  • We talk to Paul at O'Donovan Waste Disposal who shows why this lorry design is the safest in the UK.
This lorry is a 5* rating on the Direct Vision Standard which ranks vehicles based on how well the driver can see directly out of the cab, from 0* (bad) to 5* (best).
We are London Cycling Campaign. Our work led to Mayor Sadiq Khan introducing a lorry permit programme based on the Direct Vision Standard. Since 2021, all lorries on London’s roads have had to be at least 1* rated (or use mitigation measures such as sensors). By 2024, all lorries on London's roads must be at least 3* rated on the Direct Vision Standard.

Truck companies are doing their part, now cyclists need to smarten up their part. I worked on Crossrail in 2013 and each delivery truck was inspected to ensure it was fitted with the correct mirrors and signs of that time. Yet walking on the pavements around Liverpool St. Station, from job site to job site I was nearly knocked over every day by cyclists taking short cuts to avoid one-way streets, jams etc.
I'm sure it's even worse now with door dash delivery's, electric bikes with tourist who haven't a clue where they're going.
