  • True Skate released on Steam in early access just a week ago and already the devs have an update with some of the feedback the community gave them.

    I'm glad they're taking on feedback as fast as they are
    It still feels like you're playing the board rather than the skater, which would be fine if it was a skateboarding themed *physics simulation*, but this is supposed to be a simulation of the sport skateboarding. Part of that is control tweaks, but i really do feel like the player animations and camera animations are a big part of that. Similarly, the replay editor seems to follow the board and not the skater, which is part of why that feature isn't in an ideal state as well.
    The camera rotating with body spins, be it the original way or the birdseye view, is awkward at best and motion sickening at worst. It'd be nice if there was an option to decouple camera and skater rotation if there isn't one already.
    I do like the idea that they're not just using the Session/Skater XL control layout or the Skate control layout, but more wrench time on figuring out the best way to implement this new control scheme is needed. Stick click to set up and catch is a good idea, but i'm not sure if it's the best idea due to stick durability concerns.
    For controllers that have gyroscopes (PS4/PS5, Steam Controller, etc.), it'd be cool if you had the option to put turning on the gyro for finer control and to free up an input for something else.

    Agree that everything should be able to be done with the sticks, without ‘engaging’ the feet. I also prefer SXL controls, where they are always true to the skaters pov and don’t switch around, rather than being true to an outside 3rd person pov like what session is.
    Keen to see how they integrate the iPhone as the controller though, I have played true skate connected to an external screen using airplay so that I can have that 3rd person camera while flicking on my phone. It’s awesome, but I wonder if there’s a way they can implement the phone screen as a controller where you don’t have to always look down at it to make sure your fingers are in the right spot.
    What I’m thinking is using the whole screen as a swipe-able skateboard controller. I think that would be pretty sweet.

      I like the idea of leaving my PC and playing on the couch or out on the go at times with mobile standalone. Then porting/sharing the replay information/trick data to PC. And editing there in a more powerful 4K editor. Could be a lot like real Skate sessions. Gathering clips while you’re out in the world, then you get home and sit down at the computer to go through everything and edit something. (Granted the replay editor itself needs an overhaul).
      I have only ever use the connection to the television so people in the room can see what the user is playing… and pass the phone around to people. But I can’t imagine using a mobile or tablet device while looking up at a screen. I feel like I would go to the screen/PC for the 4K replay after I got the clip, personally. And there’s so much more control ability there with the touch input. Mashing sticks & buttons doesn’t FEEL like skating, and is never as satisfying/immersive for me as the direct to the board touch input.

    I'm looking forward that thing JL showcased in the previous video, about the board physics abilities.
    Getting physics abilities tied to a colour is just early game thing, but implementing full physics (that are usually in sliders) into the gear set-up is something that would sound interesting.
    Like : bigger wheels bigger speed, different behaviours with popsicles shape tail & nose compared to blunted ones or twin tails, truck high/low, tablets wheels or radials shape wheels, etc. Those would polish things like pitchness, scoop, etc.
    The actual abilities Pop, Drag up, Shuv, Flip, Speed, Slide, Dark, Grind, Steering, Grip, Stability doesn't seem too appealing as is. But having some kind of values displayed only once the skate gears (deck, trucks, wheels etc) are put together that would show abilities on 'Pop', 'Drag up', 'Shuv', 'Flip', 'Speed', 'Steering', 'Stability' (to use the existing ones). 'Grind' could be one of those too, if it was more explicit on what it's about (locking in ?). 'Slide', 'Dark', 'Grip' could be in something else, but doesn't quite get it. I mean 'Dark' is the ability to darkslide and 'Slide' to slide, but it's not really tied to a specific set-up but wax. And grip, I don't get what it could do.
    Anyway, it's those things I like in Session, could be great to have irl physic too in true skate.

    Let's hope these guys treat ya well at the rend game! Honestly bro what you do for the session community is unreal, I hope the true skate guys realise how important having a face of the community can be!

    I seriously wish they’d make the controls like skater XL where they’re not over complicated but not to simple. Like when you’re grinding push the stick inwards or outwards to rotate on the rail. Just like he said in the video, please make the sticks control things not the triggers. I also wish you could get off your board and run or pick a spot to put your session marker without having to ride all the way over to the spot. Just look at slater XL controls they’re the best imo.

      ​@@cecildenton6579 yeah... But this game there on Android and IOS for a long time and it game is glitchy and on mobile and on PC. But I can't say that this is bad game, I like this game, I like that it is physic based it gives a much ways for unique creative tricks. And I wish good luck for developers and believe that they will made a unique and great skate simulator.

    It would be nice that when the character rotates, the camera does not rotate and a little more detail in the animations, still know they are in early access so yeah. so far it looks better every time!

    go session controls 100% and touch up the replay editor and your golden. I'm not so concerned with the animations to start. That can come later. Fine tune the base mechanics before anything else.

    It could be way better to improving the skills of a great gameplay design and rotating at the correct angle of extending the right Backfoot from the stance!

