Powdered milk...it's the stuff nightmares are made of, right? Wrong! If you haven't tried powdered milk in the last 15-20 years (and I don't blame you) you'll be pleasantly surprised at how delicious powdered milk can be. In fact, in a blind taste test, participants couldn't tell the difference between fresh milk and the powdered milk. AWESOME!
Because powdered milk is such a vital part of your food storage, isn't about time you learned how easy it is to make it something you'd actually WANT to drink?

We grew up on powdered milk, I was visiting my brother a while ago and we were laughing about how we could never understand why anyone would want to drink a glass of milk until we tried "real" milk, same goes for cheese, I remember the first time I had real cheese, I thought I hated cheese cause we only had the stacks of processed...and no not singles wraps, those were fancy. My mom grew up poor and she was extremely frugal. We had troubled teens who came to live with us so she had a lot of mouths to feed. She ran a tight ship, and saved, sewed our clothes and said no to us for a lot of things. The money she saved allowed us to go on ski trips and summer camping vacations. I am almost 50 now and my parents were able to help all of us to put downpayments on homes, something my sister and I who were single parents would never had been able to do on our own. Thanks for that mom. I buy real milk now, but I have some powdered milk put away for a rainy day.

That's mostly true, but I use some powdered milk to thicken liquid milk for making yogurt. It makes yogurt the consistency of Greek yogurt. I also keep some around for creaming my coffee in case I ran out of the good stuff...:-)

That's the truth right there about the price flip from 70's. First, add some Carnation brand "Cremora" non-dairy creamer to taste, that adds some fat and some sugar. Second with the chocolate milk - pitch the Nestle Quik Chocolate milk powder. They've added so much calcium to be "healthy" that it tastes like chalk.

@@tracycameron2580 Yes, you're right. That is the "legit" way of doing it. I will employ that method when I make yogurt based Indian sweets (like shrikand sp?).... but for having really thick yogurt around the house for "whatever"..... it's an easy way.... no need to find a clean cheese cloth, or a place to set it, or cleaning the cloth after it's done.... there's less steps.
Another method is to use tee shirt material (instead of cheese cloth), pour the yogurt into it (line a bowl with the cloth), then tie four ends together, and hang it up over a bowl to catch the whey (for using in soup, or cooking vegetables etc).

I agree with Crystal. I don’t like making messes or cleaning up messes, so here’s a tip to make this process less messy. You saw in the video those clouds of very fine powder rising as Crystal poured the milk into the water, and then again as she began to stir. I really dislike that fine powder. You may even find yourself breathing it in. So here’s a simple trick:
Instead of pouring the water into the jug and then adding the powder, hold the bag of powdered milk upright, lower the empty jug, upside-down, over the bag, then turn them both over together, pouring the milk into the jug as you do. You don’t get clouds of powder doing it this way. Then pour in water gradually, stirring as you do. I do this in the sink and pour water directly from the tap. That way I can tip the jug and let the water slide down the side of the jug into the milk as I stir, instead of hitting the powder with the water directly. Very little of the milk ends up in the air or on the counter or in your lungs this way.

My Dad used 1 quart whole milk to 3 quarts powdered milk and made sure it was super cold, like right at 33 degrees F …. just before freezing... and one could NOT tell the difference! This was back in the late 70s and powdered milk was cheaper than whole milk at the time.

my Mom did the same when I was growing up. We had a big family and did it to cut costs. Keeping it as cold as possible is the key! And mixing in some fresh milk. She would put in a couple of drops of vanilla, too, as in the video. The cost isn't as attractive now; back then you could make a gallon for about 25 cents.

For anyone wanting to know an updated price, the case of 12 pouches is 64.80 at the LDS home storage center online store. Each pouch (like the one shown in the video) makes 2 gallons of milk. This equates to approximately $2.67 per gallon of milk, which is less expensive than a gallon of store brand milk and much less expensive than name brand milk now.

And when you mixit(rehydrate) it instead of going by their instructions put a third less water in it it tastes better that way and gets closer to whole milk.

Also, instead of 'regular' powdered milk, I've found Nido brand from Nestlé is great; there are different ones, all they are is powdered milk with vitamins added, and they call them "toddler formula" etc., but they are just as good!! If you like your coffee hour & creamy, try it; I never run out of milk (no one on the house drinks it except my grandson when he REALLY wants veal bad and there's no milk in the frig.), and my coffee is always hot & creamy!!

Powdered milk definitely doesn't taste as good as regular milk, but it suits me perfectly as a long haul trucker. I don't keep a lot of perishables on my truck; all I have is a mini fridge. It gets the job done and leaves extra room in the fridge, as I mix it one cup at a time. It's also cost effective at around half the price of regular milk.

I got my family used to drinking powdered milk by gradually adding more and more reconstituted powdered milk, with regular milk, over a period of about a month. By the end of that time they were used to the taste of powdered milk (it was really bad back in the 1980s) and didn't think anything about drinking it. As a foster mom, I sometimes had as many as 11 children in the house so it was important to always have milk on hand. I could store a lot of powdered milk without having it take up room in the refrigerator. Today's powdered milk is far superior which is nice for me as I now live alone so I can whip up just the amount of milk I'm going to need, for each day, at much less cost than buying milk by the quart. I especially like a warm glass of milk with honey and vanilla at night.

I do love powder milk. I recently saw a video that says that they add something to the powdered milk that has cholesterol that sticks to the arteries. Do you have a relevant video? With the knowledge you have on the subject, can you please find out if this is true and if it is bad for health and why would they add this thing?

