The fact that we beat this Tall Blacks in a game where they’re in their element, that says a lot about our team.. it’s no fluke, our boys are really good
I like the idea of expanding the pool. Not just to replace the aging veterans eventually, but to "fix" some lineup deficiencies which were apparent in this game despite the monumental win. Perimeter defense should be the utmost priority. Tamayo, Oftana, Quiambao and Amos, despite their obvious talent, are questionable wing defenders. Almost all of them are converted bigs, which means their lateral movements are still a work in progress. A healthy Jamie Malonzo could fix this somewhat, but who else? This is why I really think Mike Phillips should be added to the pool, and why I'm frustrated Francis Lopez hasn't really taken the next step towards being a fully fledged wing. Phillips, despite all his great attributes (motor, energy, rebounding, defense) will never be a knock down shooter, so he'll be there probably as a perimeter defensive specialist. Lopez potentially should have a better all around game, but I still don't see it when I watch him in the UAAP. His game is still predicated on his elite athleticism, putting his head down and going downhill for a drive, a dunk, or an acrobatic lay-up. He has shown flashes of good perimeter shooting and defensive prowess, but they come too few and far between. Hopefully he improves and takes that elusive "next step" soon because he is what this Gilas team needs, along with the aforementioned Motor Mike. Sana nga tuloy tuloy na to. Go Gilas!!!
I agree with most of your points. On Phillips, i agree he should be added to the pool but i don't think he'll be a perimeter defensive specialist. He's big enough to play power forward and center, and he can protect the rim. What's good about him is he can switch 1 thru 5 which is variable in the international game Agree also with Lopez. Magkasama tayo on waiting for that leap in his game haha - Gab
Lopez has the potential to be a difference maker, I'm also looking forward to his development. Phillips with his motor and positive vibe should be considered, he will add value in his natural position as power forward. As the game has already transitioned to switchable defenses, his mobility will be very useful in defending P&R's, while his physicality at the rim will always be a welcome addition. Looking forward, he should train with a shot doctor so that he can at the very least be a threat on catch-and-shoot jumpers.
We proved that win against latvia was no fluke, happy to see Kai have more confidence on the court and brownlee just doing brownlee things and Scottie driving to the basket at di takot kahit mga 6'10 or 7'0 kaharap niya 😂 Also sana si QMB mainclude in the future sa squad kainis din we have to wait pa para kay motor mike 🥲
Laban Gilas! What a game! Love the system coach Tim instilled in this team. Their playing with more pace and a lot of ball movement. Crazy enough is they outscored New Zealand in PTS in the Paint, which is quite surprising but wow. Love the episode guys! Cheers!
Not passing the torch, if junemar wasn’t on the first five, opposing team’s bigs would’ve dominated and kai can’t handle those physicality inside alone, it requires another tough/strong big in junemar to contain presence in the paint, remove junemar on that game or any other games against euro teams and it would’ve been disastrous, cone like’s tough big man like cstand with ginebra to establish space under the paint. After a few minutes and everyone gets exhausted, that’s when kai is expected to dominate on the post but have kai absorb the banging inside the paint the whole game, it wont work so junemar is still needed, no passing of torch needed
Cone has said that he would prefer to have a larger pool and longer preparation time, but that it's not feasible. He has also said that the team has players in mind to replace injured or underperforming players.
