Won a competition in college to play this with our wind ensemble. On the concert, I had the music opened up to the second movement when we started. Ended up playing the entire first movement from memory. Those were the days!
Woah! Thanks for this video. You did it just in time for all-state auditions, and I am truly grateful for this video because not only a professional is doing it but I have a role model to listen and practice this song to so I can prepare to learn this song. Would love to take lessons with you if you offer them.
One of my favorite solos for a high schooler, and one of their favorite to play. I usually have them molto retard before the last section... Pause.... , and then really take off with the tempo.
Hello Mr Sutherland, I would like to request if you can do a video explaining the difference between a 3/4 Tuba and a Full size tuba, does it matter if I can only play on a 3/4 at the moment due to budget issues. Thank you for all you do and hope to hear from you.
Hi! Sounds like a good topic! The bottom line is that the best tuba for you is the tuba you can afford and practice regularly. There is a lot of progress you can make on a 3/4 tuba for the time being, but I would definitely recommend upgrading once you have the money. Good luck!

That’s a great story! Yeah, been there. It’s amazing what we can accomplish under pressure!!
I’m playing this in high school. It’s seems very fun and I like the high c personally.
Wonderful! I am especially thankful that this is played on contrabass - makes for an even better reference for young musicians looking to play this!
That’s the idea! The other movements are coming soon
I played this for Command Performance for my state as a sophomore. Really bringing back memories here!
Congrats on that!
This is a wonderful reference recording, thank you for doing these videos.
Of course! Thanks for the kind words, Daniel
Sweet!!! This is awesome 👏👏
Thanks Noah!!
EXCELLENT!!!
Thank you!
Amazing!
Thanks!!
I still remember recording this for my AllState audition in your living room! 15 years ago! Great video Scott!
Yeah, Jason! I was so proud of your hard work for that recording!
Have they been using the same piece for the past 15 years? I've been rehearsing this song for all state
Bravissimo!!!
Thank you Dylan!!
Somebody please get this poor tubist an accompanist. After all this time spent rotoing, he really deserves it.
You’re not kidding! When you’re mostly shooting the video by yourself, you make a lot of mistakes with the set up. Rotoscoping nightmare, lol
It’s crazy he’s able to switch back and forth so fast too. I can’t even tell he’s doing it
I might just take a look at this one! seems fun to play! Thanks for the amazing reference recording, Scott!
Of course, Landon! Thanks for watching and the kind words!!

Im playing the whole song for my solo and ensemble as a sophomore it's super hard
Good luck!!

Tuba players (other than I) at my school would flip if they had to play anything near this.
Good idea! I should try that out next time
