  • Mooring at Avalon harbor in Catalina is pretty straight forward. If you have never been to Avalon before, check out two web sites, cityofavalon dot com and visitcatalinaislcand dot com. There are lots of useful information such as harbor map, contact info as well as instructions of picking up the mooring ball. There is even a 24/7 livecam video. We reached Avalon around 4:30 in the winter afternoon just before sunset. I radio contacted the harbor patrol on channel 12 since we didn’t see any patrol boats at the entry. In the busy summer time, you may need to wait your turn. We provided the name of the boat, document number, boat length and how many nights we intended to stay. Harbor patrol assigned a mooring ball number, it’s on the 3rd row from the beach. We slowly motored by the green pier on the port side and made the turn into the 3rd row. The easiest way to find the row is to look for the number of the first mooring ball.
After we reached our assigned mooring ball, Katie picked up the pole and put it on deck. The yellow colored mooring line could be heavy, so I went on deck to pull it up and put on the port side bow cleat. Then I followed the spreader line to the stern and picked up the stern mooring line and put it on the port side stern cleat. It’s done.
To leave the mooring, it’s just undoing the whole process. Stern line first, then the bow line. Sometimes, it’s hard to get the stern line off the cleat. Our stern line got tangled with spreader line. Don’t be afraid to ask help from the harbor patrol. We recorded the live cam from visitcatalinaislcand dot com. I think it’s interesting to show you the whole process of us leaving the mooring.

What model is your sailboat? How did the mooring lines get so tangled that the Harbor Patrol had to pull so many times to get it loose?

It’s Beneteau Oceanis 38.1. The spreader line wrapped around the mooring line and made taut. Thanks.
