Hi Richard when Earthshock was made and broadcast for the first time, the Cybermen,s return in that awesome story was a great big surprise in billions, tens of billions and hundreds of billions of ways and there was no way the secret that they were coming back after a gap of 7 years having last appeared in Revenge of the Cybermen with the 4th Doctor not even the Dr Who comic which had become monthly and still is to this present day would on a preview for Earthshock advertise the return of the Cybermen. I was back then aged 13 and also it was the second colour Cyberstory and the second not to star Patrick Troughton as the Doctor given how much the Cybermen were the recurring villains in the 2nd Doctor era and were taking place of the Daleks at the time. This Cyberman story was also the first where neither of the 2 men Kit Pedlar and or Gerry Davis the two awesome men who devised the Cybermen as new returning villains to take the place the Daleks were leaving empty as their creator Terry Nation was removing them from Dr Who to put them into their own show in the U.S. which ultimately did not succeed . In the year Eartshock was shown there was no internet, no social media and also no twitter and also fans of Dr Who could not get to see this awesome Cyberstory been made the public gallery was closed to keep the surprise of the Cybermen,s return a guarded secret and when the first episode went out on tv I got goosebumps and I had only seen the Cybermen on tv once before in Revenge of the Cybermen 7 years earlier when I was 6 years old.

I do say Richard when Adric dies it is similar to the demies of Gan in classic Sci-fi series Blake,s Seven in the 2nd season episode Pressure Point both male characters regulars as they were are killed off and no fans of Blake,s Seven and or Doctor Who knew in advance these two main characters were to depart their respective sci-fi shows by been killed off . David Jackson Gan, in B7 was keen for Gan to die , as the part was very limited and could not really develop Matthew Waterhouse Adric wanted to leave Dr Who but he did not want Adric to die, and when JNT decided that 3 companions in the TARDIS was way too many he decided one must be written out of the series. He wanted it to be Nyssa at first but Peter Davison strongly objected, and instead JNT went with Adric who was not as popular amongst the companions and so Adric was written out in a way that was not the usual way for a companion to leave Dr Who. When Adric was blown up aboard the spaceship the unnamed freighter it was a big shock in billions of ways, but it menat Adric could never return to the show in the future his demise was the final end of Adric.

I always loved this episode, for the longest time I had only ever seen Part One while I was on a holiday so when I eventually got my hands on the DVD when that came out I was over the moon. Absolutely incredible stuff in my opinion. Great review!

@@richardlyth I do wonder Richard if giving the ship in this story, a name or even an indetification number would have been something the writers might have considered doing when the scripts were been written .

I wonder Richard were you like myself a huge fan of Blake,s Seven as well as classic Dr Who, the man Terry Nation who devised the Daleks as the Doctors arch-enemies devised 2 science fiction series first the Survivors and then later Blake,s Seven and there are people who say Blake,s Seven needs to be reinvented and rebooted for TV I do no know whether that would be such a good idea myself what if any opinion do you have on that please Richard.

I do have all of Blakes 7 on DVD. I've always thought it should be brought back, it's a great premise with lots of strong characters. Firefly and Farscape were clearly inspired by it, but it really needs a British cast and crew to make it as bleak and cynical as the original.

@@richardlyth Hi Richard I say with the demise of Adric, in Earthshock it was like the demise of Gan in series 2 episode Blake,s Seven episode Pressure Point and it was a big shock when both characters were in their respective sci-fi shows Gan in Blake,s Seven and Adric in Dr Who. I do say in B7 when episode 6 of series 1 of B7 was aired we were introduced to 2 arch-enemies Servalan and Travis and also the female arch-villain Servalan herself lasted for 29 out of 52 episodes of B7 whereas Travis only lasted for 13 episodes and was then killed off and exited the series with a bang. I liked in Earthshock the actors who played the main Cybermen the Leader David Banks and Marks Hardy the Lieutenant they IMO were a definite improvement on the actors portraying the main Cybermen in the previous serial Revenge of the Cybermen who were Christopher Robbie the Leader and Melville Jones the deputy as he was credited as .
