    Amazing how this gadget has re-surfaced. Bought mine two years ago. It's a low-watt fan heater. That's it. Nothing more to say. Mine keeps my feet warm when sitting reading or watching TV. Ideal personal heater but not strong enough to keep a room warm.

  • @simonbeasley989

    I saw the adverts for the heater the energy companies don't want you to know about. Invented by "two ex engineers from a large technology company" or "a student from London University" or "Martin, an Oxford University student" who "took matters in to his own hands" when revising in the cold and "their request for a new heating system was ignored"! Inventor depends which day you watch the ad'! Ended up recently buying a £15 600w version from Lidl. It's great, but just need to understand what it is, it is a 600w heater that uses 600w of electricity and gives out 600w of heat! I have a small spare room I use as an office with a small radiator and putting this on for 20 minutes to supplement the radiator helps get the room to temperature. It would also be handy if the heating failed as a backup.

    I bought 3 of these last year. My sitting room is 20 sqm and I needed 2 of them sitting above the storage heater hight for it warm up the room (it was perishing cold lat winter) providing I kept the door shut. It was taking nearly 1 hour to warm up the room. I had only set the temp on 20 and it powered out automatically. Same in the bedroom (12 sqm) I did save on electricity (£300 per month - I do not have gas reduced to £125 for the same winter period)
    This year I have invested in german heater and two radiator rechargable radiators fan and it is much more better. Had to stick heat reflactor behind the heater to reflact heat back into the heater and the fans pushes it into the room. I don't need to worry about the temp. The heater comes with a stand alone thermostat, you only have to set the desired day and night temperature and the heater swithes off at that temperature. Vey satisfied with them little bit more expensive than cermic plug in heaters as it is size of a radiator but it dose the job and so far has not been too expensive to run

    Best low powered heater I ever used was an old Dimplex 500 watt Coldwatcher. Old style and now probably discontinued but ideal for keeping my caravan warm at night when I used it in midwinter, it had no fan as it was just a simple convection heater consisting of an element a little like one from an oven, enclosed in a perforated enamelled steel case and fitted with both a timer and a thermostat.

    Glad someone has tested one of these gadgets at last. Venders of these quoting efficiencies of 100% show that they are scammers and vulnerable customers should be protected from them. One quote I was given whilst studying thermodynamics whilst at college was “You can’t get for nought”, there’s no such thing as 100%, there are always losses.

      Most devices that run on electricity are way less than 100% efficient. TV's and Radios might be 60% efficient (just making figures up here) if so 60% of the electricity here goes to creating the sound or picture and the other 40% goes as heat so is wasted (at least in summer). Typically any inefficiency in an electrical device will be in the form of heat. With electric heaters the desired outcome is converting electricity to heat so if the fan in this heater is only 75% efficient nobody cares because most of that inefficiency creates heat. The only wasted energy in this sort of product is the noise it makes and that is the only thing that makes it less than 100% efficient.

      I've had a 3000w / 3kw blow electric heater or cold fan it heating element not used, the gas meter would go mental if it is on the 3 kw setting, on 2kw it's still in overdrive, but on 1 kw setting it doesn't warm the room. I now only use it as a fan to circulate warm air from another heating system. The most efficient system is a gas combination central heating as mine will heat my 2 bed detached bungalow ( well insulated ) within 20 minutes to 19 - 20 degrees, & keep it there for little effort & costs. That's why heat pumps are no good because they use way too much electric.

    • @tonybanton6787
      @tonybanton6787 Місяць тому

      Yes, but how quicky does the room cool whan switched off? The heat capacity of air is low. A blower heater directly heats the room's air and speads it through the room. The fabric of the room (walls/floor/furninture etc) then soaks up the heat and the room's air cools - more quickly than a convection system would as that process happens in tandem. The end result is zero-sum.

Gas boiler packed up so I unboxed heater and was pleasantly surprised but one big negative is safety of pets (cats) and small children compared to a conventional radiator.

      Of course its cheaper than central heating its 500 watts that is 0.5 kilowatt hours which would cost 12p to run it for 1 hour, most Central Heating Systems are 24kwh lets take gas as an example.
      To run a gas Central Heating System for 1 hour would cost £1.44. Gas is 6p per kwh so its 24×6 = £1.44.
      An electric central heating would be more expensive than gas.

    500W is 500W. The higher the wattage the higher the heating and the higher the heating bill. Also if it is running non stop, its going to use more electricity that an similar rated oil filled electric radiator which clicks on and off as the oil gets up to temperature. I prefer the free standing oil filled electrical radiators, The downside is they can take a while to heat the oil inside so they can take a while to take the chill off the room but a major plus is they are silent.
    Essentially the amount of heat any electrical heater gives out is totally dependent on how much energy it uses and a 500W heater isn't going to have much affect in an average sized room - in winter the only way it would be of any practical use is if you sit a few feet away from it and have it pointed directly towards you. I'm surprised it managed to heat the room up by 3C - to heat your room to 25C you'd probably have to run it continually from now to next August.

    I bought a 2000W fan heater for a caravan 20 years ago and barely used it. £15 at the time in 2004. Still own the heater in its box. Two weeks ago I had reason to try it in my bedroom. I only used the 1000W setting. Noisy but quite effective at making the room feel warm enough to climb into bed on a cold night. Didn’t leave in on overnight though. From another reviewer I learned apparently the ceramic element draws less power as it gets hotter, while a wire element like mine will draw the same power all the time it is on, or so I understand. So MAYBE any ‘new’ ceramic heater is more cost-efficient than a conventional resistance wire fan heater. However my fairly big 1000W/2000W fan heater did a good job of heating my 14ft x14ft room at a cost of possibly 35p/hour while running so not cheap to run. Do not like the idea of the heater straight into a wall socket. 99% of my wall sockets are behind furniture.