So funny and cool that you did this and I found it! This is one of the big arguments we (me,haha) we had with Mom. 7 person fam. Disabled Mom and Dad working 2 jobs. Not enough to live the best life but Dad made too much to get help. Boy did that change later. My ex son-in-law was able to get help with 3 kids and an I'll wife...we are alot of hamburger/soy burgers too. Venison from some church people. Stuff we could grow. And cereal. Chicken because Dad cut chickens and delivered to restaurants etc. I just got a kick when I saw this. I could ALWAYS tell when that's what we had, even tho it was all put in pitchers. Thankyou! Be safe😷😜🙏🇺🇸🥣🥛

I always found the Carnation powdered milk pretty hard to take... but I found Provident Pantry Instant powdered milk and that was a real game changer! Tastes amazing.
To mix a quart I warm up one cup of WARM water... add 1 cup powdered milk and stir it up well. That desolves everything easily. THEN I add the 3 other cups of COLD water and store it in the frig. over night.
It's a tad pricey BUT I always have milk on hand...so saves running to store. With our current situation I'm all set with milk for a while so... a literal 'life saver'.

Use ice.Powdered milk mix it with a can of evaporated milk an fill the can 75 percent with water to reconstitute it.And you can use most brands of powdered milk that way without the taste issue. But always keep it very cold.

I've been making powdered milk for years to cook with (gravies and sauces mostly) but over the years it has gotten to be more expensive - costing way more than fresh milk and I think originally it was meant to be more affordable for larger families. I will be ordering some from the LDs store (I bought my wheat from there so I could make blender pancakes!) Thanks for the great ideas. My husband spotted the powdered milk in the fresh milk right away - so I may try to mix it with whole milk next time and see how that flies. The kids could care less if it tastes like chocolate!

Loved your video and ideas. You are a HOOT! You asked for my worst "old type" powdered milk experience. Here it is: One night we watched an G rated old murder mystery with our high school aged son and daughter. The poor soul who died was killed by arsenic. That night after everyone had gone to bed I made up a gallon of powdered milk and actually added a touch of almond flavoring to it, thinking it might help with the taste. Next afternoon the teens came home from school, hit the kitchen for snacks, (predictable, right?) making PBJ sandwiches, grabbing a glass of cold milk and plopped themselves down at the table to start homework. Our son took a big swallow of milk, spit it out, hitting his sister's textbook, as he said "Yikes, this milk is horrible!! Mom, did you put arsenic in it?" We all laughed, I tasted the milk and poured it down the drain, apologizing. From then on, the only place it went was into baked goods. YUCK!

Good tips! However, I have to say there is (or used to be) a huge difference in flavor between powdered whole milk (such as Nido, Klim, etc) and powdered non-fat milk (such a Carnation).
As a child, we lived in many areas around the world where fresh bottled milk wasn't available and the options were either fresh raw milk (which my mother, with her medical training, did not trust) or powdered whole milk. So we pretty much grew up on powdered whole milk. When fresh pasteurized milk was available we would get some but we quickly found out that not all milk is the same... taste differs from one breed of cows to another... and yes, although powdered whole milk tasted fine, the fat content is usually higher than fresh whole milk.
I had never tasted powdered non-fat milk until I got to college and saw the packets and packages of Carnation powdered non-fat milk inthe supermarket and because it was so cheap I decided to try it out. Yes, it made me gag! It was horrible! Needless to say, I threw it all away immediately!

I grew up drinking Carnation instant milk...it was a vile, murky blue-gray brine that was barely edible. Add the chlorinated water used to mix it and it was a recipe for disappointment. If It were a perfect world, I'd mix instant milk with Half and Half...that might actually be pretty good lol. I have been stocking up on Nestle NIDO Fortificada and it's a superior product...best I've tried anyway. Vanilla extract (I make my own) and a pinch of cinnamon (it's what I add to my coffee grounds when I brew it) make a big difference. You can also add a teaspoon of powdered protein powder (your choice of flavors) to boost the nutrients and flavor. Thanks for the video...great advice!

I'm a college student who uses powdered skim milk like regular milk. It's much lighter to carry home than a gallon of milk, since I use public transport. It also lasts longer! It tastes no different to me than regular storebought skim. If I want to make it into whole milk, I add a little cream and stir it in. I think I even prefer it, since I like the cool glass jug I keep it in.

A little tiny bit of veggie oil to add fats back and salt does better than sugar and warming spices like nutmeg, cinnamon etc. Or you can do all those but moderately. That works best for me.

I started using it 55 years ago as a single schoolteacher. Recently (past 5 years) went back to it but there's a shortage now, unable to find any since COVID. For disbelievers of its economy, if you throw out "store milk" before it goes bad, then dry is way cheaper. I mix it in a smaller (glass) container and none EVER goes to waste. I also add about a tsp sugar and smaller amt vanilla, but the REAL camoflauge is a few shakes of SALT! Also, I put my container of water in the fridge to cool BEFORE I add the milk and it still dissolves. What doesn't can be strained if you need it immediately. My hack is using it for pancakes, gravy, even scrambled eggs or anything requiring milk if you cook from scratch. The container needs to be washed every time which is why I'm not a fan of using milk jugs with the intent to deceive the family; they can't be scrubbed inside nor hot enough water to get the slime out that adheres to the plastic. Maybe THAT's what causes the gags -- old soured milk on the inside of plastic jugs! YUK!