What a Win by Gilas Pilipinas and finally vs the Tall Blacks of New Zealand, not just a win but we beat them when NZ was shooting the lights out! Coach Tim stayed true to his word that we can beat NZ and he pulled it off! This Win showed that against any opponent, we will have a great chance of winning, as long as we have a great coach, great system, and everyone is contributing and following the system. Kai Sotto showed the game we all wanted.I hope they stay consistent and don't be complacent vs Hong Kong kahit sure win sa mga paningin natin. Just Play and win the right way, will going great in the future . We will never stop believing on Coach Tim and Gilas Pilipinas! Laban Pilipinas 🇵🇭🔥
BTW, the play that Josh drew, according to Tim Cone, was between Brownlee and Kai. Josh failed to recognize that NZ has been sagging on Newsome. Good recognition by Ramos, also Kai who provided a screen
Idiot. It was a play with brownlee and a downscreen from dwight ramos to open up newsome and kai. Yun ung sinabi nya. Yun din mismo ung maririnig mo dun sa play ni Josh, (new pop out here, take the shot if open)
Kudos to our Gilas. The system of Coach Tim Cone becomes more comfortable for the team and it really produces results. Sabi din ni Coach Tim sa post game interview na hindi pa ito ang best lineup ng Gilas dahil Wala pa daw si Jamie Malonzo na perfect daw sana bumantay kay Webster because of his agility and athleticism. And wala pa si EJ Edu na very athletic din, can score in the paint, can cover the rim and can compliment Kai Sotto. I'm very excited for this Gilas Lineup. Okay na okay na to, bawas na lang si Amos and Japhet pag healthy na si Malonzo at Edu.
Yes, been waiting for this ep! Gab, Gilas was indeed favored in this game. Alam ko sounds surprising 😂. But tho NZ has won the past 4 meetings, several vets/main gunners ang wala sa NZ team that Gilas faced yesterday (it was even Webster's debut as captain afaik). NZ also has a new head coach, as in kaka-appoint lang last month or sth. NZ also had flight issues (may halong malas din e). I thought disrespect kay Webster yung defensive coverage ng Gilas. Guards weren't fighting hard enough sa screens and the bigs kept dropping (bakit!!). I think Gilas should definitely improve on their defense sa guards like Webster and Huertas (weakness ba ng Gilas mga ganitong types of players?). Saka NZ also had JMF's number in this game, they really knew how to cover him (di magawa yung big-to-big actions we saw vs Latvia). And Kai and Harris were indeed teammates in Adelaide! I think medyo mababa yung 3pt shooting % ng Gilas last night (imo under 30% is low for int'l ball). I also found Dwight's perform a bit lacking last night. Low scoring %, even missed open shots. Ok lang na he wasn't scoring if he's given the PG load and/or the biggest defensive load. Kaso last night, Scottie was the main PG and Newsome carried the biggest load on defense. I guess I just expected more from him kasi in my mind, siya pinaka-vet sa Gilas (from Coach Chot's team pa siya). I hope Coach Tim would give significant minutes to young guys like KQ, Mason, and Tamayo in the next game vs HK. We need to get our younger players going. Gets ko naman why these players got only a few or no minutes vs NZ (Tamayo was given a chance, but he just did not deliver). And yeah, hope we could expand our national team pool so we have more guys who are familiar with the system na ready to play in case may injuries. Coach Tim is kinda dragging his feet sa pagkuha ng new members even just for the pool. About Brownlee's replacement, Bennie Boatwright is the slated candidate (he's in the process na). About QMB, na-excite rin ako when he said na he got a PH passport as a kid, pero I heard na may thing daw about how he did not continuously renew it and he actually had to apply for a new one when he was 20+ (baka need pa mag-submit ng docs/proof na his first PH passport was obtained before 16, parang case ni Malonzo). Lowkey umay na siguro si Japeth sa kakatawag sa kanya hahahaha, kahit nag-retire na sa Gilas. Salute to this guy! P.S. Love how FIBA games start on time + mabilis pa. Wala halos game stoppage. Baka naman UAAP can look into how FIBA games are conducted (it's not just the TV timeouts e). Last time, may FEU drummers, baka nga FEU drummers din yung last night.
Thanks for the info about the Tall Blacks. Yeah, maraming bago ata sa team nila. I agree with your first point also. We were giving Webster too many open looks. I kept shouting "stop going under screens" or "stop the drop coverage" haha - Gab
Also, yes. Ever since CTC took over, we haven't been a high 3pt percentage or 3pt rate team. We also don't have shooters. Si Mason siguro or KQ or Oftana but they get very limited playing time
Keeping the core lineup for this program is the biggest thing given they only have a few days to prepare. CTC is like the teacher who only gave a refresher course to his students and the guys played well. Its the WINNING EXPERIENCE era now for Philippine Basketball.
