I was at that race, I took my son for the first time, we were sitting by the paddock and son was eating his chutney sandwiches, then along came on BBC radio 2 commentator, and pinched a sandwich out of his hand. Safe to say he didn't work for radio 2 for the rest of the day.
Only the late Henry Cecil could put in a second string horse and still win the Derby a true champion trainer. God bless you Henry for giving us such first class horses may you rest in peace.
@@robertdelacy3434 No Roy Brocklehurst clearly hasn't, because he had a month to respond to your comment and there's been no reply ( Robbi your wasting your time I'm afraid).
Frankie Dettori on Wolf Prince who was trained by former top-class jumps trainer Michael Dickinson. Dickinson moved to the US in 1987 after his ill-fated spell as a Flat trainer for owner/breeder Robert Sangster.
Tenby didn't stay the mile and a half distance - plus the fact , as the late Pat Eddery ( Tenby's jockey ) later said , the favourite just wasn't as good as connections thought he was . Commander-In-Chief went onto to win the Irish Derby after this . Tenby , however , ran three more times after this . He finished 3rd in the 10f Eclipse at Sandown, 8th in the 12f King George at Ascot and finally 7th in the 10f Juddmonte International at York.
I agree totally he was the only Cecil horse who didn't live up to expectations maybe the Welsh people hipe him up a bit but very disappointed race career.
Two legends Cecil and kinane
Thank you , espmadrid, for sharing this. Thank you.
The winner by Dancing Brave went on to win the Irish equivalent. Barathea and Bob's Return went on to win subsequent Group Ones respectively.

Kinane had an excellent record in the Derby, three wins and a few near misses.

Barathea was a top class miler and a late bloomer. Had no business racing in the Derby. Awful decision by connections.

@@roybrocklehurst7322 A few Cecils horse didn't live up to expectations, just as many other trainers have horses that don't go the right way.
ThefightingCelt: He also ran and finished 4th in the Champion Stakes at Newmarket.
