Vetiver Guerlain (EDT) | Fragrance Review | Handsome Smells
Вставка
- Опубліковано 1 жов 2024
- Year of release: It was created in 1961 and re-launched again in 2000
Classification: Woody Aromatic
Nose: Jean-Paul Guerlain, who's created other masculine classic at Guerlain such as Habit Rouge and Heritage. He was the last of the family master perfumers, being the fourth generation Guerlain to work as the master perfumer of the brand. He retired as the head perfumer in the early 2000s and stayed on as advisor but removed from the Guerlain brand in 2010 for racist remarks made on French TV regarding his inspiration for one his classic perfumes Samsara.
Top Notes:
Bergamot, Tobacco, Lemon, Nutmeg, Neroli, Coriander, Mandarin Orange
Heart Notes:
Vetiver, Pepper, Carnation, Sage, Orris Root, Sandalwood
Base Notes:
Vetiver, Oakmoss, Leather, Myrrh, Civet, Tonka Bean, Amber
My take:
- Opens with a beautiful fresh bergamot infused with bright, green vetiver. The vetiver at this stage, is the fresh and bright variety, giving off a lovely classy gentlemanly vibe
- As the scent develops into the heart, you get a whisper of warmness, a slightly warm spice that starts to cream through, this is coming from the note of tobacco, which joins the fresh vetiver
- Deep into the drydown, pass the 6 hour mark, the scent is all about the vetiver, which now is more dry and rooty, with a hint of green brightness.
Longevity: Around 8-10 hours
Projection: The projection is nice and strong for the first 3 hours, after which starts to came down, however still very noticeable.
Season: This is perfect for spring, which is it's ideal season, it works best when it's nice and sunny, but the weather is not too hot. It can also work really well in autumn/fall. I would personally avoid this in the high heat, only because of the warmness of the tobacco the woodiness in the drydown which would be feel cloying in the high heat, but if it's a cooler summer day - say less than 20°C, this could work fine. There's no reason why you couldn't wear this in the winter, but there's better scents out there that cut through the cold.
Occasion: I think this works best as a day time scent, for work and formal. It's a classy gentlemanly scent, so works when you've worn a shirt or dress smartly best. It can no doubt work as a casual scent, but this scent deserves a wear when you're dressed well. This could make a solid signature scent.
Rating: 8/10
If you can, sniff ds and Durga st Vetyver. It’s incredible.
Thanks for the suggestion, I will seek it out!!
Back before I owned a single bottle of Guerlain, I would've described this one simply as "old man soap". 😆 I think I had the same reaction to Ferrari's Bright Neroli the first time I smelled it. Nearly a decade later, I suddenly feel like JP Guerlain after his questionable comments in that fateful interview. 🤭 Now I have trouble articulating the depth and brilliance of the composition. Still a reference vetiver for me.
Haha 😂 thanks for sharing Doni, I can see this being a reference vetiver for many.
I've been wearing Vetiver Guerlain Eau de Toilette, and it's a timeless classic. The refreshing citrus opening with bergamot and lemon transitions into a complex heart of nutmeg and pepper. The earthy, green vetiver base, balanced with warm tobacco and sweet tonka bean, is the star. It has excellent longevity and versatility, suitable for both day and evening wear. This sophisticated and elegant fragrance is both classic and modern, perfect for those seeking refinement and timeless appeal.
Great review and I enjoyed it and I like this fragrance and I give it a 9 out of 10 in my opinion and have a blessed day
Thanks Michael, have a blessed day also 🙏
You welcome keep up the good work and thank you very much GOD BLESS 🙏
If you could get the camera any closer to your face that would be great thanks x
I love this stuff, especially the silver cap version you have
it's fantastic isn't it, one of the great masculine fragrances imo
Hope you don't mind me asking but what accent do you have? It's amazing (my Pittsburgh accent is awful lol).
Haha thank you. I'm from the Midlands, England ☺️
Omg I wore this kind of exclusively for years! Beautiful on a woman. Unisex imo despite it being green. My kids know it as the ‘green colour perfume’. 🥰
Thanks so much for sharing that, that's class that your children enjoy it on you and know it as the "green colour perfume", that's crazy cute!
It's a beautiful elegant scent, so yes you right it could work well for women as well.
Great to see a comment from you Rachel!
I recently purchased a bottle of Guerlain Vetiver after reading that it had been reformulated, perhaps when the newest bottles were released a couple of years ago.
Ten years ago, I bought a bottle of Vetiver and hated it. There was a heavy note of wet tobacco leaves combined with wet leather that made the whole composition seem heavy, dated, and dour. I actually threw it away rather than give it to anyone.
This newest version, masterfully re-engineered by Thierry Wasser, Guerlain’s “nose,” is much lighter and fresher without that musty old man smell. I like it so much that I’ll be wearing it quite a bit, especially in the heat of summer. It’s signature scent-worthy.
"It’s signature scent-worthy." - I agree!
Ah a case of a reform working better than vintage for you! I'm glad you like the newer formulation.
I've not tried the old forumulation, but from your description I don't think I'd prefer it over my current bottle.
@@HandsomeSmells If you like vetiver, seek out a bottle of Givenchy's Vetyver, which they now no longer sell. It was Hubert de Givenchy's personal scent which, like Monsieur de Givenchy, came out in 1959, although unlike Monsieur wasn't released to the public until much later. It's a simple construction using three types of vetiver, along with a top note of bergamot, a mid note of coriander, and a base of sandalwood, all of which support the main theme of vetiver. It's stronger and more long-lasting than my new bottle of Guerlain Vetiver, but smells quite similar. With the Givenchy, there is something about it that smells a little bit dated, which is why I'm enjoying the new reformulated Guerlain. Still, the Givenchy is worth seeking out, especially since no one ever talks about it, at least on UA-cam.
sounds like another gem! You sir have great knowledge of fragrances! Thanks for bringing it to my attention.
