Tying The Two Feather Fly with Kelly Galloup

The Two Feather Fly was created by the great Catskill tyer Harry Darby, and is one of the simplest dry fly patterns to tie in terms of materials. This fly creates a perfect silhouette and will float extremely well with a little bit of dressing. In this video, Kelly shows you how to tie the original as well as his Found Link variation.

Harry Darby writes about the genesis of this fly in Catskill Flytier (pg. 55). He was trying to create a very light fly that would land more delicately on the water than the typical #10 dry that was popular at the time. He eventually settled on a #16 4XS, and did the wings both upright and spent. He says Al McClane wrote about the pattern in the October 1960 issue of Field & Stream, and it sold well because of that article. I've been tying a bunch of these this winter, and have been cutting some of the fibers from both sides of the extended body below the tail to make an even more slender profile, leaving only 1MM or so of fiber on each side of the shaft after the tie-in point. Definitely a fly that calls for steady hands and cheaters, but a simple beauty. Great video, as always. Thank you.
