Just about any lake in sweden. Summer months pools are empty, everyone is "wild swimming". Way less restrictions than UK. How about a brighter GTN cap? Black is boring and a brighter cap would be safer. Great video, learnt lots.
I stay in the Northern Territory in Australia.. Our main swimming rivers are only "safe" for swimming during the dry season. After every wet season, when the water levels start to drop, they set traps to catch the saltwater crocs. But you still have to brave the calmer and less aggressive freshwater crocs. Always a fun thought that you are sharing the water with them.
I was inspired by this video, so this morning I went to my local river here in Manchester. I found the water to be warmer next to the pipes, not sure what comes out of them but it gives a nice rainbow effect on the surface. I wear my shoes to protect my feet from all the broken glass and try to find an area which has less syringes on the ground for entering and exiting the water. Due to the colour of the water it can be difficult to see some of the obstacles beneath like shopping trolleys and stolen motorbikes but can be fun trying to avoid all the floating debris like empty beer cans, plastic bags and condoms. It's nice to get out and be amongst nature but I remain cautious around the big rats and use my lighter to burn off the leaches that attach to my body. I'm not feeling so good at the moment but as soon as I do, I'm going back for more. Great video, thanks
I also never considered the distinction between open water and wild swimming. The only time I swam OW with supervision was in competitions. Otherwise, it was always in whatever lake or river I was at. Typically, I also swim alone since not many of my friends are interested in swimming in cold rivers and lakes!
Not being able to see the bottom creeps me out a little because I'm used to staring at a black line. Oh and stepping on mossy rocks and getting tangled in weeds. XD
Throughout the video, I couldnt help but admire how lean and ripped the professor is. This guy is the perfect specimen. (Scientist, Olympian, European and World Championship podium places, OWS advocate, amazing physique)
Archipelagio in western Sweden is lovely, One tip is to acclimatize for 10 min before the swim in shallow water if its cold (sub 18 celcius). Its easy to panic when its cold and the water makes it hard to breath
Fishing lines and occasional ceraria are additional issues where I swim. An aggressive swan (because I was about to enter the water where his delicious waterveggies were swimming) on the other hand, is pretty cool to meet.
I am very confused... I've always thought there's no difference between OW swimming and wild swimming, but apparently I've been doing the latter all my life. I don't really understand why it's such a big deal either. Guess that's due to cultural differences: in Finland there's lakes and rivers everywhere, and people just swim in them, no lifeguards anywhere, and alone often as not. I'm just confused is all :D
I agree with you! Must be a cultural, society thing. Like seriously this video unnecessarily over complicating something that should NOT be complicated at all. Yes safety is important and necessary, but safety and the principles discussed come with a sound mind of common sense. This video was way too fear based, and the scientific facts discussed are taken from one stand point only. And 'yes' it's one of the greatest experiences of being close to nature as possible - why all the heavy focus on danger, whilst ruining something that is so freeing, beautiful and thrilling! Both open water swimming and ocean swimming can be very therapeutic, and can be treated more like an art and meditation, than a sport and seriously structured experience. Personally I allow myself to freely chose not to take this fear driven approach, which 99% of society is unconsciously built upon. Excuse my rant lol, I can sincerely understand where this gentleman is coming from, I do not agree with certain things mentioned and am unpleasantly frustrated when people over complicate things, and take life too seriously, particularly in settings it's not meant to be! There is no need and can cause further undue confussion, fear and misunderstanding towards certain areas (such as water, nature etc) as well as unfortunately feeding upon peoples doubts and anxieties. Keep that business in civilization, not in nature. Nature knows best, you just have to trust it, trust yourself, experience and learn along the way!
I think he's just covering himself for legal reasons as he's the spokesman for a society. I'm English and i've swum in lakes and rivers before, and the only thing i ever really worry about is cutting my feet on sharp stuff as i'm getting in or out. Never worried about flow rates or after drops or any of that other stuff.
OW usually refers to structured events with spotters, boats, etc for support and safety, in an environment that hat been "roped off" from other uses. Wild sfimming is OW swimming where you lack structured support and are in mixed use areas.
Moi, that is because Finnish are badass and if the weather is cold 3 more badass 👊🏻👊🏻👊🏻👊🏻👊🏻👊🏻👊🏻, and yes, certainly you have literally thousands of Lake in Finland👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 anyways to OW and Wild swimming is right the same.
Oooh was super interested in wild swimming when I saw a clip of Liz Ke's Wild Swim documentary. 😮😮 thinking of getting me a buoy and see where it takes me lol
Never knew swimming with out and life guard any just any body a water had a name... Over here in Florida USA we don't make much of the differnce between Pool, Open water and Wild swimming it's all the same to us... With great advice by the way I do find it odd you were never thought that stuff growing up like we are... It's a pretty important survival skill.
It used to be 'we're going swimming in the lake or river'. With this term 'wild swimming', you're just going to get asked where? Then once you disclose that you're just going swimming. I'm just off 'wild walking' today.
There is a lake in Nottingham called Colwick lake were in the summer we go swimming, but sometimes we can’t go because they mention about the algee content can someone please explain to me why the algee content is dangerous to swim in? I’m not going to drink it. And when I walk buy I don’t even see any algee?
Do you have any recommendations on "Cold open water swimming" particularly lake swims. I understand that lake swims "feel" colder that the ocean even at the same temp. I am doing the Ironman 70.3 in Indian Wells (USA) this December. I gather that the temp will likely be about 54degrees. Are gloves and boots legal in Ironman? I have a outdoor pool, which does dip down to around these temps in December. Will acclimatization to these temps help? Thanks
I've always noticed towards the end of open water swims my pinky fingers splay out uncontrollably- I thought it was cramp, but apparently I've been almost dieing of hypothermia all this time!!
Man, I would LOVE to do this but I am terrified of parasites and bacteria. How do these people not get sick, they must be swallowing some of the water doing freestyle?
If you exhale when you heads in the water you'll be fine. I normally get a dry mouth when open water swimming. Sometimes swallow a bit to cure the dryness 🤢 hasn't killed me yet 😂
I hate to say but this just seems to be unnecessarily over complicating things. I mean yes you could get hypothermia from swimming in a river, but you could also get hypothermia going for a jog, or standing and waiting for a bus. It's a very small risk and to make avoiding those tiny risks take up the bulk of the talk about how to do it is just disproportionate. The video sounded like a lecture to children on how dangerous it is to swim in rivers and not an explanation on how somebody interested in it could best get into it themselves.
Wild swimming, open water swimming... We used to call it just swimming... Damn, wtf is wrong with the world.... Nowadays everything is made look "special"... It's just swimming in a damn river.
Some rivers in England really arent good too swim in. It might look nice because there are rowers, or other users, but people usually end up in hospital due to difficulty or disease
@@PianoKwanMan I must live in a area with cleaner water the, because as long as its publicly accessible you can swim, with the exception of boat launches.
When rowing bow controls direction, checks etc and will tell us to stop rapidly if uncoxed, if we are in an 8 or 4+ etc... then the cox is usually pretty rapid at spotting things so if swimmers are there we spot them if they are wearing caps. Joint responsibility on the water between all users is the key.

Love the sea off the Dorset and Pembroke coasts.

All that effort to write that and just one like. I'll add the second.
Greg's physique is absolute goal. Guy is completely chiselled.

Thanks! We'll look into it 👍

From this definition, all my open water swims have been wild swims. How about a video for finding the best non-wild swimming areas?
What about those waterproof bags (for clothes and personal stuff) as a buoy? are they too "heavy"?
