- Groucho doesn't have a lot of memorable one liners in this show, but the second couple's segment is still very funny, thanks to the laconic manner of Hollywood stunt woman Patty Desaultels.

So classy how Groucho handles politics. Doesn't try to force them down anyone's throat, doesn't preach, and respects the views and privacy of others.

I grew up in TX and worked on friends' cattle ranches growing up.
I also worked in Hollywood for almost 20 years.
I really liked listening to Mr. Hiney, the cattle rancher.
Fortunately, there are still cattle ranchers in the Lone Star State that act and think the same way.
Nothing better than rural small town living.

Patty Desautels was amazing, and very good looking too! ;) Yes, and as the description says, very "laconic". From her reply to Groucho's question about her "further expectations in life", to her way of comparing life at home to life as a stuntwoman, she was just hilarious.

Amazing watching shows where some of the contestants born in the 1880s.
Laugh out lad not P.C, great classis TV, and I remember these shows as a kid, but understand the humor much better now!

Patty was a month shy of 64 when she died in 1992.

Lovely girl. She was 29 here and only live until 1992. Wonder if her stunts shortened her life?
James McArthur was able to get in a lot more publicity for American Express than he could have if Groucho had played it straight in his questioning. I have no doubt that Groucho knew the difference. But I wonder how much of the history of American Express James knew. When Groucho was younger and touring with his brothers in their early years, American Express had railway express and other package delivery services as part of their business mix. But during World War I, a government agency was established to regulate the railroads so troops and war related items could be shipped faster and more efficiently. This led to the government creating a monopoly to handle rail shipments. American Express, Wells Fargo and two other shipping businesses were required to divest most or all of their railway express businesses to this new company. It was originally called American Railway Express and eventually became known as Railway Express Agency.
When Groucho did plenty of train travel in those years before 1918, he probably would have been familiar seeing American Express signs as the railway shipping company, especially since their operations were based in NYC and had primary control of the shipping business out of NYC.
Of course I was disappointed that it was James McArthur, not James MacArthur. The actor, best known as Danno on Hawaii Five-O, was the adopted son of grand actress Helen Hayes (and her husband Charles MacArthur). Ms. Hayes was one of the best known residents of my county during much of her life. While I never met her, I visited her estate in Nyack NY on the west shore of the Hudson River a number of times from the mid-1960's to the late 1970's.
He has to act ignorant so that he can extract funny answers from the contestants.

Boy, Patty the stunt girl is a charmer. I'm dying to know what her 'conflict' is.
Did she say "conflict" or "complex"? I went back to listen again and I still couldn't tell for sure, but it sounded more like "complex" to me.
Whether this is what affected Patty, I can't say for sure. But I do know she was born and raised at a time that many girls were taught to not appear too intelligent, lest it ruin their marriage prospects.
The word she used was "complex." What a lovely person. I've update IMDB on some of her life on "Trivia."

Really, how bout you take a look at the red southern states, the majority of which are the least educated, biggest fed freebie sucking people in the country. Moscow Mitch has been in the Senate for 34 years and in that time he has raised KY all the way up to the 5th poorest state in the country.

Yes, when considering the moral and spiritual cesspools of the coast states (northern, primarily), we absolutely need that example, that the southern (northeastern l, continuing to Texas) states represent.

"Laconic" isn't really accurate, as she's very verbose. What she is is blunt, and speaks in obvious contradictions for effect. Awesome lady.
Just watched her roll off a cliff on "Tate". And yes, a very good looking lady (yummy, actually)! :-)
Pretty woman.. Very little sense of humor.
