i am one of the weirdos that will just randomly open the tesla app and look at stuff like charging stats and safety score. I do this multiple times a day. so this will probably save me some energy
Rivian had phantom (vampire) drain and fixed one issue with the latest hardware. The vehicle was waking completely up just to charge the 12 volt battery from the main pack when needed. In the new 2025 R1 it now has another circuit to charge the 12 volt battery that doesn't require everything else be on.
I have a 4 year old EV without an app, parking cameras, or any remote access. It doesn't suffer ANY phantom drain, I have left it for 4-6 weeks at an airport and the onboard system used about 2-3% to maintain internal systems. It has a 44 kWh battery which suffices my needs. KISS rules!
I went on vacation for two weeks just before the July 4th holiday. Our Model 3 lost >30% of its charge. However, I have solar and Powerwalls, so I was checking on the solar production regularly during vacation and I think the old app was waking up the car every time causing more phantom drain. My 2012 RAV4 EV has terrible 12V dark load, so I knew it would kill the 12V during the vacation. I have a disconnect on the negative post so I just opened it before I left on vacation. I should have done the same to the Model 3. It was just parked in our attached garage, so it would have been easy to leave the frunk open and easy to reconnect.
I had my Model 3 parked in my garage for 9 days when I was on vacation, and it only lost one percentage point. I even installed an update the car had while I was away.
Thank you for mentioning others who use the Tesla app for the same car should update as well! My wife and 3 of my 4 sons all have the app for my M3 on their phones. I hadn’t really thought about their phones pinging the car as well as mine. (I haven’t noticed any huge drain, even parked in long term parking at the airport - but better to cover all the bases!)
Funny, If you close the Tesla app it immediately sends you a message to keep it open for the best user experience. Aka “wake up on approach or unlock when pulling the door handle. This new feature sounds more like no more automatic app refreshing.
closing the app stops the tesla app from talking to the car so when you walk up to the car it wont auto unlock. this new feature has nothing to do with that. in the old version of the app, the car would wake up anytime you open the app. now the car stays asleep until you actually use a feature on the app that requires the car to be awake. (setting climate, checking the cars location, sending directions, unlocking and locking)
There is a big difference between force closing an app and task switching away from it. I also have my Settings allowing the Tesla app to run in the background. It makes the Phone-as-a-Key work much better.
I have a 2022 model x plaid and a 2017 model x 100d and they both have close no fantom drain at all. I can park them for weeks at a time and loose close to no energy. Key is sentry mode and cabin over heat protection must be turned off and the hardest part is not to open the tesla app because open the app to cheek on the car will wake the car up.
All of my apps update automatically, if you don't let them when you go to use them they probably won't work. Updates nowadays seem to make the app unusable if you're not up to date
We have Tesla and MB EVs. Phantom drain on the Mercedes is minuscule, but Tesla is substantial. Hopefully, this app update fixes it. Beware of major battery drain from Sentry mode. Often my Sentry mode turns on without me activating it.
This nearly caught me off guard with a rental Tesla in FL which I wasn’t yet able to charge where I was staying. Fortunately my neighbor noticed that the cooling fan was running - hey, your car is still ON! Nearest SC was 25 miles away. Go looking for this “feature” if you rent a Tesla and plan to park it in the heat or hot sun.
@@dennislyon5412It’s true that overheat protection will consume energy, but if the car gets down to 20% SoC it will disable that feature (as well as climate keep and Sentry Mode) so that it doesn’t run the HV battery down so low that you find yourself stranded.
So Elon has talked about using the distributed compute power of the fleet to help with AI training. Isnt that going to use power to benefit Tesla while I pay for it?
I regular camp with my Tesla Model Y AWD, and my biggest problem is Tesla does not have a accessories option to enable my 12volt DC (actually 16volt DC) refrigerator being power on without either selecting Sentry mode or Camp Mode both I do not need as I have a RV I sleep in that I tow with the Tesla. Please Elon give us Accessories selection update on the next software update!
That’s a reasonable request that makes sense. However, you can always turn off Sentry mode and Climate when in Camp mode just keeps the car from shutting off.
I've leased about 26 cars over the years on short term leases. All ICE and some of them had phantom drains from new. The usually started but sometimes just couldn't be fixed.
Phantom power is the correct term, this power drains you battery. Phantom power is not an EV thing, your clock on your microwave, your TV listening to se if you press your remote controll, &c are all phantom power usage. When my EV when turned off, there is no traffic on the CAN bus, and thereby almost no power drain.
i plug every time i get home from work, drain not an issue, run sentry mode 24/7

Leaf? Air cooled
I’ll take the phantom drain for the perks.

I think the technical term is "parasitic draw"

No phantom draw issues I am aware of on the Mach E please let me know if I am missing something. Love the Podcast Francie.

The last thing you said is what the latest app update is supposed to address - now you can open the app without it waking the car up.

One often overlooked power use is cabin overheat protection

Its supposed to be optional, and supposedly they will pay you when its active. But I'm skeptical that it would be enough to be worth my while.

Phantom draine is big problem with connected vehicles
Is this for Android also?
I would assume so, but I don't see an update in Google play yet
