Great video, Jason. Thanks much! And now my hunt continues. Sure helps to know what to look for on an old kid. I got a little G that's pretty sweet, had hopes for it, but it doesn't have the tell tail signs of an "old" Generation.
We have all the different keys of generation in our collection which my wife helped me make tunable. We also have a couple of Walton D's kicking around from when we thought our kids might learn how to play but didn't, and a nice Killarney D, and a Howard low whistle in D which I absolutely love those ones too. I will say the Waltons have quite a darker Mier tone whereas the Killarney, and of course the generations are much brighter. Funny thing is I actually need a tin whistle in the key of E for a track which I wrote but sadly do not have one I will have to acquire that lol
I've not seen any E whistles about, that sounds like fun. I know a lot of rock/metal/etc is in E which kinda makes sense as the lowest note on the guitar. I wonder why theres not more E whistles?
Great video! I'm just getting into whistles, and have a couple tweaked following your earlier video, they play really nice now. I'd love to get hold of an older D - if anyone's interested, I've seen there's a vintage C generation (with bite marks) for sale on ebay in the UK right now
I actually haven't! They don't often make their way over to this side of the Atlantic but I'd love to play one and compare. Maybe in the future! They sound great from what I've heard🤘
We all love a bit of mojo about an older instrument. Anyone got one of these kicking around in a drawer that sounds good? Or am I full of nonsense as usual?
I have a blue D which was passed along to me through a couple owners about 25 years ago, with the feeling of "this is a good one." I started playing music again kinda recently, and it's definitely the best of the few whistles I have. Turns out, it's got the old head as you describe.
You're like the James Hoffman of the Irish trad music world. Thanks for the consistently great videos.
Ha I had to look him up but cheers! Happy to be the 'anything' of Irish Traditional Music 😅
I have a Generations in B Flat. I use it to play highland pipe tunes with.
Great information. Thank you 🎶
Glad it was helpful!
I’ve been hunting for old generations for years. I have a handful, but none in D. The Bb one is by far my go to Bb whistle
I seem to have more in D than anything else

As long as it’s a nice whistle :)
Haha now I'm going to hunting these prize whistles online and in shops...
Found 2 on ebay first time!

Thanks for the heads up! I'm sure someone will grab that!
@@sionrouse I totally agree with your views on loving the chiffy, vintage recordings tone of the generations, there's nothing else quite like them
Hi Jason, I just wondering if you play the older top on a newer body, is there a noticeable difference in sound
I’ll give it a go! Thanks I hadn’t considered that
Have you ever played a Freeman “tweaked” generation? How does it compare to the vintage generation?

Exactly my experience! Finding a good whistle only to realise it was one of the old ones !
Our cats hate the tin whistle too!
He’ll leave the room for the pipes but nothing like my parents cat who would go crazy !
