Transforming A Neglected Room In The Cottage

- DIY attic room makeover on a budget! I never go upstairs in the cottage - that's changing this week. Boiling hot in the summer and freezing cold in the winter, this room was full of half unpacked boxes - but until I get to the cottage part of the renovation, I wanted a room I can actually use, so that's first on my list for 2025!

The Backstory:
I've been stuck in rut for the past couple of years - both my parents passed away at the end of 2022 and since then I've been navigating grief, burnout and just being scared to make a change. I decided that 2024 was going to be the year I set my life on fire, because life is too short to spend all of it wondering just what the point is. So I quit my job, sold my house in the suburbs and bought a 150yr old cottage in the middle of the Scottish countryside. Follow along as I attempt to renovate this little stone house, build a backyard homestead and hopefully fall in love with life, all over again.
Spoiler alert - I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing, so almost anything could happen.
This week I'm working on a neglected part of the cottage - one of my upstairs attic rooms. This room was home to half unpacked boxes and clutter - and I really need space for a desk so I don't have to edit these videos sitting on the sofa anymore! As it's a temporary makeover I'm trying to keep my costs as low as possible... Keeping that in mind - what would you do with the floor? Hire a sander? Paint it? Leave it as it is?
Leave it as it is.
Paint the edge of the floor and perhaps just stain the rest like your 2 small bedside tables.
I'd consider sanding and oiling/waxing/painting depending on how pricey renting a sander is where you are. Then a big rug as I'm sure there will be draughts between the floorboards and you could get one that you'll reuse in a room after the refurb.
I painted a couple of floors, one black and one white. One floor paint and one emulsion with varnish over. Both worked great but both looked better with a rug, possibly green in your case? It will look better if you do nothing, just not that carpet.! I hope Sven doesn't start bringing you "presents", particularly at midnight.
Paint it !! Then a beautiful rug
I am in the US…and half of the country is really suffering right now…keep these lovely videos coming….you are a gift to us in these dark times.❤
Take care
His videos really calm me down, considering what’s happening in the US.
All the lottery winnings couldn’t buy you the lovely community of followers you have here Jude, and how happy we are to see you and (glimpses of) Sven and your many projects each week.
You’re not wrong about that! I’m so grateful for all the lovely messages I get every week!!
I'm cat sitting and house sitting this week for a friend of mine. Up until last year, she had 3 cats. Sadly, down to one now. I've just spent an hour playing with Ralph and his Christmas toys. That's the kind of step mum I am. 😊 I'm very pleased Sven came back!
@@MsGoddamnRobotawww you sound like the best cat step mum!!
Another great video xx
Loved the video, unfortunately these projects take time you are resilient and will get through it good luck. So glad Sven came home 🐈⬛❤️
The upside down horse shoe on the ground means your wealth will come from the earth. (I just made that up, but it sounds good to me) The curtains look really good! Oh, it is so good to see that Sven returned. He probably knows the entire area now after a 14 hour adventure. It makes perfect sense to make yourself a cozy study, 2 years is a pretty long time.
That was my first thought about the upside down horseshoe as well.
I'm 100% on board with this interpretation!
@@Julia-zj2ch sounds like the perfect meaning! Can’t think of anywhere better! Jude, stick some in your raised beds 😆
@Julia-zj2ch I’m totally on board with that thought process. Especially as I’m superstitious!
Upside down horse shoe used to means that your good luck will not run out…if it’s facing down you not going to have much luck. I was born a long time from yesterday my father was in the Light Horse and then became a jackaroo that’s what they did with the old horseshoes, nail them upside down on shed doors, front doors or anywhere.
Omg moving those boards 😅 I could see you taking flight in a gust of wind!
For cost effectiveness, leave the floor boards as they are and buy a gorgeous rug which you can utilise again once the renos are eventually done. Sven is loving you on his terms, cats are such cats!
Glad to see you wearing a mask and headphones. You have taken on an enormous job, but for someone who says they don’t know what they’re doing, I think you’re doing a great job. Looking forward to your progress.
Looks like Sven has finally made the decision that he is "home". I have had a lifetime of rescue cats and many have hidden and watched like Sven until they come to trust and accept you as their person. I always felt honoured when they did. Sven is gorgeous.. I know you will cherish his affection and companionship and he yours.
You have a gorgeous cat. He was exploring “his” territory. I would keep him indoors at night. Just make sure you have a litter box for him. He will probably not use it but just in case.
I say just order a rug! Get it in colors you like and you’ll definitely use it somewhere else in the house after this room is gone. Painted wood floors will not keep your feeties warm and sounds like a lot of work. I bought a beautiful, huge, WASHABLE rug from Amazon. We get compliments on the print and when we needed to wash we took it outside and washed it with the hose and left it to dry. That’s my recommendation! Love the green and it’s the one I was most attracted to when you put them up!
Good idea! Much easier, and probably would look much better than trying to paint the floor. As well as using it in another room after renovation.
Amazon is to be avoided.
Washable rugs are the best!! I have three of them..the one in the kitchen gets thrown in the wash once a week ( two dogs) easy peasy.
I agree. Bare wood floors have less upkeep, they are gorgeous and make any room look larger. A few coats of urethane will protect the wood for years, and a rug will make it look warm and inviting 😊
I think a rug but I’d put the horrid carpet back down before I paint to protect your lovely floorboards.
Jude, I laughed out loud at your ingenious way of moving those heavy ass big pieces of MDF. Well done, my friend, well done! “Oh, hello. YES!” 😂
You might want to feed Sven twice a day. In the evening when he's inside eating, close the cat door for the night. Having cats sleep inside at night keeps them around much longer in my experience.
My cat is the opposite. He is outside at night and inside during the day😺 During winter he is inside alot more.
Cats who are inside kill many fewer birds and animals, and are much less likely to be killed.
@@rikkemeek1506 sadly cats kill most birds at dusk & dawn, so it's best to do what she says above. I think the RSPB ask that people keep cats in at night just for that reason.
This helps the bird population too, I think the RSPB ask that people keep cats in at night.
@@vivellasmumyou're boring.
I’m quite certain there are at least 10,000 of us who would be happy to come help anytime you needed an extra hand if we lived close enough. 😊. Love your videos, your positive attitude, and Sven of course.
For sure, I would definitely give him a hand :)
me too in exchange for crochet lessons! 😆
True !!!! I am across the pond from Scotland....would LOVE to help if I were closer, and if it didn't intrude upon Jude' s privacy....You're correct, so many pf us would volunteer !!!

