Hey!! I am a recent subscriber and absolutely love all of your tips regarding getting into dental school. I also am a rising junior and am taking the DAT this summer. I also saw your previous DAT video and was wondering how you began studying, and if maybe you can get shed some light on what you did for each specific section. That would be much appreciated!!
Hey David, thanks for your comment! I remember first studying for the DAT, and I wasn't really sure how to start. It's important to find your own rhythm and schedule. I began by getting all the resources first. Pick a place that you will study at. I would suggest it not being at home, so you don't have distractions :) I just went to a cafe or library. For bio, I was a bio major, so I didn't have to put in too much time. I literally used AP Cliffs and read through, making my own notes, and making sure to really know the main concepts. For chem/organic, I read through Kaplan's blue book to review, and really studied with Chad's Videos - This is literally my favorite resource. I highly recommend it. For QR, I memorized the main formulas and then did A LOT of questions. Not really a solid method on this. You just need to practice a lot of different questions, and review the ones that you are missing more. For RC, I didn't really study haha. I just did as many random reading passages that I could. For PAT, I went to YT and looked up some tricks to solving the question-type (like keyhole, hole punching, etc). Each section has a lot of different ways you can solve them in a quick amount of time. At first, I took it really slow, examining why the answer is what it is. Then, I started to practice them A LOT after getting more comfortable with the method. The key is to practice as much as you can. Take as many full - lengths toward the end of your studies. Use your resources. I mostly took my exams on Bootcamp, but I've heard of other programs that are great. Here is everything you need to know about the DAT: www.ada.org/~/media/ADA/Education%20and%20Careers/Files/dat_examinee_guide.ashx Good luck! :)
Really helpful video!! I just finished my first year of undergrad and have determined for myself that I think Dentistry is the career path for me! Thanks again for the awesome vids!
Thanks so much girl! I have 2 more years til I graduate with a bachelors in biology then off to dental school. So nerve wracking on if I'll get accepted or not
I'm a final year dental student & here in where I study we don't wear scrubs until the final year. Anyway though, I'd love to see a video of daily life of a dental student. Subscribed! :D
hello Monica. I'm also Monica :)and I'm about to start my schooling as a dental assistant... I'm terrified but soooo excited!!! your videos have helped my anxiety so much. thank you
When did you apply for the navy HPSP? Is it something you applied for in undergrad? Or something you aren't supposed to look into until you start dental school? What was the application process like?
I'm a recent graduate from high school. I've been looking forward into majoring in Dentistry. I just wanted to see if you would know what is a better/easier path to become a dentist. Should I get a degree in A dental Hygienist or a Degree in science ? I'm not sure what to do can I get your opinion ?
Honestly, no matter how great your dexterity skills are, it is completely different holding a drill in your hand. Everyone is going to start off with crappy preps haha, but they key is to practice, practice, practice. Listen to your professor's feedback. Get in touch with your artsy side :) Try sculpting, sketching, and other activities that require a lot of discipline and concentration.
Can you do an informative video on the HPSP??? I want to go to dental school with the scholarship and I havent been able to find a recruiter near me to answer some of my questions. I would like to know, around what time during undergrad will you start getting the packet together for the scholarship and will you know if you were able to get the scholarship before you had to started school?
Get your packet together while you're applying to dental school. You'll need an acceptance letter for your packet to be sent up officially. With all 3 branches being at or over strength, it's becoming increasingly difficult to get an HPSP scholarship. Good luck, apply early and harass the recruiters
Hi Ashley. Kevin below summed it up. You apply pretty much around the same time as dental school. You'll need similar requirements: Transcript, recommendation letters, at least 2 interviews, etc. And sometimes the closest recruiters are in another state unfortunately.... You'll just need to contact them for more information!
Monica, I wanna be a dentist but I have an accent since I came to the US when I was 18 (I'm 20 now). Do you think it is going to be harder for me? I love your videos btw. 😊
J. R. I'm not actually a dentist but a student-- I've shadowed a few dentists and some of them have an accent, and they are pretty successful. I don't think an accent is a big deal breaker
hey there!!! it has been a while since I posted on your videos. I finally got into dental school. (D1 now). may I ask, what video editor are you using for these!!! thanks!!!!..and good luck with school!!
