Yes, many people say they should listen without seeing, but this is the first reaction I have seen implement it. The video was great; very enjoyable! (Getting in my daily dose of tears writing these comments.)
Ivan Mendez was Angelina's (12y) guitarist in LA in 2018. In an interview with Alan Papier on his UA-cam channel, Ivan told the story of how the cover's came about. In a nutshell "Angelina doesn't have a wish list of songs, she decides spontaneously if she likes a song. After hearing a song she says great song and has downloaded the lyrics. OK, well, let's start ". Then the cover was recorded in one take, Angelina sang the song here for the first time after her arrangement without rehearsing beforehand. 💯 *AJ* 💯

@@ashlenamusicYou may come to believe, as I and some vocal coaches do, that Angelina’s compositions come from her subconscious. They simply spill out as she sings through a song. She has a natural feel for what notes, timing, inflections, and other embellishments sound best. She has self-studied and practiced enough to assemble a large toolbox at her disposal. (By age 6 she had vibrato and by age 9 could control its speed.)

Little difference. Ivan came over after working a day job in a downtown office. He's only a part time musician. Often his only direction from AJ was "just follow me".

One thing to understand is that when they record these sessions, they may play it through once and then record it. She is 12 years old here. Yes, she is still reading the lyrics. Appreciate your reaction. You could stand to turn the volume up some. I had to turn my volume all the way up to hear the playback and your mic volume wasn't that high either, but when the commercials came on they practically broke my eardrums. LOL.

Her “not projecting” is actually her choice. Where as Adele basically belts the high note section, Angelina chooses to hold back at times which gives the performance more depth and emotion. Because of that, I actually prefer Angelina’s version to Adele’s original.
Regarding looking nervous, I’ve never got that impression at all. Angelina has said that she never gets nervous, even performing in front of large audiences. Performing is what makes her happy. She says singing is like breathing for her. So I don’t think she would be nervous during a home recording. At age 12 here she has already been recording for 6 years.
She also has never lacked confidence, even at 7 years old during her Norway’s Got Talent audition. You can see her confidence as she calmly answers the judges questions. If you see something that may seem as lack of confidence it could be that she isn’t too familiar with the lyrics.
This recording as with most of her home recordings was done in one take with no real rehersal. She chooses a song, downloads the lyrics if she’s not familiar with them, discusses with the guitarist (Ivan Mendez in this case) how she wants to do the song, he quickly learns the song if he’s not familiar with it then she says “follow me” and then they record. Pretty remarkable when you think about it. Especially at 11 and 12 when she did these home recordings.
I agree. I do think some people expect AJ to arrange songs the same way but she emphasizes different parts.

Portsmouth she’s in Portsmouth New Hampshire doing a giant contact Ricks stadium there gonna be thousands of people there to hear her saying she has a massive fan club I’m one of them and watching say one and a half singer jazz but now she can say anything she wants to any song to type but now they’re gonna be 1000 people to hear her saying international fan club which I belong to there on my Facebook page we are adorable. I’m just cause you’re good singer I said it before because right humanitarian raise millions of dollars for children’s charity environmental causes your great right person but I really tender heart. Ashlena, Guitarist Ivan Mendez was featured in this video with Angelina (12yrs old) and other Jam sessions at her home in LA during 2018. One other video shot during this period is a must went they recorded "STAY," which is one of my favorite videos.
I think after some years, musicians clued in that they’re included in the history of a prodigy and will also be seen by millions over the years. You can see it on the faces of big bands and orchestras through her early and prolific years before signing on to republic at 14 with a library of 140 covers.

The summer of 12 year old Angie with Ivan are some of my favorites. Both make mistakes. But the recordings are just so spontaneous and real. His reactions to her are real. I enjoyed your take on this performance. Knowing this artist quite well I would make these comments. Angelina never gets nervous,. I think what you detected was the fact that she did not know the song and had to read the lyrics. And yes, she went for some low notes that were beneath her range. That was just due to her age.

When a singer goes into history, all they always have the notes in front of the cheap music is this common they have it right in front of them. They read it. They sang it to make sure they don’t mess up. She’s doing it with the phone. this is same difference she can rick look at the song see the words and then it is bringing out in emotions and feelings. How she does it. I don’t know I’ve been watching since she’s one and a half years of age she always fascinates me what she can do with music do you child prodigy again I said she plays several instruments in English not a first language, but she sounds American right now she’s living in Los Angeles California and she say republic records age of 14 now she’s 17 now in real time January 10, 2024. She’ll be 18.

That cover is one of her many home recordings. Those recordings are by no means perfect, but I think she shows great potential here. Compared to Adele's live performance I personally think that Angelina sang the chorus even more beautifully than Adele, but that's just my personal opinion. I know it sounds crazy that everybody praises a 12 year old kid, but somehow that kid manages to move so many people with her singing.

Angelina, I like to think, chose to not project more to provide more emotion. For me, it's like she is crying and singing at the same time. I think it fits the song very well.