Solid game plan but yes, we need to address perimeter defense. JMF is a solid player in the post, and we need someone like him to compete with the world's bigs, but he has never been a quick player even in his younger days (I think he's actually lost weight and plays at a quicker pace nowadays), and he gets destroyed on P&Rs. Much respect to him, but his time in the program should transition to coaching. I don't know if the SBP and the collegiate leagues will come to an agreement, but maybe some players should be invited to practice with the program during the summer/offseason. Maybe circling the dates on the competition calendar and getting advance commitments would help. As for the Fil-foreigns in the NBA, it would be a marketing boon as well if we can get them to scrimmage with Gilas in the NBA offseason. We need to catch a break with FIBA, most of our transgressions like sending overaged players to youth tournaments or sending an all-naturalized squad are already 30+ years in the past. Even so, there is enough talent to work with in our 28-and-under players. We already have NCAA/UAAP players who will be great for the international game. I don't have access to CESAFI games but I'm sure there are potential recruits there as well. Regarding the drums, etc. for Gilas home games we should do what works for us. It's actually not unique to the Philippines. Watch enough Euro games either in football or basketball, what we're doing is actually tame. In a recent Red Star (Crvena Zvezda) vs. Partizan match-up (called "The Derby" by both fandoms) in the EuroLeague there was an entire section of male fans jumping up and down with their shirts off and screaming almost non-stop. Mabait pa nga tayo. As for Webster and his social media comments (if true), okay lang, loser! 🤣🤣🤣Just kidding, ganyan talaga minsan, bitter-bitteran kapag talo. There will be some matches where even foreign officials have been pressured (especially boxing, cough, cough), but hey, the NZ team is free to place the game under protest if they're serious.
No complains on the defense. That's how coach Tim defense works. Protect the paint and let the other team beat you with low percentage shots. I will never doubt coach Tim defensive schemes.
Just because that's how it works, doesn't mean that it will work every time He even went away from it in the 2nd half by putting 4 perimeter players around Kai Sotto
I understand your point but we're up against NZ, they scouted their best shooters and calculated the odds. They picked their poison and it works. Are we going to do that against like a Steph Curry kind of a shooter? Probably not, I am just saying I trust Coach Tim's defensive mind and decisions. But yes, it we're going to point some negatives on this game it's the 3 points of NZ. We need QMB and Edu in the future for better perimeter defense.
Before tau ang binubully sa shaded lane since we're lacking on height.though we have the speed now under CTC system we had a good mix of players and their chemistry was in full display, sa SBP please.maintauned this core of players and I'm sure papalag tau sa next FIBA World Cup in 2027,.sana hasain pa yung mga players also to be consistent on perimeter, bdw iba talaga ang system under CTC, from learning experience to winning experience at that partida sa.mga higher ranked team pa yan
We can JJ add Mandaquit 6'2, 190. 4 🌟 recruit and top 10 PG in the US. Played in the under 16 here in the US. If he dont play for under18, he will be eligible for Gilas. Passport holder.
This fellow signed with University of Washington. Currently ranked 47th in the incoming freshman class. I hope we can get him to train with the program during the offseason.
Great game Gilas! Disappointed with the "luto" kinda tweets from Corey Webster. Calls were balanced and didn't favored any teams. We won fair and square.
According to the article, he's willing to play if he gets a call up Of course, ang tanong ko: if he was issued a passport before he was 16, why have we only discovered it now? Haha. Anyway, past is past. Sana makalaro siya - Gab

The fact that we beat this Tall Blacks in a game where they’re in their element, that says a lot about our team.. it’s no fluke, our boys are really good
We've always been really good. We just needed to prepare better and have a system that adapted well to the international style