Hi, Monica. love your videos! One quick question. My undergrad major is not at all related to science (it's design). So my question here is, how many classmates have non-science majors?
There are a handful in my class that were engineers. But majority are science-majors. It's not an absolute requirement though, as long as you take your prerequisites!
Hey Mónica!!!!! Im going to start My Junior Year undersgrad in The fall and im súper exited!!! 2 more Years for dental School yeyy!! I Have volunteer, I have s lot of community service and I will start shadowing soon!! Also I'm planning on joining a club and extracurricular activities!!! I just want to know if research is mandatory or voluntarily??? Have a friend who is in his endo specialty now and he suggested me to do research but idk if is really needed.... Hope you answer my question.
Hi Samantha. So exciting to be almost done! That's good. Get as much community service/shadowing hours as you can. Research is not mandatory, but some schools do like to see that you have research experience. It really depends on each school. I personally did not do research. Good luck!
Hi Monica. I can you explain more about your military program? I'm an applicant of 2017. Can you give a general idea about the ranking of dental schools? thank you so much. Your interview video helped a lot.
Hi Alauna! I applied shortly after I applied to dental school. Many students will apply simultaneously because there are similar requirements such as: Transcript, personal essay, recommendation letters, interviews, etc.
harrrMONICA Thank you for the insight! I am studying for my DAT currently and wanted to know when I should start talking to a recruiter to apply for the scholarship program too. So this is really good information to know! Do you happen to know how many letters of recommendation they require of you for HPSP and whether a writer can use Interfolio to submit them too? By the way, I am a new subscriber and love your channel! I am really praying I get into dental school because I can't wait to start my future in this career field. 😁
Might be a stupid question but does graduating from dental school get you a masters degree..? And do you get to practice dentistry right after graduating?
Graduating from dental school does not give you a master's degree. As long as you are registered with your state dental council you may practise dentistry straight after graduating.
Why should I do Biological Science and not a Pre Dental School? I'm so confused about what I should to do to be helping myself in the future to be able to apply for Dental School 😩 oh and just to let you know I love your videos haha
How do you pay for your expenses if you don't have a job ? Do your parents do that for you ? Is there like a financial aid program available to people who are studying That cover your expenses for food , shelter ,etc. plz let me know .
Is it true that a lot of dental schools don't like community college credits, and that some don't even accept them? It's concerning because I was planning on attending a cc, since the financial situation my family is on right now is critical and they are able to contribute very little to my education, but I've started to have second thoughts on that. I'm applying to a university and I'm hoping with all my soul that I'm not too late to get accepted (and that my scholarship transfers, because if not I am not going to be able to attend!). Any thoughts on this? I absolutely love your videos, Monica!
Hey Jerry! Just from personal experience, I think dental schools do like to see university credits just because the majority of applicants graduate from a university. However, I cannot say that students who have gone to a CC have NOT been accepted. I am sure there are exceptions! Try to reach out to the dental school advisors and get their opinions too. Hope it works out!
hi I'm starting a dental academy soon. I'm 30. its a 9 week program that turns u into a dental assistant. I have never been in the field before. why did u have to interview to get in? here I just payed the fee and I was in . its very popular here.
Try to develop good skills that will help you in college + future. I'd work on time management and making sure to complete assignments as soon as possible so you have more time for studying + free time!
Hi! I just stumbled upon your channel! Great videos! I just have a quick question. What should a junior (well going into junior year) in high school be doing to make sure they eventually get into dentistry? How important are grades (my grades are all good but I'm nervous that I won't do good in AP Language or AP US History this year)? Thanks!
