be 14 in a month and a half, and so far, my experience “figuring out” parenting has been kind of like buying him clothes. I find a great outfit, then turn around, and BAM, he’s outgrown the pants so we have to find new pants. We get the pants fixed, but Uh Oh, the shoes don't fit now.
    His mom isn't part of our lives, and he has a genetic condition called Fragile X Syndrome, but overall I think that just made it a little harder for me to find his first good metaphorical outfit, and he’s stayed fixated on certain things since he's been two, so once I found it, keeping up with it has probably been easier with him. I'm using movie and TV relationships as my point of comparison though; I don't actually have any friends that are parents to share anecdotes with. I have a dog, and the comments section of UA-cam.
    The ending is kind of a bummer, but I feel like it does emphasize how Daddy Cox is more considerate and thoughtful about Jack's feelings. Doctor Cox would just slam JD with cold, hard, sarcastic facts, and then maybe help pick up the pieces of his shattered little heart.
    Great video, and I hope you're feeling better.

    One thing I never noticed before is that JD in real life quoted Cox saying "remember what you heard, when you weren't even listening." So why are JD and Elliott still trying to find a diagnosis after their shift, he knew what it was really early on, at least in terms of the episode...

    • @johndaily263
      @johndaily263 8 місяців тому +1

      Yeah, that always bothered me.

    • @trrerid
      @trrerid 8 місяців тому +2

      Yeah, i wish they had left that part in Cox's fictional telling. Everything that happened in the story is just a story he's telling after. He very specifically and deliberately does not mention the ring in the real world.
      My only guess is that he knew a day's difference wouldn't change her prognosis.

    • @vadalia3860
      @vadalia3860 8 місяців тому +9

      In "real life" JD told Elliot "I just remembered something, I was barely listening..." as they were looking for a diagnosis in the medical textbooks. Cox was still at the hospital after they diagnosed her so presumably JD & Elliot related to him how they figured out that it was Wilson's disease- JD had overheard the interns talking about it earlier in the day & eventually remembered that. Then Cox took that story home to his kid & inserted his knight character into the story giving the princess & fool the clue they needed when in "real life" Cox had nothing to do with them getting to the diagnosis. Probably it was also to alleviate some guilt Cox had because he was also in the room when the interns were talking about Wilson's disease and presumably he also missed picking up on that's what was going on with the patient. So in the kid's story, Cox was the hero who knew the answer all along & was just helping the princess and fool save the maiden in time, when really Cox likely partially blames himself for not remembering the same thing JD eventually did, but early enough to save the patient's life instead of too late.

    • @TheMrfluffi
      @TheMrfluffi 8 місяців тому +2

      @@vadalia3860 double checked, in real life JD repeats what dr Cox said, word for word, then asks "what does that even mean" while sitting with Elliott and a bunch of text books. They clearly don't have a diagnosis yet, but for that specific clue to make sense Dr Cox would have to have already worked out it was Wilson's disease. In the real world JD is shown checking for the ring to confirm the diagnosis, which also wouldn't make sense if Dr Cox already diagnosed her. Either Dr Cox worked it out and for some reason they kept researching, at the hospital, long after both their shifts ended and did an unnecessary check of her eyes or he worked it out but did nothing leaving them to work it out too. Pretty sure it's just a mistake in the script they didn't catch but never noticed it before.

    • @macmcleod1188
      @macmcleod1188 7 місяців тому

      Cox is telling the story after the fact when he knows how J.D. remembered the diagnosis.
      Since he knows how it turned out and it's a magical story, he turns it into a semi prophecy.
      In real life, he didn't know, he didn't keep it a secret, and he didn't give them a clue.
      Ah, now I see someone else already posted that. Never mind. 😊

    Fun fact, season 7 was the time of the 2007/8 writer's strike, which is why it only has 11 episodes.
    I'm also pretty sure it's why Kelso is still chief of medicine in this episode, despite it being 2 episodes after the one Kelso retires (My Dumb Luck) as it was a great episode for the season finale.

    I remember a House episode with an atypical presentation of schizophrenia that was eventually figured out to be Wilson's -- atypical due to the patient's age which was a bit advanced for schizophrenia. Not unheard of, but atypical. I detected no loss of energy on your part, so please keep on doing whatever you're doing in recovery. Remember the words of the philosopher Dylan: "Nothing is better, nothing is best, take care of your health and get plenty of rest."

    Because I have fatigue issues I have read a number of books. One that I read talked about people who ate really good having fatigue problems that seemed to have no cause. The doctor who did the research figured out that people who eat a lot of whole grains tend to get an excess of copper and because they stay away from red meats they tend to get less zinc which normally offsets the copper. I think of that when watching this episode.

    Wait a sec.
    I've watched this episode a few times before, and I NEVER noticed that the male intern calls the female intern "Slaggy".
    Dr Kelso was too lazy to remember the names of all the new interns, so he named all the female interns Debbie (I don't remember what he called the male interns). But her real name is Debbie, since called her Slagathor.
    This means that name stuck, AND it stuck to the point they gave her a nickname.
    That's amazing!

    Fun thing, fatigue can cause blackouts. Lucky story that was funny because no one got hurt. I remember hitting my exit to the customer, which was still maybe 25 miles from the exit. I woke up at the customer in a panic, having no idea where I was. I checked the truck's computer and I somehow managed to get to the customer. That 25 miles I have no memory of. Queue Gandalf I have no memory of this meme. 27 years of dealing with fatigue. Good times.
