Black always closed unless dumping. Grey, I flip flop. I picture the sink, if you wash dishes and don’t rinse out the sink afterwards and leave small food particles there, the next morning they are dried up and stuck. I feel like the tank is the same way. Usually I leave mine closed. Randomly I’ll open the gray. I don’t feel it needs to be full or close to it like the black tank, but I’m not sure I want it dry either. Now if the 4 of us are getting ready to get showers, sometimes I will pop it open just so I don’t have to worry about it.
The other issue is the smell. Leaving it open (unless your making a P trap with the hose) it can vent so pretty bad smells. I’ve had it happen where it smelled in the camper, and outside.
Regardless which I do, I always close the grey. I like it to be as full as possible when I go to fully dump. I feel like when those tanks are full and you open them it puts a pretty big rush of turbulent water in the tanks and I can’t help but think that gives them a good cleaning.
Very good analogy on the sink comparison. Looking at it that way makes complete sense.
Because I want the chemicals to work as advertised, I personally would leave the grey tank to fill up. Only when I change sites or put it in storage do I add the chemicals. I have a separate galley tank, I only drain it when full or I am leaving the site. I only put chemicals into the shower grey when I leave a site. BTW, you’re quickly becoming my favorite RV VLog. You have single-subject videos, which I much prefer.

I leave the gray open, but then close it right before we flush the black tank. I see what you mean about the chemicals, but I only put chems in the sink every few months. We do our best to take heavy grease out to the dumpster.

Close it! Open it as needed. Your gray tank drains into the same sewer system as your black tank. If you leave it open there is a chance of toxic sewer gases backing up into your rig.
Interesting thought. I have not had that happen to me yet but I see what you mean here. It is possible.
We are going on our 13th year full-time RVing. When fully hooked up I leave the grey tanks open. I close the grey occasionally to help clean them out. I don’t worry about this with dumping the black because both my rigs (class A & 5th wheel) have good tank flush systems. I run enough through this flush system to clean the tank and run clean water through the drain hose. I also use a low spot in my sewer hose, like a P-trap to stop any smells from coming up from the septic system.
I love the P stop idea.
I leave my gray tank open and my dark tank shut. In the past, when I leave the gray tank shut it backs up into my tub before I realize it’s full. When I empty my tank, I rinse the hose with a “Camco Rhino Blaster RV Tank Rinser with Backflow Preventer” or it gets rinsed while flushing the black tank through the exterior flush valve. Even then I use the camco rinser to cleanse the hose. The Camco rinser also helps with minor toilet paper clogs when emptying.the PTrap in the plumbing at each faucet holds water and keeps and fumes from entering the cabin.

Gooood information on the gray tank!!! Going to keep it closed more often now, thanks to Mark Tucker’s great input!!! Mark, love the analogy you pointed out on the sink!!! That perfectly pictures what is going on inside an always emty gray tank.

I have been living in an RV full time for 2 years, the RV belonged to someone else. Recently I purchased my own, classic RV. 1983 FLEETWOOD Wilderness Cimmaron Travel trailer. And.. the gate valve for the black tank is broken😱. I've always left grey valve open, but with this new dilemma I'm wondering if that's the best choice. I plan on replacing the entire waste valve SOON. Maybe a video about this particular problem? 👍 Thanks. Keep up the great content. You've definitely got it right.

I have received a camper and I'm actually living in it. Everything seems to be a learning process here. The manual you might as well just throw that one fireplace because it's worthless. When I hooked up the city water to the camper I turned on the pump thinking I needed the pump on to pump out the water into the sink only to find out now I was mistaken and I had to replace a part. I did go up on the roof and I had to replace two of the pipes for the sewer cuz they were all dry rotted cracked and a mess. Now I'm having a problem with the hot water heater I had a friend help me we got it going it lasted for a day and now I'm back to pilot light won't light again. So I guess I'm going to have to turn off the gas and maybe the electric I'm not sure if I need to turn that one off too and see if I can maybe take a few things out and maybe clean things up a little bit and check things out. Like I said the manual book is horrible it doesn't really specify anything on anything. That's like the emergency windows I have no idea how to open those and the book doesn't even mention them. Anyway like I said everything's a learning process.
Water heaters are simple but yet complicated all at the same time. It is really hard to diagnose and I usually recommend people to get a tech to look at it because (propane) is so dangerous if not handled correctly. As for the windows, They should be build to kick or break out in the even they are needed for an emergency. If you found a resolve for your water heater, please let me know.