Honestly, dental schools will not check your high school grades. It all depends on how well you do in undergrad. Just try your best and get those AP credits so you don't have to take a few classes in college. With extra credits, you can take a science class that may look good on your transcript when you apply. Good luck!
can you upload a video about how to get good grades or how to survive college how to earn scolar ships or how to apply college or anything school or later future related?? PLEASE>< Thank you♡♡♡♡
Monica, thank you for these videos! They are so helpful! One question, I have one more year of my bachelors in dental hygiene. I am currently a CDA. Do you believe that with my experience in the dental field applying with set me above the person with no experience?
hi!! i'm a senior in high school and already really interested in going to dental school. i know that it is recommended to major in a science during undergrad bc it will be an advantage during the DAT and dental school, but I also know that a large part of business that comes along with being a dentist. I wanted to know if you recommend majoring in Biology and minoring in Business or if i should just stick to majoring in Biology ?
Hey Monica, I have a question. So I'm planning to take a gap year before dental school (currently a senior), I haven't taken my DAT yet, but I plan to sometime this spring (probably April), then hopefully apply by June 1st, 2017. How fast do DAT scores usually come in? Will they be there before June 1st?
Hi! I took a gap year as well :) Your scores will come out as soon as you click the "end" button on your exam, and you get a print out as well. Your official scores get sent to the ADA maybe a few weeks after that!
Ahhh okay thank you!!! Youre content is great! keep it up! I'm also trying to apply for the HPSP scholarship, but the whole process is just so confusing!
Monica how much year do you have to study to become a dentist even though my dream career is to become a surgeon doctor second choice is bank manager and third choice is dentist even those I have seven more years until I start medical school im ten though
I would, but I am also fairly new to the program. If you would like a lot more detailed information, check out the links in the description box. From the website, you will be able to contact your nearby recruiter, and they will be able to give you all the information you need!
A huge filling fell off on my molar soon it was covered it cavities, I went to the dentist to have it filled in, the dentist said if it doesn't hurt in the next few days you're good, surely it started hurting like a bitch! I been in pain for 2 weeks. My question is Why didn't the molar hurt when it had cavities, now that it's cavitie free it hurts? Makes no sense to me. Can you help me understand what's going on plz thanks
It's going to differ a bit from school to school, but yes, you'll learn the dental terminology right off the bat. Our school actually got to work in lab a lot earlier than the other schools, so we started waxing/prepping teeth in the beginning of fall semester. Your first 2 years will mostly be didactic, focusing heavily on core science classes - Anatomy, physiology, histology, microbiology, radiology, biochemistry, oral pathology, etc. Then there is also the addition of lab where you are actually practicing your hand skills, making preps, restorations, impressions, projects, etc. Then there are smaller classes embedded into each semester.
I want to graduate with a master's degree, is that a good idea because I heard since alot of dentists have a bachelor's degree it would help me beat my competition or am I totally wrong about this?
If you want to pursue a masters, go for it! Many students get accepted with a bachelor's degree, but if achieving a masters is something you're passionate about, it would look good on your application too!
Question! I'm currently looking into classes for dental hygiene . Do I need to have a certain gpa to get into a school for hygiene with me finishing dental assisting? I'm not confident in my high school gpa 😞 please help
Hi Frankie. I'm sure there are averages of GPAs for schools. I would try to find the class profiles on the school's websites or contact student admissions. Good luck!
Hello i'm from algeria i want to go to med school but my parents want me to be a dentist can you give us reasons why dentistiry is better than med school
I can, but those would be my personal reasons. One field is not better than the other. It depends on if you're passionate about it and really want to pursue. Good luck
I'm not sure if you're still active here, but were you interested in science or did you just want to be a dentist? I'm thinking about dentistry, but I'm not really into science! So I'm not sure if that should be a deal breaker or not..
Hello! I'm trying to be active, but it can be difficult to do sometimes :( Have you tried taking science courses in undergrad? Dentistry is pretty heavily science-based. All the courses you take in undergrad (biology, chemistry, organic chem, biochem, microbiology, physiology, anatomy, etc....) are all going to be studied again in dental school, and they're on the national boards. It will be integrated even after school because dentistry is a lifelong learning career. But don't give up if you really want to pursue a career as a dentist. Nothing is impossible with lots of dedication. Good luck!
Haha, no! We see patients very soon, but that's all part of the profession. It's not going to be all pearly whites, but as a clinician, you have the responsibility to recognize diseases/cancers/tooth decay to help your patients back to health!