@@sue.3218 I’ll teach you while he’s baking us some lovely fresh bread :)
I love that you build the things you need instead of buying, and if you don’t know how you figure it out.
Yes!! I try to use what I have where I can - as I feel like I have plenty of stuff as it is!! 😂
Haha I’m waiting for the episode where we all find out that Sven has six different neighbourhood homes and six different names 🤣
I’m so glad he came home. And of course you’re his favourite home and person Jude 😊
Hahaha!! So I had a timeshare in a cat at my last house - who actually belonged to the people across the street, but would come in to my house every time I opened the door - and would sit outside and yowl at me! And then she’d wander off and get fed at the pub around the corner 😂😂
I laughed when you worked out how to carry those boards, that's exactly what I have had to do in the past. One thing you learn when you are on your own is that there is always a way!!!! 😊
Exactly that!! 😂😂 I stood there for ages thinking ‘there must be a way to do it’ and then loads of people pointed out that there’s a gadget you can get that helps you carry them! 😂😂
That is so true! I find that for most things, you can figure out how to do it by yourself 👍🏻
I didn’t laugh but I did chuckle. 😊
Farmer here... Save that carpet for pathways in y garden and greenhouse. Great weed control. Love your progress Jude😊😊
Great idea !
I came to the comments to say the same thing!
Oh great idea! I’ve got a stack of offcuts from the carpet in my bedroom too - I’m going to put a couple on the compost bins to keep some of the heat in!
Also handy for warming up your empty frozen borders for spring planting. I love how I've come here a day late and everyone has commented what I was going to say.. like carpeting the loft as that will also help keep downstairs heat too.
As ever I am again stunned by your talents: planning, interior design, self-care as well as caring for Sven… You , Sir are a true marvel!!!
Jude, With the room being cold, I wouldn't go for floorboards. Get some cheap and cheerful carpet and lay that. I realise this is temporary but up to two more winters will make this a cold office. Nice job so far.
My thoughts exactly. All carpet suppliers have left-over pieces from other jobs. It should not be difficult to get something suitable. And YES! Much too cold for just floor boards!
Indeed, get some off cuts of a nice warm carpet. Which is nice and warm for your feet in the winter and also nice and comfy for your little furry friend to curl up on as he keeps you company :)
@@EV0LS1D0G I just found a 10 x 12 rug on marketplace for an excellent price and it looks more charming than an end cut. Just a thought.
Yes i would definitely use carpet up there a nice thick layer of newspapers first ( it’s great for insulation)and your carpet on top of that 🤗love your clips ❤ hi from the Netherlands
Yes, I agree, please get some carpet .... you won't regret it.
Sven is such a lucky cat…glorious countryside to explore and a warm welcoming home, and bed, too
It was a real relief watching you get that carpet out! The air quality just markedly improved❤
Aw so happy Sven came home. My cat went on an adventure for three months, I was convinced he was gone for ever. Well he found a foster mum and dad 7 miles away but he’s home and doesn’t venture too far now. Lovely tuning in every week to see you.
I think Sven is definitely going to be a wanderer - he’s come and gone a few times but I haven’t seen him since Friday now and I’m trying not to worry too much!
Ahh thank you - I’m so glad you’re enjoying my videos!
The joys of being owned by a cat! 🐈