    XL controls would be amazing and I know it can be turned off but the way the camera spins when you do 180s is very disorienting and should be removed all together. Better camera options in general, close mid far and custom options for that

    I'm glad left foot right foot is in the game. I'm left handed and this will make it way more playable for me when I get the game. I tried gamepad on mobile true skate and while I could get used to it, It just felt unnatural popping with my right thumb.

    i dont want the camera to forcefully turn when you do a 180 or 360 i want the skater to spin because that makes it look way better and play smoother in my opinion and controls like in session would be amazing and make the game stay realistic while not having just touchscreen controls ported onto controllers

      You can turn the camera spinning off already in the options.

    Right now the biggest thing preventing me from getting into this game is that it’s not polished enough to throw away all the experience I have from SXL and session. If you’re going to try to be the best skate sim, and I already have X00 hours in other skate sim games, what is going to make me want to play yours most? Why would I give up polishing skills in session to start over with junkier camera options, controls, etc? This is not to slight the game, it’s a cool game, but realistically is it better than session? To me, not yet. So am I going to play it? For me, not yet.

      Fair comment. The goal is the first completely physics-based skateboarding game. I think when it gets there it will have its place. As a basic example: Imagine a flat ground game of flat-ground Skate actually being interesting in a skateboarding game.
      Without mods. In most games, Session for example… if you put the top players against each other in a flat-ground game of skate… They will all have the basic flat ground tricks control inputs memorized.. you will often just end up with a stalemate. Everyone does all the tricks and you stand around wondering why it didn’t match irl? And even if you play with less experienced players, who are missing tricks and there is a winner… The tricks will look the same. Even a beginner can have a professional, proper looking 360 flip matching identically to an experts. But with a physics based game like true skate, you would see a game where every trick done looks completely different. Only the best skaters flip their board in a way that looks proper. Tricks can be done sloppy and will need to do over… You will most likely never see a stalemate ever. As a skateboarder, I’ve played countless games of skate… When you get to the skate park there is always one going on. Someone always wants to play. It’s a great way to warm up. It’s a huge subculture within a culture. And it’s the small things like that which I feel are missing from authenticity in skateboarding games. When the Animations catch up, and the replay editor/controls are dialed in to something more universal for people… There might just be a game here for you to play around with

      You should really watch the old games of skate in Session Kickstarter catch Build I had on the channel back when we had way more control over the flips.. man it was insane and you for sure weren’t going to get your tricks every try. Inexperienced had no chance back then haha. Waiting for the day when Session goes back to that cause they do have a physics based system BUT it’s heavily controlled right now

      I didn’t buy Session til later on in development so I never tried it early (didn’t have a PC).

      Yeah, the ones where the map didn’t have textures and it was just squares. That build was before Early access but the control you had with your board was much more than now and much more challenging

      It’s funny cause after recording this, I did a glitch and the skater was gone and couldn’t get it back unless I changed maps 🤣 so I mean it’s possible

      Yes, but session or skater XL doesn’t have the option to flip the controls so that the back foot is always the left stick and front foot is always the right stick.

      Same! I loved ADIO shoes, so comfy and durable. Really sucked when I had to change the company of shoe I wore cause I only skated ADIO for about 9 years. I think ES is the next best thing

    All these "new" features are features they've already had in the mobile game, so nothing is really new. Like the session Marker movement you noticed you can already do in mobile. The alternate spin cam is already in the mobile, that's how it looks when you press the spin cam so they just slapped it in the steam one, which I guess it's OK but not a new feature. I think it's funny how you always referred back to session or sxl to fix things in this game, because they do it so well there but this game...well doesn't. They need to fix animations so bad, the spin cam how it spins the entire screen is god awful like you said, and too many control inputs are the main things I see that need fixing, but this is coming from someone who hasn't played, only watched. But I don't think they should really touch the replay editor until they have the fundamentals down, like animations and gameplay. No one really wants to use the replay editor if the tricks/ character dont look good

    I understand that the game is in a super early stage. Imo they should've waited a lil longer to release this. it's looking like a steaming hot pile of 💩

    The fact they're charging $20 for this is disgusting. The game in its current state should have been a kick starter long term goal, not a steam early access game.
    I'm incredibly disappointed in you for acting like calling a spade a spade by saying this game looks awful isn't the kind of feedback you want to hear. This isn't a free open beta where they're trying to get the game to market this is a product they're trying to get people to buy and it's awful.
    I played skater XL and session on launch(of early access) and both of them were orders of magnitude further along than this dumpster fire.

      The reason why I say I don’t wanna see people saying “this game is trash” is because it doesn’t help what so ever. If a dev team wants to take a stab at making another skateboarding game, we should at least provide feedback so they know what we want.
      If you’re trying to make something and someone just calls it trash and doesn’t give more feedback on what can be improved, how the hell will you be able to make it better?
      If all people ever said about Session was “this game sucks!” “This game is garbage” and never gave constructive feedback… devs wouldn’t know what to change or fix and we wouldn’t have a decent game.

      They ported this over from mobile, so stuff from mobile don’t translate well to PC. They are working to improve stuff, that’s why they want our feedback