You need a bachelor's degree (four years college) before applying for dental school, there are certain prerequisite classes to take, and you need to take the DAT (Dental Admissions Exam).
I know it sounds scary, but it's really an amazing experience. After a few sessions, it really isn't daunting! Don't let it stop you if you really want to pursue dentistry :) It's a small part of a very long career ahead!
I had a few more options, but I chose University of Louisville because they have a well - known program, good/safe location, and the professors/staff/people are so friendly. It was a clear choice for me!
Oh cool! Didn't expect to get a reply haha. I used to be a dental student too. I did my dental studies in HK, then finished my orthodontic training at NYU. Good luck with your studies!
you are so sweet! good luck with the rest of dental school... it gets better i promise!!
Haha I believe you Dr. Wendy!!!
well that intro couldn't be better haha
haha I try ;P
You do a great job helping future and current dental students with your dentistry-focused videos! Keep it up! :)
Wow, a comment from Spear Education!!

+Rashida Brown good luck girl!!!
I know the feeling, but just study really hard and make sure you take plenty of practice exams. You'll do great!
I'm a final year dental student & here in where I study we don't wear scrubs until the final year. Anyway though, I'd love to see a video of daily life of a dental student. Subscribed! :D

Love your videos Monica! We need more dental videos because there are not enough.
I will try to! :)
Amazing video! I love your enthusiasm. And this really helped me refocus my energies.
hello Monica. I'm also Monica :)and I'm about to start my schooling as a dental assistant... I'm terrified but soooo excited!!! your videos have helped my anxiety so much. thank you
Hi Monica :D You're so awesome! Good luck with your journey :)
When did you apply for the navy HPSP? Is it something you applied for in undergrad? Or something you aren't supposed to look into until you start dental school? What was the application process like?
Such an exciting and emotional time ! where are you being stationed?
In NC!
Thank you for your videos!! They're really helpful and inspiring. I love to watch them
Thanks so much for watching them :)
Starting dental school at my state school next month! Very excited! 😅 graduated in '13 as well.
So exciting!!! Congratulations :) Which school?

harrrMONICA thanks! Semester is almost done. Everything is going very well. Hope everything is well with you, money.
Thanks for making these videos. I hope you continue them!
No prob! I will try to :)
Are leadership activities necessary to get in dental school? Can I just do shadowing and volunteer work at a homeless shelter .
incredible video editing! happy to find and subscribe your channel
Thanks a lot :D
She turned into a baseball player real quick.😂
Is there a form you had to fill out regarding volunteer/shadowing to validate that it was all completed?
This was great found it really interesting even though I'm not from the US! What software do you use to edit your videos?
Final Cut Pro
Thank you for making these videos! Your videos are really helpful and love your bright personality~ :)
Thanks a lot for watching :D
What's exactly are you studying within the area of dentistry are you doing your DDS, Oral Surgery, Endodontics, or Orthodontics?
Right now, I am doing general, but who knows! Haven't had rotations or clinical experience yet, so TBA :P
I'm a recent graduate from high school. I've been looking forward into majoring in Dentistry. I just wanted to see if you would know what is a better/easier path to become a dentist. Any tips on how I can improve my hand skills since I'm starting dental school in september & I'm not used to work with my hands at all!
I LOvE your intro.! Your tips are great. Keep up the great work...❤️❤️❤️

wow! where do you get the adorable teeth plushies
why did you never consider medical school?
Zee19 That’s like asking a student in medical school why they never considered dental school
Can you please do a video explaining the Navy HPSP 😀?
I would, but I am also fairly new to the program. If you would like a lot more detailed information, check out the links in the description box. From the website, you will be able to contact your nearby recruiter, and they will be able to give you all the information you need!
Hello, do you think dental schools would frown upon pre requisite courses taken at local Community Colleges? Thanks in advance!
I'm barely going into high school, should I be worrying about this?...
Hahaha, enjoy your youth! You can start being curious about it and asking your dentist! Focus on your studies in HS. You still have a lot of time!