@@ashlenamusicI am pretty sure that Angelina has learned later how to sing intentionally with a crying voice; but like everything she sings, she will not do it to show off that ability. She will use it only as necessary to convey the emotion appropriate to the song’s message.

I have been watching Angelina Jordan since she was one and a half years of age now she’s 17. I’ve watched all those years I know great wonderful I love this young girl I’ve called she can saying well go to the great humanitarian. She’s collected millions of dollars for children’s charities around the world. She won’t get on stage with shoes on because you made of young girl when she lives living in a and she did not know what party was a gram of the international porn artist and psychologist and she did not know what party was. She never seen it there by and families got money, so come across a little girl we live in a release for a while, and I ran and she saw a Girls I have shoes on and they tore some people can’t afford clothes and shoes so she went over to talk to her grandma total language to her and she asked her why she well. I want to be a doctor about my find my my mama father got killed and I’ve got to do the way people to make money to pay for my siblings food. Shoes away and she won’t step on stage until all children in the world has shoes and clothes and food. I'm not sure her apparent hesitancy was due to shyness, more likely because this was a first run-through and she wasn't confident of the precise phrasing or lyrics. This was one of her many impromptu sessions at home which we have on video. If you want live, there are many concerts to choose from. There's the Allsang por Grensen, Proysenfestivalen, and last but not least, her concert with the Forsvarets Stabsmusikkorps (she's Norwegian, in case you haven't guessed), along with several charity concerts and TV appearances. She may be a child here but she's no amateur!

I really think you need to listen to some more of Angelina's 150 or so musical presentations before you prematurely judge her. She is the most gifted female vocalist on the planet right now. She can sing ANYTHING and do it flawlessly.

12 here. Yup these were all done live in 1 Take (often reading lyrics just off camera and rearranging song live too) unless the guitarist made a mistake so her LA and Norway guitar folk said when interviewed. They're a lot of videos from around this time frame with just a guitarist. All worth hearing.
That's NUTS and makes a ton of sense why she constantly was reading the lyrics, but just LISTENING to this performance I couldn't tell
Only time that Angelina has ever struggled is when she sang a song after her grandfather passed.
For your information, if you would have had the volume turned up you would have know AJ had no problem hitting the lower notes.

Song by Lana Del Ray known for use of the low register. Ivan is tryna keep it together and not forget to play. Mexican talent who worked with her when she moved to LA at 14. But I think they worked at her home in Norway like here when she was 12. Others know better than me what the timeline is.
These days she can pull off lower notes. Try Suspicious Minds. Insane. Also How Great Thou Art in the style of Elvis. It’s crazy. She has been working on low register at least since she was 9 with I Put A Spell On You. She has clocked time on it and developed good strategies for it.
Also I am not certain about this but AJ tends to go with the first take so this is what you’re listening to.

She's is essential Norwegian/English bilingual...along with Swedish,Farsi, and Japanese. Her English is perfect. When she speaks the only accent you hear is an American Midwest accent. As far as projection, she purposely holds back. If you want projection, " All l ask, The Show Must go On, and especially Whitney Houston's l Have Nothing.
Sometimes I hear a little Southern accent pop up, but don’t know what could be the influence.
The Midwestern accent is sometimes referred to as ‘broadcast English’ because TV professions were instructed to use it.

There is an interview out there with Mendez(Guitar player) he said that most of these vids are one takes decided on minutes before had. When she is looking over to the side she is reading the words to the song.

You may want to limit how many songs are in an ‘album’ or ‘concert’ because Angelina has the stamina to sing a set of 18 songs nonstop, as demonstrated last summer.

Ashlena, I see that you are very thoughtful and involved in your reactions and perceptions, and those of us who are long time Angelina fans really appreciate that. Though there are things you need to know about this singer that you can only see as you dip into her body of work. Her first time in the studio she was 6 years old and there is a video of that, and since 6 years old she has won a national contest and Norway which is Norway's got talent which you may be aware of. Between that time and the time she made this video, which she is at that point 12 years old, see has become a consummate virtuoso at singing. As I'm sure some of the people who have commented before me have let you know that she doesn't hold back she interprets, and that is her artistic expression not a lack of confidence. If it is one thing that this girl has had since she was very little, it is a overabundance of confidence. In order for you to fully understand her artistry you have to expose yourself to more of her young work. What I would suggest to you, like some of the others, that if you want to see confidence in this singer when she is 9 years old you need to go to her site and listen to "I put a spell on you" the black and white version. There she is in a studio fully prepared, though she is still reading her lyrics, and fully rehearsed. There you will see what confidence she had at nine even 3 years before she was 12 in this video. She is a brilliant artist and everything she does is deliberate in her expression. Thank you for your beautiful reaction it was impressive.