Those sensors in the tank will eventually quit working anyways and it will all be done in vain. Go for it now. Its what i do.
I think that you are right. There are a lot of different opinions but I have not ran into any issues yet.
You can get sewer flies and critters leaving the valve open. Strongly suggest against it. Follow this method and your sensors will stay working 95% of the time. Longest I've had a sensor issue is one cycle with the materials he lists - on set for gray and one for black. Follow the instructions closely. Keeping a relatively full gray tank to flush the hose after dumping black also helps a lot. Take a few moments to dump everyday and worth it not to have bug issues.

Hi Jason, met you at that campground. Nice talking to you and your wife. That's my Super C and Gladiator in the background. I close my gray tank and dump it every couple or three days. Definitely try to make sure it's closed the day before dumping my black, so I can flush the black with it. But when I've forgotten, there's always the black flush hose for rinsing out the black sewer hose.

We leave the gray open but we have had some issues of sewer gas stinking up the trailer so I make p-trap in the hose to the sewer drop. Then, when we need to dump the black tank we trap some gray tank water to flush the hose when done with the black tank flush.

I’ve only had a few full hook up sites since we got our trailer. But from my experience and from what I’ve observed from other campers is.
Leave the grey open all the time.
Black closed and empty as needed or when 2/3 full.
With water hookups I’ve been shown by a couple seasonal campers and also by park staff. That what people do is buy a splitter tee and install that on the water hookup. These tees usually have valves on them.
When you need to flush your black tank you can hook up your flush hose after disconnecting your fresh water hose. Don’t really need to but I do.
Then turn flush on and flush your tank.
The black tank flush outlet on the trailer has a backflow preventer on it. So the chances of contaminating anything are almost 0.
Another way you can flush the tanks and clean the hoses without doing this is empty tanks and leave the sink on for 5-10 minutes and then open grey tank to flush out.
The site I was at this past weekend actually had 2 valves and connections at the site. 1 for fresh water and 1 for black flush / cleaning. So that was a bonus.
That is interesting on how the park handles its waste. For the gray water tank. Take a look at Mark Tuckers comment, I think that his analogy with the sink makes complete sense.
I leave my grey tank open until the night before then I close it and dump the black tank then the grey tank on departing day. I have had sewer gases come up during the hot season into the rig and don't ever want that to happen again.

I tend to keep my grey tank closed. Then each day after our showers and sink use I open and dump. Also on a side note if we are leaving the camper for any length of time I always turn off the water and relieve the pressure inside.

I've always left them closed, but with two teenagers and dogs we fill the grey tank too fast. We are going to leave it open

That is what I do as well. I have been getting feedback saying various different thoughts but this is what I do also.
The only time I leave the gray tank open is when we shower other wise the valve stay closed

I rarely stay anywhere with a sewer hookup. Since it’s my normal and I usually only have a weekend I usually just take my hoses out and dump before I leave just like a dump station with the exception that I usually flush my tank for a while first. I had bought the hose support when I first bought my camper but never used it a single time
@@HowToRV 0 We don't usually have sewer hookups, and once when we did my sewer hose got stretched out from leaving it... so even if we do, I mostly just hook it up as if we are at a dump station, with the exception of I flush the tank for about 30 minutes first. That being said, most of our trips are only weekend trips, so it's no big deal.

As for your grey tank I do the same with our class C we don’t boondock and have a tankless water heater. So if we are sitting for say 5 days I leave it open and generally on moving day my grey will be closed the day before and full, also my black will be bout half,, so it works out great. I dump my black and then refill my black from the black tank flush and dump then dump my grey. My coach is a 2021 gulfstream class c and have been doing it that way for a long time and my sensors work great. I also use the poo rod occasionally and rinse the side walls of the black. Just maintaining them as everything else. Keeps me occupied.

I keep the gray tank valve open. I usually hop between RV park when on trips enough to where the little bit of water left in the tank should slosh things around.

@How To RV Have only been into RVing for the past 1.5 years but, aside from the first, short test trip, it's always been left open. Probably a little over 100 RV days at this point.