This is what Sunday evenings are for!

If nothing else you made an old person (88 yrs) smile today and every Sunday who doesn’t smile often. 😊

3 times longer than expected to do a simple task is totally NORMAL!! Keep smiling Jude!❤
I would be spending three times longer getting organized and searching out needed supplies before ever starting the job. You did great!!
You are doing a great job! And Sven is learning how to be a house cat. He probably had no cuddles ever before or even been in a house. He is doing great just like you 💕💕💕
Yay! It’s Sunday - Jude’s video day! ❤
So glad Sven came home 😽
Sven ain't no fool, he knows where the food and warmth are. Those attic storage boxes are pretty cool. I think I may steal that idea for my attic.
Awwe. Your mum will b so proud of u Jude… l
Am 70 this year too / bless her memory- you are a credit to her look
How well
Your doing. Love ur utube. X
I burst out laughing at your “bizarre skill set” comment. You’re such a delightful human being. Stay you!!
I’m in awe of your ability to find solutions to every situation. Truly admirable how you managed to get those heavy boards into covered storage. So glad to know that you also love all the greens. It’s such a grounding colour. Give Sven a cuddle. See you next week!
We have the same scars. Thank you for being real and for being you. I see you. Much love ❤
I like that level of cat parent 😊 That was the best green of the four of them!
Jude...I'm so glad Sven came home! He knows he's got a good thing with you! I love your videos and watching you get on with it, whatever you do, especially with your commentary. You have a great sense of humor!
That's what you get when you are alone, a weird set of skill sets 😂 Sven found back home and a warm be to snuggled, good to hear. I am alone, for quite some time, and talk to my cats, plants, and birds outside. That is what you get, eccentric people grow like that. On the plus side, no one eats my chocolate stash anymore. The downside is that I miss that extra set of hands. Sometimes I ask a neighbour to help, but usually, I do it better on my own. I love to see that room get-together, Jude.
Oh I talk to myself a LOT! My mum was exactly the same. No one eating your chocolate stash is definitely a plus!
Yesss! My neighbours would have helped me move it, I’m sure - and I don’t doubt I’ll get them to help with some stuff eventually! Things are so much easier with an extra pair of hands!
Jude…..You make my heart smile ❤
I appreciate how gentle and positive these videos are. I am struck by your boxes and containers of stuff...I have those too. This year I am on a mission to declutter and keep only those things I love and/or will use. This will probably be as entertaining to me as your Barn rehab roof project... peace.
I love watching your progress!
My grandfather was very handy and built things, including fitted cabinets. He taught me to estimate how long I thought each part of a project would realistically take, add it up, and multiply that time by 3. I've found that to work well for many years now.
OMG Jude! MY back was hurting just watching you. You are very resourceful. Glad kitty came home. You are likable. 😀
How lovely to see Sven…What a beautiful boy.
Sven came home! I was worried about him the whole video! He is such a beautiful cat, Jude. I'm glad that you are letting him roam.
You could use the old carpet to cover your compost heaps to eep the heat in
Yes! Brilliant
Also, to kill weeds over the winter. They die without sunlight.
Was thinking the same.
So glad your cat came home. They only care about what time it is when it comes to their mealtime.
Those attic storage boxes made of plywood look amazing, what a great idea. If you don’t want them, sell them! I’d snap them up in a second!
Maybe use them to build your shelves on the ends of your desk. Or maybe a small set of desktop drawers.
I wish I had just a little of your energy Jude, you work so very hard. I love seeing you each week and I am impressed by the clear skies you get up in Scotland too. Keep smiling 😊.
This 55 year old is very envious of your new way of life, love how you tackle all the things and look forward to watching your cottage evolve.
So happy that Sven has shown his cat loyalty to his Pop!
Lovely to have Sven to keep you warm at night.
He’s such a good boy!
That Sven! I worried about him thru the whole video, until I saw him back on your sofa. Whew!!! Every time I see the view across the fields, I think that all your work is going to be so worth it, to live where you get to see that view every day. Good luck with the desk and storage building. harpingJanet
Another great vlog Jude, you really brighten up this old lady’s Sunday evening. Your smile makes me smile and your jest for life and your achievements is to be applauded. Just love my Sunday Jude fix.
Thank you so much!! 🥰🐈
I have never wanted to adopt a stranger more in my life.
Your filming and editing skills are next level.
Boop to Sven. ✌🏼💜
Again (and again) you make the most mundane tasks look interesting. Bravo to you. Whew….must admit, I too was extremely worried about Sven…glad he returned home❤
MDF is so heavy ! Well done you. So relieved that Sven came back, love the image of him sat on the window ledge.
You need to title your growing skill set as Problem Solver Extraordinaire. Great video as always
I’m definitely getting better at problem solving!
You amaze & delight me! If only this social technology has been around 45 years ago when I was your age. You are such an inspiration! Thank you for being you and for sharing your life with the rest of us! 🥰😘💕
You will have the *perfect* skill set for your life, once the cottage is finished. Then you get to learn the maintenance skills. All useful and purposeful. Best wishes!💝
I’m kind of excited to learn new things!! I need to remember that problems are an opportunity for learning, not just panic 😂😂