      My experience with a ceramic based heater is that it draws more power as it warms up. IE starts at a few hundred watts and ramps up. I think it reaches an equilibrium point that stops it getting any hotter.

      @haydnbetchley7460 Місяць тому

      If it is on it will still draw the same power. The ceramic just stores heat so if it ever gets up to temperature and the fan stlill blows then you will get some benefit from the stored heat. Not a lot though. It is the poor man's version of an oil-filled radiator.

    • @haydnbetchley7460
      @haydnbetchley7460 Місяць тому

      @@matthewwakeham2206It can't do.
      It is straight ohms law. The only thing that reduces the power is the thermostat which will probably never cut in due to it being underpowered.

    I put one in my shed that I use to paint in , I have a 6 foot oil heater in but it helps to get the temperature up quicker once the shed is warm I turn it off , my shed is 8 by 6 it’s does it job but it’s no good for a big room , I use it for a quick fix to get the temperatures up before my oil heater warms up the space , I never have it on longer than twenty minutes , it’s great for what I use it for but wouldn’t want to run it for hours , that’s why I have a oil heater tube it’s cheaper and doesn’t worry me about catching fire with the paint fumes,

    As others have said, you can't alter the natural laws. 100W of heat has the same warning effect on the room whatever generates it. And 1 kwhr of electricity costs the same whatever appliance is using it. Ceramic heaters have been around for many years, I've had mine for about 20. They're very efficient but no more so than any other electrical heater. Dont be scammed, if you just want a small efficient heater they're fine, their big advantage is that they're so small.

    It takes a lot of energy to overcome the winter temperature drop. Just put up with cold. Adopt a ketone based diet and wear good quality warm layered clothing. I’m 65 and I open the windows in the day and let the place blow through to keep it dry. Winter is your friend not your enemy. Embrace it. Make the change. My annual fuel charges are about £500 most of that is service charge. Given it’s easy when living alone but if you haven’t damaged your metabolism cold just becomes another temperature. Your body is cleverer than you think. Most healthy people won’t die so long as you wrap up, eat an array of good quality veg and fat and most of all lay off the carbs, it makes you feel cold. Use solar to charge devices and use solar lights around your home. Candles were used in the old days. Today it’s led lights and a solar panel. Safe and relatively cheap.

    Those small heaters are a cost saver if you use them correctly. I work from home and in the winter I just work from my small box room and have the heater on but don't heat the rest of the house until the evening. I can pop the fan heater on maybe three or four times for half an hour each for about 30p in total. That would be maybe £2 to have the full house heating on.

In a bedroom, more of a single bed size room, I've got a 500w Delonghi oil heater which I leave on all the time, though usually turned down to about 3and h alf,or 4, on the out of 5 thermostat, and it definitely takes the chill out of the room. I mean it's not super warm or anything, but it's far better than waking into an icy cold room in winter!

    These low wattage heaters do work, but they take absolutely ages to warm up a room, these are not supposed to be used to heat up a room like you normally use a heater. They supposed to be left on and keep the room warm. You can get really low wattage big panel heaters or a bar heater (for bathrooms) that supposed to just be left on all day and night. They will work like that, but won't work well if your room is cold and you want a warm room strait away.

    Gee whizz 🤦🏻‍♀️ I've been in the UK for the last 23 years and it's crazy how under prepared the homes here are for the freezing damp winters. I've never seen so much mould, it's practically in most homes. To think that people long ago actually lived like this without central heating. Things haven't changed much here. Unless you would like a large heating bill, you better budget well.
    I can't wait to get out of here to a sunnier place!! But I guess 3°C warmer is better than hypothermia. If you weren't wrapped up warm in that 10.5°C, and fell asleep in that, you'd get early onset hypothermia.

    10 square metres ~= 107.6 square feet (think 12 foot by 9 foot).
    --
    There are online calculators for heaters vs room dimensions insulation properties etc. In most cases the insulation levels and starting (ie outside) temperature are a major factor.
    I entered worst case dimensions (single room with all outside walls) and insulation properties (brick single wall, flat concrete roof) for a 10 sq metre by 2m high room. Then plugged in an outside temperature of 10°c.
    I've forgotten the exact values but a 500w heater topped out around 16°c while a 1kw heater went on to around 22/23°c. The greater the output the higher the potential equilibrium point between room temperature and heat loss through walls, windows etc.
    Now the heat loss from your dormer room is probably not as bad as the values I used (if nothing else the door does not look like one that leads directly outdoors). Nonetheless, by the looks of it the heater is simply underpowered for the conditions in your dormer room over the colder months.
    As for the heater, other rooms and/or other months.
    As for the room, better insulation and/or heater during the Winter months.

    Best to buy an oil free radiator, works better than oil filled. They are cheaper to run and retain heat well, even after they are switched off they give out heat for a while as they will stay hot. They are silent too. Other good options are ceramic core electric radiators and infar red radiators, but they all come with plus and minus, no electric heating is that cheap and will be more expensive than gas. Other heaters are halogen heaters too. Halogen heaters are probably better than a fan heater and are relatively cheap to buy and run but still more expensive than gas, but the future is electric and gas heating is on the way out!