Great ear, Ashlena. Agree with your comments entirely. AJ was in fact reading the lyrics in this performance, as I'm sure others will let you know. At 12, this song definitely challenges her lower range. She definitely progresses as the song develops and she feels the impact of the lyrics. And as for her hair -- it's always been as rich as her voice . . . .

This was either the first or second time they played this song. All of the videos her and Ivan or her and Egil were all extemporaneous. They would get together and just start talking about songs they know, and then try some. Also, the softness of the sound is a stylistic choice, not a lack of confidence.
I wasn't mad at the softness of it, her voice is gorgeous. I can just tell that she has a powerhouse voice and she chose not to use it for this song. You have to remember I don't know this artist very well so I don't know what her voice is capable of, hence why I wanted to hear her belt. The lack of confidence was more of knowing the song well than her singing voice.

in studio where numerous 'takes' can be done. That's not the case
with Angelina, for she's been singing complete songs on stage in
unison with no musical accompaniment since she was 7. A top exec
at Stargate said in all his years, he could only name three singers
who could produce a 'production ready' song in 'one take' and they
are Beyonce, Sam Smith.......and Angelina.

@@ashlenamusic Apparently she booked AJ herself so she will have known exactly what she sounded like..brave move for Norah! Also a very kind move for Norah and trusting too given the size of the audience..she must have had supreme faith in Angelina’s abilities..even at 11!
Angelina certainly lacked confidence when she was younger. There are several live performances where she fidgets and plays with her ear during instrumental breaks or, to be seen to be doing something relevant, self-consciously slaps her thigh or taps her feet. However, all of this goes away the instant she is back in her zone, a zone she describes as endless, when she is singing. So much so that I worry about her because I seriously doubt that her voice gets any down time. I've seen singers who refused to even speak beyond a whisper leading up to a performance. Yet here's a singer happy to belt out songs on the street, in random parking garages, in the car on the way to the studio and again on the journey home again.
Where she has seemed less than confident, it's either because she is not happy with something or, as here, she is singing a song unrehearsed. Clearly, here she is learning the cadence of the lyrics on the fly and maybe she has realised she could have chosen a different key but, likely as not according to her accompanist, they are doing the song for the first and only time and only because it's one of only a few they are both familiar with or deem simple enough to learn quickly.
One thing Angelina is not is a perfectionist. She has never produced trash but, if she did, she would happily upload it. Hence, whatever issues she had here and in other videos have never inspired her to redo them. This makes me curious how she will deal with producers who still aren't happy after 23 takes. It's as well that the one who went public when Angelina was 14 said she has usually nailed it in a couple of takes. Though she will undoubtedly come across others who love to meddle, they may be forced to repent their sins should Anger-lina make an appearance.
I'm literally being yelled at in the comments that she has never lacked confidence LOL I'm like she's 9! Of course, she is allowed to have her moments. Just because she has confidence now doesn't mean she always felt that way.

@@ashlenamusic Yes, Angelina fans (and I am one of seven years standing) are nothing if not zealous and some react wildly if they sense a mere hint that anyone has affronted her. When she was younger, she once said she doesn't ever get nervous and, even though I believe this to have been true at the time, for some this has somehow become true for every performance since and forever more. Certainly she has shown no fear, is happy to tackle any genre in an assortment of styles and is intimidated by no singer's reputation. Nor has she displayed any reticence to completely reconstruct highly ingrained song arrangements. However, as Angelina performs on bigger stages and for bigger stakes, her composure may take a knock even if some of her fanbase will doggedly cling to her youthful and carefree declaration.

This was the coldest, most emotionless reaction of this performance I think exists on youtube. Sorry if that was too harsh, but more reactor cry than anything else. This was just a demo with no mixing or studio at 12, yet her vocals touched so many. Just my observation or opinion.

I'm from Canada so if you're not from Canada you have an accent, that's just a thing.
And I felt she had some nervousness due to not knowing the lyrics, but again I definitely could be wrong!
@@ashlenamusic I'm also from Canada and that's the first I've heard "that's just a thing". Maybe because a quarter of our population is foreign born?? Anyway, in videos from the age of 5, she speaks
English just like any American kid. No trace of accent.....As for being nervous, Angelina doesn't do nerves. When you see her AGT performance, live on the biggest stage in the world, she opens her unique arrangement of Bohemian Rhapsody a cappella, pitch perfect. Cool as a cucumber.

Most of us from English speaking countries generally acknowledge that there's an "accentless" English, which we hear spoken by most news broadcasters in Canada and the U.S. Some liken it to a mid-western American accent; but it's basically untraceable; unlike the English spoken in Australia, Britain, South Africa. When many people first hear Angelina, they think that she has an accent, especially since she's Norwegian. After listening to more of her catalogue, though, they learn how she plays with the words, bending and shaping them, elongating or flattening vowels, dropping consonants, adding twang or rasp or gravel, all conscious stylistic decisions to create the sounds she wants to produce. Never mind accent, some even question at times if the words she's singing are English!....Btw, I'm from T.O. You?