Jude as you have proven there are no problems only solutions, watching you struggle to carry those sheets of board made me want to reach out through the ether to help you.
It’s seems Sven has passed the test by confirming you are definitely worth coming back to for food and cuddles.🥰
Well done you are getting there little by little 💪
JUDEEEEEEE... finally, a bit longer video! The next one must have 60 minutes!!! THANKS ❤😊
Hahaha yesss! The longest one in a while! I have a lot to do this week so I’m hoping for another one around the same length! (I feel like I need to clone myself to get enough done for a 60minute video and still have time to edit it! 😂)
@rewildingjude 60. Not negociabile 🤭 THANKS! 🩵
I spent today beginning to sort through my mother’s effects (she passed in 2022), then watched your video, in which you mentioned your parents’ things. A few tears for both of us. The paint color you chose was my favorite too…the same color as my library. It will be beautiful. Hoping Sven found his way back after roaming the countryside.
I love that you are making your home comfy and nice even before you renovate. It makes it so much better to lift your spirits and for your well being!! It is not a waste of time or money at all. It also helps you to decide how you will use those spaces in the future.
People building and making things these days is wonderful. We live in such a throwaway society. Love the videos and Sven ❤
I-would put some weights in the hems so that they fall evenly and stay put. I think it is a great solution for storage.
An easy way to weight hemsvis to hand sew some light weight chain to them .
Or put some pennies in the hem !xx
Your doing a great Job Jude believe in yourself i believe in you
Aw im glad Sven came home to you x
I have an attic office. I like it best when it's raining. I don’t have anything built in, shelves, desk etc are all freestanding.
Glad Sven returned. ❤
The sound of the rain on the roof is the best!! I don’t think I’d be able to get any shelves to fit, sadly - which is why I’m going to attempt to build some! We shall see how it goes 😂
I have downsized 3 times in last 10 years astonishing what you come to realise you don’t need. If you haven’t looked at it or used it in 2 years you don’t really need it. It takes a lot of soul searching but the relief and freedom when you are done is amazing 😊😊
I have two rules:
If I haven’t I used it in the past year and if I can replace it for less than 20€ it goes to another home (either via a free website, to the free swap shelf or the DRK charity shop).
I would leave the floor and just put down a huge rug that could be used elsewhere if necessary xx
Besides a wheelbarrow- invest in a dolly. It helps with a lot of jobs as a diy homeowner. You’re doing a great job. Maybe a nice area rug for the floor to look nice and keep it cozy.
I was also going to suggest getting a dolly. They are great for transporting heavy items.
@@gerryakamaya marketplace I just got a 10x12 on marketplace
I am so glad you wore a mask while dealing with the floor. Things were grim under that carpet! 😬
Yes!! I pulled up the carpet and thought ‘nope’ - it was so dusty!!
So happy to see Sven back and happy to be with his dad. Clearly you two are made for each other. ❤️ Jude when you stood in the attic full of stuff, it made me think of all the clutter I need to deal with and don’t quite know where to start. Good luck with your cozy attic project, your can do attitude is so inspiring.
I would have picked the same color! You‘ve got new glasses I noticed 🤓
Yesss! I can see again! 😂😂😂
It’s amazing how much stuff we accumulate. My husband and I still live in a very large home here in Vermont, United States. Our boys are grown and gone with families of their own. I’m hoping your channel gives me the inspiration to sort out, donate, sell, and throw away stuff we don’t need or want. Thank you for your awesome channel! 👍🏻❤️
We downsized 2 1/2 years ago, moved a couple of miles away into a much smaller house and it's been great. I felt overwhelmed by all the rooms and *stuff* in our old house. We had lived there 44 years and raised 3 children in that house. Got rid of at least 2/3 of our stuff. I feel like I can breathe now.
Your videos every week are such a delight. My son is away from home, I’ve mentioned this before. My heart aches for my boy but you are just like a visit from heaven for me, you’re the same age as my son so I feel like I get a Daniel fix along with a Jude visit. You truly lift my Mondays in Australia every week and I am so grateful to you. I know that your mum is so proud of you, what a sweet young man you are.

