- Watch the Roman Numerals crumble as the falling 2nd changes the underlying harmony. This Music Theory and Harmonic Analysis of the falling seconds in Frédéric Chopin's Marzuka in F Minor, Op. 63, No. 2 for piano, explores the dissonance and unexpected harmonies that make this a favorite Chopin Mazurka!
The figured bass first crumbles with the falling 2nd in the first two measures and continues throughout the piece, even changing the underlying harmony from what we expect to something we don't expect, such as a resolution of a secondary dominant to suggesting we end in Major before suddenly turning to minor. The piece is also easy enough for most intermediate pianists who are looking for Chopin works beyond his preludes and nocturnes.
Written in 1846 and published in 1847, Chopin wrote this short piano piece just a few years before his passing in 1849. It is the second of three called "Trois Mazurkas", which was written for Madame la Comtesse L. Czosnowska.
Recorded in the Music Department Recital Hall of Jacksonville State University with post-production and mastering in the Mason Hall Recording Studio.

Thank you!! There were so many cool things Chopin did with that falling half step. Glad you liked it and thank you for watching! 🎶🎹🙂
I really like how the chords crumble :)
Thanks! Glad you like it! I liked how this Mazurka sets you up for a picardy third (Major Tonic Chord) at the end before sliding down a half step to be in minor.
This is so great! Thank you very much!