Can you help me understand what's going on plz thanks
hello! I loved your video
I wanted to know if as a morrocan dental student I can study in the us the second year and work there
on your first year of dental school do you basically just learn mainly terminology and procedures?
Oh yeah about the military this office I interned at the Dentist did the same thing! Good luck Monica!
Thank You for your reply Monica! btw you are very pretty lol
how much money do you make a week
hi Monica, thank you so much for your video.
It really helps a lot, really!
Glad it helped out ^^
BTW your teeth seem pretty good, why did you wear braces ?
I wanted to fix a bit of my crowding :D
Also in the US is dentistry only a postgrad course, and how long is the course! Sorry I know you answered many qs already lol
Hey Komal! Regarding your first question, I use final cut pro. And to earn our DMD, it is 4 years long. How about the UK?
Thank you! Its 5 years for undergrads and 4 years for postgrads (which is less common)
How long do you have to serve in the navy?
Minimum of 4 years for me. It goes year to year
Are you still in Dental School?. If not how long did it take for you to graduate from Dental School
Yes I am. I have 3 more years left!
Well I just want to say personally I enjoy watching your videos and thank you so this is my first year going into Dental School
what can i expect in my externship
I want to graduate with a master's degree, is that a good idea because I heard since alot of dentists have a bachelor's degree it would help me beat my competition or am I totally wrong about this?
If you want to pursue a masters, go for it! Many students get accepted with a bachelor's degree, but if achieving a masters is something you're passionate about, it would look good on your application too!
+harrrMONICA does that mean a master's won't help me in my career to becoming a dentist (more specifically an Oral Surgeon)?
Good luck!
associate or degrees how long will it take ?
Good luck!
harrrMONICA thank you so much for replying!!
can I join a proff sport with medical or dental school?!??
do I have time for that?!
What dental school are you in ?
this is great thank you so much 😭😭😭
Welcome :)
Nice apartment by the way which dental school do u go to
University of Louisville, School of Dentistry!
+harrrMONICA thx
What dental school do you go to?
University of Louisville, School of Dentistry
thank you for this! :)
You're welcome!!
Hi, kind of late but I wanted to know when would be a good time to apply for the air force program your in?
You probably want to apply around the same time as when you're applying to dental school :)
Is it yucky how you do your job
Haha, no! We see patients very soon, but that's all part of the profession. It's not going to be all pearly whites, but as a clinician, you have the responsibility to recognize diseases/cancers/tooth decay to help your patients back to health!
I thank you for this x)
You're welcome ^^
was it possible to go right into dental school from high school or do you need a degree in something.
You need a bachelor's degree (four years college) before applying for dental school, there are certain prerequisite classes to take, and you need to take the DAT (Dental Admissions Exam).
Thanks soo much
no prob! good luck!
there are some guaranteed admission programs where you go to the same school fr undergrad and professional school as part of the same program
Do you have to practice on cadavers in anatomy class?
Yes you do. It's a little uncomfortable at first, but you totally get used to it :)
harrrMONICA Oh gosh 😰 that's scary. The one thing that puts me off of wanting to become a dentist :(
I know it sounds scary, but it's really an amazing experience. After a few sessions, it really isn't daunting! Don't let it stop you if you really want to pursue dentistry :) It's a small part of a very long career ahead!
harrrMONICA okey dokey ^^ thanks for the encouraging words I guess it's something that you'll just have to get used to 😅
omg HarrrMonica is my hero
Did you ever learn how to juggle? bc if not... you should work on it. I heard you fail in dental school if you don't know how to.
you are the sweetest
which application do u use for the freakin effects in your videos dear...?
Final cut pro!
First! and this is great btw. ☺
Thanks a lot!
+harrrMONICA where are you
You are so beautiful and wonderful funny hi from Venezuela
Hola Alberto! Thank you for watching
You’re beautiful
U look beautiful 👑
Thank you. That's very nice of you!!
What made you choose Kentucky?
There's not much Asians there, but then it might only be one of your few choices for school though.
And I had no idea how I stumbled upon your video lol
I try to reply when I can! :) That's awesome!!! I love my orthodontist haha. And thanks, I start back tomorrow! dun dun dun
interesting😃😃😃lol