And the morning light in your barn is gorgeous- a beautiful idyllic shot of you working there, really classy photography.
I can relate to your nervousness re letting Sven outside - we moved from the city/suburbs where our cat Iggy had the run of the outside to the bush where there are snakes, wallabies, pigs, rabbits and no doubt other small Australian creatures and were terrified for the first 18 months to let Iggy out. I made various harnesses that he hated and spent hours in supervised walks with him. But bit by bit we let him out and now he mostly stays on the verandah that circles the house, he goes in and out multiple times during the day and is much happier, calmer and fun to be around.
One day at a time Jude, don't forget to be kind to yourself. 😊

54k subs! Not too shabby Jude. Another interesting and productive episode. The attic room is coming along nicely and Sven has officially adopted YOU! 😺
Jude, I'm nearing the end of a home renovation myself (DIY) and have a helpful tip for you. I you ever need to use plaster/joint compound on a large area (where sanding will make a complete mess), apply the joint compound as smoothly as you can, let it dry for about 20 to 30 minutes, then take a large sponge (I use the big ones designed for grouting), wet it, wring about 70% of the water out, then gently run it over the compound. It will smooth nearly as well as sanding but without any of the mess. Also, I vote for painting the floor or just putting a throw rug over it since it will be going away in the future. Keep up the good work. You're doing a great job! Cheers from Oregon in the US.
I'd like the subtitles of what was said when the board pings off the wall 😂

Every inch with love and care. That is going to be your house by the end. Watching the attention you put into removing the carpet and backing reminded me of my own youth, renovating a century-old home. It was so much work but worth the labour of love.
I think if you make it as comfortable, workable space as you can for a temporary fix its worth doing, you will feel more relaxed, less anxious and more creative in your space to do more.well done.
My parents cat loved being out late into the night. Sven is obviously home and loving life. The loft makeover will definitely improve your life too 🥂
Even as a temporary measure, I think it will be lovely to get your room a pleasant place to work in so it’s definitely worth spending time and effort to create a relaxing space. Wish someone could help you with the lifting bit though! Delighted that Sven came home and has realized he’s on to a good thing with you as his human! Take care x
Better a bizarre skillset than none at all. This is what my Mom once told me❤
Glad Sven came back😊 painted my bedroom green, such a relaxing colour 😊
Green is such a good bedroom colour!!
lol it probably isn’t the common association but my gut feeling about the horseshoe was one of grounding. Lovely that you’re turning it upward now to receive too - I don’t really think one is any better than the other, both are part of a balanced life 😊 With yoga we sometimes intuitively talk about having palms down for grounding and up for receiving or energizing so that’s what it brought to mind. Thank you for this content, it’s really soothing as someone frequently stuck at home in an apartment in a city dealing with chronic health and disability. Dreaming of getting somewhere with more room and places to easily access nature on low energy days. ❤
You are so resourceful, your parents will be so proud.

I remember letting my rescue-cat outside for the first time. He had been found as a stray cat and taken to the rescue-centre. I was really worried that he wouldn't come back, but he did, after a number of hours. Relief. Your attic is going to be a great place to work!
